Salmonella and Campylobacter continue to be major foodborne pathogens and raw poultry is considered to be an important source of these bacteria. In this study, the prevalence and numbers of Salmonella and Campylobacter spp. in relation to isolation/sampling methods were determined in 241 whole raw chickens purchased from retail outlets in England during the winters of 1998/1999 (101 chickens) and 1999/2000 (140 chickens). The packaging of the 140 chickens was also examined for the presence of the above pathogens. The prevalence and numbers of enterococci were examined in 21 of the 101 chickens. In total, Salmonella and Campylobacter spp. were present in 25% and 83% of the chickens, respectively. Salmonella were isolated from a sample representing both the inside and outside of the packaging in 19% of the chickens, while the corresponding figure for Campylobacter spp. was 56%. Both of these pathogens were isolated from the outside of the packaging in 6% of the chickens. Salmonella was more frequently isolated from samples containing chicken skin in comparison with those containing carcass-rinse fluid only. Two chickens (0.8%) were positive for Salmonella by direct enumeration methods with contamination levels of log10 3.8 and 4.5 colony forming units (cfu) per carcass, respectively. The most prevalent serotypes were S. Hadar, S. Enteritidis and S. Indiana and two different serotypes were identified in 5/20 salmonella-positive chickens. Resistance to at least one antibiotic was found in 70% of the strains, 46% were multiresistant (resistant to > or = four drugs) and 52% showed a lowered susceptibility to ciprofloxacin. The likelihood of isolating Campylobacter spp. from neck-skin, carcass-rinse or carcass-rinse plus whole skin samples was similar, Campylobacter spp. were found in higher levels in carcass-rinse or carcass-rinse plus whole skin samples than in neck-skin. The log10 cfu of Campylobacter spp. were 2.70-4.99 in 18% of the chickens and 5.00-6.99 in 20%. Campylobacter isolates (425) comprised Campylobacter jejuni (98%) and C. coli (2%) and 98 different sero/phagetypes of these two species were identified. Resistance to at least one antibiotic was found in 73% of the strains and 13% were multiresistant. Thirteen percent of the strains showed lowered susceptibility to ciprofloxacin, while 4.9% were resistant to erythromycin. Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), able to grow on agar containing 15 mg l(-1) vancomycin (VRE15), were present in 19 chickens. The log10 cfu of VRE15 was 2.90-3.99 in 10 chickens and between 4.00 and 4.99 in two chickens. Since the early 1990s there has been a dramatic increase in resistance to antimicrobial drugs in Salmonella enterica and Campylobacter spp., and to a lesser extent in Vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 from cases of human infection in developed countries. For S. Typhimurium a particularly important aspect of this increase has been the widespread dissemination of a multiply drug-resistant (MR) strain of definitive phage type (DT) 104 in food animals since the early 1990s. The use of antimicrobials for prophylaxis in food producing animals has been an important factor in the emergence of strains with resistance to certain antimicrobials. It is hoped that recently introduced Codes of Practice for the prophylactic use of antimicrobials in food animals will result in a decline in the occurrence of drug resistant strains in the food chain. 相似文献
The thermal expansion behaviour of oriented polyethylene has been studied over the temperature range ?50°C to +20°C. In general the values for the thermal expansion coefficient in the orientation direction are negative and of a greater magnitude than the c-axis expansion for the crystal, which is approached at ?50°C. This remarkable effect has been quantitatively related to the influence of an internal shrinkage force, and the changes in expansivity with temperature shown to relate primarily to the change in modulus with temperature. 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy of patient recall of a question about smoking in a specified consultation in general practice; the accuracy of smokers' recall of advice to stop smoking; and predictors of accurate recall. DESIGN: Analysis of 1075 audiotapes was compared blind with matching patient questionnaires administered after the consultation to calculate sensitivity and specificity for patient recall as a dichotomous variable. Predictors of recall were determined by logistic regression. SETTING: General practitioner training practices, New South Wales, Australia. SUBJECTS: Thirty-four trainees and consecutive samples of their patients 16-65 years of age. RESULTS: Patient recall of a question about smoking had a high false positive rate of 21% but a sensitivity of 93%. Smokers over-reported advice to stop smoking (specificity 82%; sensitivity 92%). Predictors of accuracy of a question about smoking included patient sex (women 1.58 times more likely than men to be accurate); smoking status (smokers 1.7 times as likely as non-smokers to be accurate); and interval since consultation (those who completed their questionnaires within a week were 1.84 times more likely to be accurate). CONCLUSIONS: Patient recall is systematically biased towards over-reporting of a question about smoking status and, among smokers, of advice to quit. Although we recommend its continued application in health services evaluation, findings should be interpreted with caution, particularly if subjects are male or the interval between recall of smoking cessation advice and the occasion of service in which it might have occurred is considerably delayed.
Mung bean starch was subjected to a range of heat-moisture treatments (HMT) based on different moisture contents (15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, and 35%) all heated at 120 °C for 12 h. The impact on the yields of resistant starch (RS), and the microstructure, physicochemical and functional properties of RS was investigated. Compared to raw starch, the RS content of HMT starch increased significantly, with the starch treated at 20% moisture having the highest RS content. After HMT, birefringence remained at the periphery of the granules and was absent at the center of some granules. The shape and integrity of HMT starch granules did not change but concavity was observed under scanning electronic microscopy. Apparent amylose contents of HMT starch increased and the HMT starch was dominated by high molecular weight fraction. Both the native and HMT starches showed A-type X-ray diffraction pattern. Relative crystallinity increased after HMT. The gelatinization temperatures (To, Tp, and Tc), gelatinization temperature range (Tc–To) and enthalpies of gelatinization (ΔH) increased significantly in HMT starch compared to native starch. The solubility increased but swelling power decreased in HMT starches. This study clearly shows that the HMT exhibited thermal stability and resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis owing to stronger interactions of starch chains in granule. 相似文献
Objective: To conduct a comprehensive review regarding global waterpipe use, in order to identify current knowledge, guide scientific research, and promote public policy.
Data sources: A Medline search using as keywords "waterpipe", "narghile", "arghile", "shisha", "hookah", "goza", "hubble bubble" and variant spellings (for example, "hooka"; "hukka") was conducted. Resources compiled recently by members of GLOBALink were used.
Study selection: Every identified published study related to waterpipe use was included.
Data synthesis: Research regarding waterpipe epidemiology and health effects is limited; no published studies address treatment efforts. Waterpipe use is increasing globally, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, where perceptions regarding health effects and traditional values may facilitate use among women and children. Waterpipe smoke contains harmful constituents and there is preliminary evidence linking waterpipe smoking to a variety of life threatening conditions, including pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease, and pregnancy related complications.
Conclusions: More scientific documentation and careful analysis is required before the spread of waterpipe use and its health effects can be understood, and empirically guided treatment and public policy strategies can be implemented.
The aim of this work was to establish the important parameters that control the hot compaction behaviour of woven oriented polypropylene. Five commercial woven cloths, based on four different polypropylene polymers, were selected so that the perceived important variables could be studied. These include the mechanical properties of the original oriented tapes or fibres, the geometry of the oriented reinforcement (fibres or tapes), the mechanical properties of the base polymer (which are crucially dependant on the molecular weight and morphology), and the weave style. The five cloths were chosen so as to explore the boundaries of these various parameters, i.e. low and high molecular weight: circular or rectangular reinforcement (fibres or tapes): low or high tape initial orientation: coarse or fine weave.A vital aspect of this study was the realisation that hot compacted polypropylene could be envisaged as a composite, comprising an oriented ‘reinforcement’ bound together by a matrix phase, formed by melting and recrystallisation of the original oriented material. We have established the crucial importance of the properties of the melted and recrystallised matrix phase, especially the level of ductility, in controlling the properties of the hot compacted composite. 相似文献
