There is increasing evidence that greater physical diversity in a stream leads to a greater diversity of habitats, and hence species. Human impact has reduced the physical diversity within many stream systems. This paper reviews a range of techniques used to measure the physical diversity of a stream reach and specifically examines variability measures of a stream's thalweg, cross‐section and sediment size at the scale of millimetres to metres. Each measure was evaluated against synthetic data with different levels of diversity. From the original thirteen, eight measures were considered appropriate for application to data measured in the field. Creightons Creek (Victoria, Australia) was selected as a test site as it contains areas that are in their original geomorphic condition, as well as sections that have been disturbed by increased bed‐load in the form of a sediment slug. All eight measures showed that the area impacted by the sediment slug was less diverse in terms of its geomorphic variability than the unimpacted reaches. This suggests that massive increases in sediment load to streams will reduce the geomorphic complexity of a stream, and in turn, the diversity of habitat for biological communities. AbstractDue to increasingly frequent incidents of pluvial flooding of public spaces and private properties, climate-adaptive building and urban water management are gaining momentum in Dutch water governance. This study assesses the Dutch approach to urban water management by looking at the governance approaches of three of the largest Dutch municipalities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. By analyzing the municipalities’ governance approaches in a holistic way, paying attention to knowledge, organization and implementation, the research provides good practices in terms of different aspects of resilience as well as lessons regarding setting performance indicators in service levels, clarifying responsibility division, applying binding rules instead of soft policies, and more. 相似文献

Grid-connected vehicles (GCVs)—e.g., electric trains, metros, trams, and trolley buses—are propelled by electric motors directly connected to remote power sources. Their low at-vehicle energy consumption and ability to use a wide range of renewable energy sources make them strong contenders for urban and interurban transport systems in an era of energy constraints that favours use of renewable fuels, which may lie ahead. Needs for autonomous motorised mobility could be acceptably met in large measure by deployment of personal GCVs, also known as personal rapid transit (PRT). Alternatives, including fuel-cell vehicles and dual-drive vehicles fuelled with ethanol, will be less feasible. The ‘car of the future’ may not be an automobile so much as a PRT element of a comprehensive GCV-based system that offers at least as much utility and convenience as today's transport systems. 相似文献

The study investigated age-related differences in theory of mind and explored the relationship between this ability, other cognitive abilities, and structural brain measures. A cohort of 106 adults (ages 50–90 years) was recruited. Participants completed tests of theory of mind, verbal and performance intelligence, executive function, and information processing speed and underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging (measurement of whole brain volume, volume of white matter hyperintensities, and diffusion tensor imaging of white matter integrity). Theory of mind ability declined with increasing age, and the relationship between theory of mind and age was fully mediated by performance intelligence, executive function, and information processing speed and was partially mediated by verbal intelligence. Theory of mind performance correlated significantly with diffusion tensor imaging measures of white matter integrity but not with volume of white matter hyperintensities or whole-brain volume. Theory of mind age-related decline may not be independent of other cognitive functions; it may also be particularly susceptible to changes in white matter integrity. Semi-interpenetrating networks (sIPNs) designed to mimic extracellular matrix via covalent crosslinking of poly(ethylene glycol)
diacrylate in the presence of gelatin have been shown to aid in wound healing, particularly when loaded with soluble factors.
Ideal systems for tissue repair permit an effective release of therapeutic agents and flow of nutrients to proliferating cells.
Appropriate network characterization can, consequently, be used to convey an understanding of the mass transfer kinetics necessary
for materials to aid in the wound healing process. Solute transport from and through sIPNs has not yet been thoroughly evaluated.
In the current study, the diffusivity of growth factors and nutrients through the polymeric system was determined. Transport
of keratinocyte growth factor was modeled by treating the sIPN as a plane sheet into which the protein was loaded. The diffusion
coefficient was determined to be 4.86 × 10−9 ± 1.86 × 10−12 cm2/s. Glucose transport was modeled as flow through a semi-permeable membrane. Using lag-time analysis, the diffusion coefficient
was calculated to be 2.25 × 10−6 ± 1.98 × 10−7 cm2/s. The results were evaluated in conjunction with previous studies on controlled drug release from sIPNs. As expected from
Einstein-Stokes equation, diffusivity decreased as molecular size increased. The results offer insight into the structure-function

This study reports evidence that individuals with schizophrenia (SC) demonstrate intact attentional selection for visual working memory (WM) storage. A group of 62 participants with SC and 55 control participants without SC were studied in a series of 5 experiments that examined the ability to use top-down and bottom-up cues to guide WM encoding, as well as the ability to spontaneously select a subset of representations for storage. Participants with SC exhibited a consistent and robust ability to use selective attention in the control of WM in all 5 experiments, demonstrating a remarkable island of preserved functioning given the broad spectrum of impairments of attention and WM that have been widely reported in those with SC. These findings indicate that attention is not globally impaired in SC and make it possible to delineate more precisely the nature of the specific impairment of attention in this disorder. This longitudinal study compared Grade 8 solitary cigarette smokers (n = 541), drinkers (n = 577), and marijuana users (n = 148) with adolescents who restricted their use of these substances to social settings (ns = 562, 1,426, and 388, respectively) on adolescent functioning and young adult outcomes. In Grade 8, solitary users held more positive beliefs about the consequences of substance use, earned poorer grades, engaged in more deviant behavior, and devoted less time to school and more time to social activities. By age 23, these solitary users had lower educational attainment, poorer self-rated health, and greater substance use problems. A primary enzyme for the metabolism of cocaine is butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). To determine whether the systemic administration of BChE can increase the metabolism of cocaine sufficiently to alter a behavioral effect, rats were tested in a locomotor activity chamber after receiving 17 mg of cocaine per kg intraperitoneally. In rats pretreated intravenously with 5,000 IU of horse serum-derived BChE, the locomotor activity effect was significantly attenuated. BChE pretreatment increased plasma BChE levels approximately 400-fold. When added to rat plasma, this amount of BChE reduced the cocaine half-life from over 5 hr to less than 5 min. BChE altered the cocaine metabolic pattern such that the relatively nontoxic metabolite ecgonine methyl ester was produced, rather than benzoylecgonine. These results suggest that systemic administration of BChE can increase the metabolism of cocaine sufficiently to alter a behavioral effect of cocaine and thus should be investigated as a potential treatment for cocaine abuse.
