Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and by adsorption of N2 and acetylene. The dynamics of acetylene sorption was studied by frequency response spectroscopy. The average tube dimension and the shell number were determined from a statistical evaluation of the TEM images. This value agreed with that obtained from XRD via the Scherrer equation only if a shape factor of 0.49 was used. The diffusion of acetylene in the nanotubes of the MWCNT sample was found to be the rate-controlling step of the sorption process. Relationships between the tube dimensions and the equilibrium and dynamic sorption properties were demonstrated. 相似文献

Microdroplet formation is an emerging area of research due to its wide-ranging applications within microfluidic based lab-on-a-chip devices. Our goal is to understand the dynamics of droplet formation in a microfluidic T-junction in order to optimize the operation of the microfluidic device. Understanding of this process forms the basis of many potential applications: synthesis of new materials, formulation of products in pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industries. The two-phase level set method, which is ideally suited for tracking the interfaces between two immiscible fluids, has been used to perform numerical simulations of droplet formation in a T-junction. Numerical predictions compare well with experimental observations. The influence of parameters such as flow rate ratio, capillary number, viscosity ratio and the interfacial tension between the two immiscible fluids is known to affect the physical processes of droplet generation. In this study the effects of surface wettability, which can be controlled by altering the contact angle, are investigated systematically. As competitive wetting between liquids in a two-phase flow can give rise to erratic flow patterns, it is often desirable to minimize this phenomenon as it can lead to a disruption of the regular production of uniform droplets. The numerical simulations predicted that wettability effects on droplet length are more prominent when the viscosity ratio λ (the quotient of the viscosity of the dispersed phase with the viscosity of the continuous phase) is O(1), compared to the situation when λ is O(0.1). The droplet size becomes independent of contact angle in the superhydrophobic regime for all capillary numbers. At a given value of interfacial tension, the droplet length is greater when λ is O(1) compared to the case when λ is O(0.1). The increase in droplet length with interfacial tension, σ, is a function of with the coefficients of the regression curves depending on the viscosity ratio. 相似文献

Understanding longitudinal trends in the processing of carbon in rivers represents a much conceptualised, but infrequently tested, issue in aquatic ecology. In this study, we conducted concurrent longitudinal examinations of three very different rivers in eastern Australia to determine whether general principles in river functioning exist across broad geographic and hydrologic scales. Specifically, we examined trends in ambient basic water chemistry, nutrient concentrations, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), extracellular enzymes and food web structure and functioning and conducted bioassays to examine the degree to which DOC and nutrients limit heterotrophic bacterial respiration. These parameters revealed striking similarities across all sites. For metazoan communities, stable isotope analysis showed that algal carbon was the dominant basal resource utilised by consumers in all three rivers, suggesting that in‐stream primary producers strongly underpin trophic pathways regardless of the position within a catchment or catchment condition. Analyses of extracellular enzymes revealed that microbial communities are actively utilising DOC at all sites. In fact, heterotrophic microbial respiration was strongly limited by DOC at all sites, with nutrient additions resulting in only relatively minor increases in respiration. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that DOC and algal carbon are critically important drivers of ecosystem processes in Australian riverine ecosystems. Furthermore, across all of our sites and rivers, ambient nutrient concentrations did not influence carbon processing. The consistent longitudinal trends in river function identified in this study provide useful insights for catchment managers and modellers with respect to identifiying key principles that underpin ecosystem functioning in Australian rivers. An important requirement for commercialization of willow biomass production in short-rotation crop (SRC) plantations is the reliable and cost-efficient estimation of biomass yield. Predictions and simulations of willow stand biomass have been problematic due to issues with modeling the multi-stem growth form of willow. The aim of this paper was to develop a new approach for managing allometric measurements from multi-stemmed willow for stand growth simulations. The 3PG model (Physiological Principles in Predicting Growth) was parameterized for willow and was used for biomass yield simulation for an entire 22-yr cycle (seven 3-yr rotations) of willow in SRC plantations. The multi-stemmed growth form was transformed into a single-stem modeling form by deriving whole plant willow allometric relationships using detailed stem-level measurements of basal area, stem biomass and volume. 3PG model predictions for plant diameter, height, biomass, and stand biomass and volume were within the 95% confidence range of mean plot values. Model simulations showed that after seven 3-yr rotations only 20% of planted cuttings would survive (a decrease from 15,152 to 3022 plants ha−1), but stand volume would increase continuously with each subsequent rotation. 3PG predictions for cumulative (for 22 yr) aboveground biomass was 272 Mg ha−1 and mean annual yield was 12 Mg ha−1 yr−1, comparing favorably with other findings. To our knowledge, this work is the first where the 3PG model was calibrated and used for willow species. Once parameterized for a specific willow clone, 3PG can predict biomass accumulation for any agricultural land in North America using only available soil and climate data. 相似文献

We present an analytical and numerical stability analysis of the onset of natural convection in a horizontal fluid-saturated porous cavity. The cavity is bounded by thin horizontal plates with uniform thickness whose outer surfaces are subject to a constant heat flux. The main aim is to determine the effect of the presence of the bounding plates on the onset of convection. The authors discusses the effects of switching low inductive currents with 138 kV SF6 breakers in a petrochemical plant. Switching transients are believed to have contributed to the failure of a 13.8 kV PT and a 13.8 kV air magnetic circuit breaker. The high-frequency transient surge can transfer across a transformer due to transformer capacitances between the high- and low-voltage windings. The electromagnetic transient program system (ETPS) model and different case studies are discussed with the effect of different transformer winding capacitances. The interruption mechanism of low inductive currents is also described.
