This paper presents the state of the art of flood risk management in Flanders, a low-lying region in the northern part of Belgium which is vulnerable to flooding. Possible flood hazard sources are not only the many rivers which pass through the Flemish inland, but also the North Sea, which is sensitive to the predicted sea level rise and which can affect large parts of the Flemish coastal area. Due to the expected increase in flood risks in the 21st century, the Flemish government has changed its flood management strategy from a flood control approach to a risk-based approach. Instead of focusing on protection against a certain water level, the objective now is to assure protection against the consequences of a flood, while considering its probability. In the first part, attention is given to the reasoning and functioning of the risk-based approach. Recent improvements to the approach are discussed, as well as the GIS-implementation of the entire model. The functioning of the approach is subsequently demonstrated in two case studies. The second part of the paper discusses future challenges for the flood risk management in Flanders. The driving force behind these challenges is the European Directive on the assessment and management of flood risks, which entered into force in 2007. The Flemish implementation of the directive is discussed and situated in the European landscape. Finally, attention is given to the communication of flood risks to the general public, since the “availability” of flood risk management plans is among the requirements of the EU Floods Directive.  相似文献

Microscale modeling of water transport in fruit tissue   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A model was developed to describe water transport in fruit tissue, taking into account the microstructural architecture of the cell assemblies in the tissue, which leads to a better understanding of the underlying phenomena causing water loss. Pear (Pyrus communis L. cv. Conference) was chosen as a model system. The fruit tissue architecture was generated by means of a cell growth model. The transport of water in the intercellular space, the cell wall network and cytoplasm was predicted using transport laws using the chemical potential as the driving force for water exchange between different microstructural compartments. The model equations were solved on the pear cortex tissue geometry (referred here after as geometry) using the finite element method. The different water transport properties of the microstructural components were obtained experimentally or from literature. The effective water conductivity of pear cortex tissue was calculated based on the microscale simulations. The values corresponded well with measured values of tissue water transport parameters. The model helped to explain the relative importance of the different microstructural features (intercellular space, cell wall, membrane and cytoplasm) for water transport. The cell membrane was shown to have the largest effect on the apparent macroscopic water conductivity.  相似文献

Applied 2 independent probabilities of electric shock presentation to 12 naive male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) as the independent variables defining schedules of aversive control: (a) the probability that a fixed signal period would end with a shock if a specified response were made and (b) the probability that the fixed signal period would end with shock if a specified response were not made. Systematic changes in the probability values generated several familiar schedules of aversive control, as well as several intermittent procedures. Response rate tended to rise during the signal period when the probability values were set so that not responding was more likely to produce a shock than responding; response rate tended to fall during the signal period when the probabilities were set so that responding was more likely to produce shock than not responding. Response patterning in time was also evident during the interval between signals when no consequences were programmed. These characteristics of response patterning reflected the changes in the 2 independent probability variables in ways that simple measures of response rate and shock rate alone did not. Motivated by practical applications in engineering, this article considers the problem of approximating a set of data with a function that is compatible with geometric programming (GP). Starting with well-established methods for fitting max-affine functions, it is shown that improved fits can be obtained using an extended function class based on the softmax of a set of affine functions. The softmax is generalized in two steps, with the most expressive function class using an implicit representation that allows fitting algorithms to locally tune softness. Each of the proposed function classes is directly compatible with the posynomial constraint forms in GP. Max-monomial fitting and posynomial fitting are shown to correspond to fitting special cases of the proposed implicit softmax function class. The fitting problem is formulated as a nonlinear least squares regression, solved locally using a Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm. Practical implementation considerations are discussed. The article concludes with numerical examples from aerospace engineering and electrical engineering.  相似文献

Object

Imaging of myocardial infarct composition is essential to assess efficacy of emerging therapeutics. T 2 * mapping has the potential to image myocardial hemorrhage and fibrosis by virtue of its short T 2 * . We aimed to quantify T 2 * in acute and chronic myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in mice.

Materials and methods

I/R-injury was induced in C57BL/6 mice (n?=?9). Sham-operated mice (n?=?8) served as controls. MRI was performed at baseline, and 1, 7 and 28?days after surgery. MRI at 9.4?T consisted of Cine, T 2 * mapping and late-gadolinium-enhancement (LGE). Mice (n?=?6) were histologically assessed for hemorrhage and collagen in the fibrotic scar.

Results

Baseline T 2 * values were 17.1?±?2.0?ms. At day 1, LGE displayed a homogeneous infarct enhancement. T 2 * in infarct (12.0?±?1.1?ms) and remote myocardium (13.9?±?0.8?ms) was lower than at baseline. On days 7 and 28, LGE was heterogeneous. T 2 * in the infarct decreased to 7.9?±?0.7 and 6.4?±?0.7?ms, whereas T 2 * values in the remote myocardium were 14.2?±?1.1 and 15.6?±?1.0?ms. Histology revealed deposition of iron and collagen in parallel with decreased T 2 * .

Conclusion

T 2 * values are dynamic during infarct development and decrease significantly during scar maturation. In the acute phase, T 2 * values in infarcted myocardium differ significantly from those in the chronic phase. T 2 * mapping was able to confirm the presence of a chronic infarction in cases where LGE was inconclusive. Hence, T 2 * may be used to discriminate between acute and chronic infarctions.  相似文献

Substrate activity screening (SAS) was presented a decade ago by Ellman and co‐workers as a straightforward methodology for the identification of fragment‐sized building blocks for enzyme inhibitors. Ever since, SAS and variations derived from it have been successfully applied to the discovery of inhibitors of various families of enzymatically active drug targets. This review covers key achievements and challenges of SAS and related methodologies, including the modified substrate activity screening (MSAS) approach. SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems are used for controlling and monitoring industrial processes. We propose a methodology to systematically identify potential process-related threats in SCADA. Process-related threats take place when an attacker gains user access rights and performs actions, which look legitimate, but which are intended to disrupt the SCADA process. To detect such threats, we propose a semi-automated approach of log processing. We conduct experiments on a real-life water treatment facility. A preliminary case study suggests that our approach is effective in detecting anomalous events that might alter the regular process workflow.  相似文献

This paper presents the implementation of a multiple analyte enzyme assay, based on the sequential injection of the different enzyme solutions, in an electrokinetic driven microfluidic chip. The assay methodology for the simultaneous quantification of d-glucose and d-fructose was reported in previous publications but here the real integration of both enzyme assays was achieved. When assays were executed separately, good reproducibility was observed with average CV values of 5.2% and 4.5% for the d-glucose and d-fructose assay, respectively. Next, the assays for the quantification of d-glucose and d-fructose were integrated simultaneously on chip, where each assay was executed consecutively in the same microreactor by applying a specific sequence of potentials at the reservoirs. This article proves the integration of a sequential based quantification approach in continuous microfluidic chips with electrokinetic actuation.  相似文献
