The nature and magnitude of mechanical reactions of polystyrene in capillary flow has been examined in a model extrusion process. Studies on polystyrene quantify the sensitive increase in shear degradation tendency with increasing polymer molecular weight. A molecular weight spectrum caused by the shear stress profile was measured across the extrudate radius by the new technique of solvent coring. It was further determined that an appreciable fraction of the mechanical reaction is shear induced in the capillary reservoir. This is confirmed by precision determinations of molecular weights and distributions by gel permeation chromatography on samples taken from concentric layers in the capillary reservoir after 50% sample extrusion. These results, involving traces of oxygen as a chemical probe, describe the stress profile in the reservoir and in the capillary during the pressure extrusion of high molecular weight polystyrene. Thus, changes in molecular weight and distribution may be attributable to changes in different portions of the shear geometry rather than the uniform changes generally considered. Clear evidence is also presented showing the dramatic effects of oxygen on these shear-induced changes in molecular weight and distribution.  相似文献

De novo synthesis and mitochondrial elongation of fatty acids have been demonstrated in subcellular fractions from hog and human aorta. Microsomal fatty acid elongation has been shown in hog aorta. The activity catalyzing the formation of fatty acids from acetyl and malonyl CoA was associated with a high molecular weight complex in the 6×106g×min supernatant fraction. The principal product was palmitic acid. Some myristic and stearic acids were also formed. One elongation system was associated with protein which sedimented between 4500 g×min and 150,000 g×min. It used acetyl CoA but not malonyl CoA, and NADH was the preferred reducing agent. Radioactivity from acetyl CoA was incorporated into many fatty acids. In hog aorta a second elongation system was found associated with protein which sedimented at 6×106 g×min. It used malonyl CoA preferentially as substrate and either NADH or NADPH as reducing agent.  相似文献

Fast reactors are once again being considered for nuclear power generation, in addition to transmutation of long-lived fission products resident in spent nuclear fuels. This re-consideration follows with intense developmental programs for both fuel and reactor design. One of the two leading candidates for next generation fast reactor fuel is metal alloys, resulting primarily from the successes achieved in the 1960s to early 1990s with both the experimental breeding reactor-II and the fast flux test facility. The goal of the current program is to develop and qualify a nuclear fuel system that performs all of the functions of a conventional, fast-spectrum nuclear fuel while destroying recycled actinides, thereby closing the nuclear fuel cycle. In order to meet this goal, the program must develop efficient and safe fuel fabrication processes designed for remote operation. This paper provides an overview of advanced casting processes investigated in the past, and the development of a gaseous diffusion calculation that demonstrates how straightforward process parameter modification can mitigate the loss of volatile minor actinides in the metal alloy melt.  相似文献

Large irradiation creep strains were observed in WSA-4 mixed-oxide fuel pins at 7% burn-up and 1023 n cm?2 (E>0.1 MeV) which were exposed to temperature variations relative to pins irradiated at approximately constant temperature. A comparison of the fuel pin and pressurized tube samples exposed to gradual temperature reductions shows similar behaviour. The results show that the irradiation creep coefficient increases with increasing temperature reduction and initial irradiation temperature. The increase in irradiation creep and the previously reported increase in swelling with temperature reduction appears similar to other macroscopic strain reports of irradiation creep and swelling association.  相似文献

There are many external influences that may control the path that nuclear power deployment follows. In the next 50 years several events may unfold. Fear of the consequences of the greenhouse effect may produce a carbon tax that would make nuclear power economically superior very quickly. This, in turn, would increase the rate at which uranium reserves diminish due to the increased rate of nuclear power deployment. However, breakthroughs in the extraction of uranium from the sea or deployment of fast breeder reactors would greatly extend the uranium reserves and, as well, utilize the thorium cycle.On the other hand, carbon sequestering technology breakthroughs could keep fossil fuels dominant for the remainder of the century. Nuclear power may only then continue, as today, in a lesser role or even diminish. Fusion power or new developments in solar power could completely displace nuclear power as we know it today.Even more difficult to predict is when the demand for mobile fuel for transportation will develop such that hydrogen and hydrogen rich fuel cells will be in common use. When this happens, nuclear power may be the energy source of choice to produce this fuel from water or methane. In a similar vein, the demand for potable and irrigation water may be another driver for the advent of increased deployment of nuclear power.With all these possibilities of events that could happen it appears impossible to predict with any certainty which path nuclear power deployment may take. However, it is necessary to define a strategy that is flexible enough to insure that when a technology is needed, it is ready to be deployed.For the next few decades there will be an evolutionary improvement in the performance of uranium oxide and mixed uranium oxide-plutonium oxide (MOX) LWR fuels. These improvements will be market driven to keep the cost of fuel and the resulting cost of nuclear power electricity as competitive as possible. The development of fuels for accelerator transmutation and for reactor transmutation with inert matrix fuels is in its infancy. A great deal of research has been initiated in a number of countries, which has been summarized in recent conferences. In Europe the work on these fuels is directed at the same problem as their utilization of MOX; namely to reduce the inventory of separated plutonium, minor actinides, and Long Lived Fission Products (LLFP). In the United States there is no reprocessing and thus no inventory of separated civilian plutonium. However, in the United States there is a resistance to a permanent spent fuel repository and thus accelerator transmutation presents a possible alternative. If nuclear power does have a long-term future, then the introduction of the fast reactor is inevitable. Included in the mission of the fast reactors would be the elimination of the inventory of separated plutonium while generating useful energy. The work that is ongoing now on the development of fuel concepts for assemblies that contain actinides and LLFP would be useful for fast reactor transmutation.There is still a great deal of work required to bring the fast breeder reactor option to maturity. Fortunately there is perhaps a fifty-year period to accomplish this work before fast breeders are necessary. With regard to fast reactor fuel development, future work should be considered in three stages. First, all the information obtained over the past forty years of fast reactor fuel development should be completely documented in a manner that future generations can readily retrieve and utilize the information. Fast reactor development came to such an abrupt halt world-wide that a great deal of information is in danger of being lost because most of the researchers and facilities are rapidly disappearing. Secondly, for all of the existing fast reactor fuels, and this includes, oxides, carbides, nitrides, and metallic fuels, the evolutionary work was far from being completed. Although mixed oxide fuels were probably the furthest advanced, there were many concepts for improved claddings and advanced fabrication methods that were never fully explored. Finally, with such an extended period before fast reactors are needed there is ample time for truly innovative fuels to be developed that are capable of performing over a wide range of conditions and coolants.  相似文献

To modulate the bioavailability and perhaps improve the tumor cell selectivity of O6-alkylguanine-DNA alkyltransferase (AGT) inactivators, pivaloyloxymethyl ester derivatives of O6-benzylguanine (BG) were synthesized and tested as AGT inactivators and as substrates for cellular esterases. The potential prodrugs examined were the 7- and 9-pivaloyloxymethyl derivatives of O6-benzylguanine (7- and 9-esterBG), and of 8-aza-O6-benzylguanine (8-aza-7-esterBG and 8-aza-9-esterBG) and the 9-pivaloyloxymethyl derivative of 8-bromo-O6-benzylguanine (8-bromo-9-esterBG). The benzylated purines were all potent inactivators of the pure AGT and of the AGT activity in HT29 cells and cell extracts. Each ester was at least 75 times less potent than the corresponding benzylated purine against the pure human AGT. In contrast, the activities of esters and their respective benzylated purine were similar in crude cell extracts and in intact cells. The increase in potency of esters in cellular extracts could be explained by a conversion of the respective prodrug to the more potent benzylated purine in the presence of cellular esterases. The apparent catalytic activity (Vmax/Km) of liver microsomal esterase for 8-azaBG ester prodrugs was 70-130 times greater than for BG prodrugs and 10-20 times greater than for 8-bromo-9-esterBG. Tumor cell hydrolysis of the esters varied considerably as a function of cell type and prodrug structure. These data suggest that these or related prodrugs may be advantageous for selective AGT inactivation in certain tumor types.  相似文献

Legal decision-makers frequently assess the credibility of reports of traumatic victimization. In this study, we compared the memory features and post-traumatic symptoms associated with truthful and malingered reports of trauma. Participants (N=126) described in writing both a genuine and a fabricated traumatic experience (counterbalanced) and completed scales relating to the severity of the associated trauma symptoms. Relative to accounts of genuine trauma, the information in fabricated accounts was less plausible and contained fewer contextual details. However, truthful and false reports were qualitatively similar on other criteria such as coherence and relevance. Fabricated traumatic experiences were associated with extreme ratings on multiple, diverse psychological measures of emotional distress and a higher level of apparent post-traumatic stress disorder. However, most participants were able to "fool" widely used validity scales. Implications for evaluating the credibility of claims of victimization in legal cases are discussed. It is unclear whether the neural algorithm that underlies stereoscopic vision in birds incorporates both low level (camouflage breaking) and high level (depth ordering) comparisons of information available to each of the eyes. Both visual functions were successfully tested by examining transitive inference performance in two barn owls trained to discriminate static Julesz random dot stereograms, thus demonstrating a capacity to detect relative depth using fine retinal disparity as the sole cue for discrimination. Our behavioral tests provide strong evidence that the barn owl possesses global stereopsis comparable to that found in the macaque monkey--the owl's best stereoacuity was 2 min of arc.  相似文献
