Sex hormones of mammals control the expression of sexual characteristics and bodily functions. The male hormone testosterone and the female hormones progesterone and estradiol are known to occur in urine markings of mice. Here, we show that all three hormones are also present in urine of brown rats, and that they are effective sexual communication signals (pheromones) that elicit attraction behavior of prospective mates in both brown rats and house mice. When added as lures to trap boxes in field experiments, synthetic testosterone, for example, increased captures of adult female mice 15‐fold, and a blend of progesterone and estradiol increased captures of male mice eightfold and male rats 13‐fold. Remarkably, these hormones increased captures even though the food‐ and pheromone‐based baits to which they were added had previously been shown to be superior to current commercial rodent attractants. We predict that these sex hormones will function as sex attractant pheromones in diverse taxa.  相似文献

Granules of ceramic materials are differently stressed by the processes during pelletizing in high shear mixers. This has a major influence on the resulting agglomerate size distribution. The paper presents the results of different mixing tools and impeller speed on the agglomerate strength. Therefor agglomerates have been compounded under certain conditions. Lactoferrin (Lf), the main iron-binding protein of milk, has biological activities. We have evaluated the potential of camel milk lactoferrin for its ability to inhibit the proliferation of the colon cancer cell line, HCT-116, in vitro, DNA damage and its antioxidant activities for the first time. The antioxidant capacity of Lf was evaluated by different assays, including ferric-reducing/antioxidant power assay (FRAP), free radical-scavenging activity (DPPH), nitric oxide (NO) radical-scavenging assay, total antioxidant activity and DNA damage, compared with vitamin C and rutin.  相似文献

In many industrial applications, the knowledge of the occurring transport processes in liquid/liquid systems is of great interest to design a multiphase reactor or an extraction column, for instance. All transport processes in liquid/liquid systems are governed by the interface. In some processes surfactants are needed. Surfactants change many interfacial properties which affect the transport processes. In this work, the influence of high surfactant concentrations (micellar systems) on transport processes is regarded. To understand, the occurring reduction of the drop rise velocity and of mass transfer rates experimental investigations of the occurring interfacial phenomena are carried out. Therefore, interfacial tension measurements as well as colloidal probe atomic force measurements of liquid/liquid systems were conducted. Innovative mixing principles in bioreactors, for example using the rocking of a platform to induce a backwards and forwards 'wave', or using orbital shaking to generate a 'wave' that runs round in a cylindrical container, have proved to be successful for the suspension cultures of cells, especially when combined with disposable materials. Solution styrene butadiene rubber (S-SBR) composites reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs), expanded graphite (EG), and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared and the electrical and various mechanical properties were compared to understand the specific dispersion and reinforcement behaviours of these nanostructured fillers. The electrical resistivity of the rubber composite gradually decreased with the increase of filler amount in the composite. The electrical percolation behaviour was found to be started at 15 phr (parts per hundred rubber) for GnP and 20 phr for EG filled systems, whereas a sharp drop was found at 5 phr for MWCNT based composites. At a particular filler loading, dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile test showed a significant improvement of the mechanical properties of the composites comprised of MWCNT followed by GnP and then EG. The high aspect ratio of MWCNT enabled to form a network at low filler loading and, consequently, a good reinforcement effect was observed. To investigate the effect of hybrid fillers, MWCNT (up to 5 phr) were added in a selected composition of EG based compounds. The formation of a mixed filler network showed a synergistic effect on the improvement of electrical as well as various mechanical properties.  相似文献

Although magnesium as degradable biomaterial already showed clinical proof of concepts, the design of new alloys requires predictive in vitro methods, which are still lacking. Incubation under cell culture conditions to obtain “physiological” corrosion may be a solution. The aim of this study was to analyse the influence of different solutions, addition of proteins and of oxygen availability on the corrosion of different magnesium materials (pure Mg, WE43, and E11) with different surface finishing. Oxygen content in solution, pH, osmolality and ion release were determined. Corrosion led to a reduction of oxygen in solution. The influence of oxygen on pH was enhanced by proteins, while osmolality was not influenced. Magnesium ion release was solution-dependent and enhanced in the initial phase by proteins with delayed release of alloying elements. The main corrosion product formed was magnesium carbonate. Therefore, cell culture conditions are proposed as first step toward physiological corrosion.  相似文献
