The prophylactic use of oral antimicrobials, such as neomycin, in milk replacer (MR) or whole milk is a common practice in calf-rearing that is thought to aid in preventing disease. Heavy reliance on antimicrobials is of concern not only because of the development of antimicrobial resistance, but also because of the potentially negative effects on health. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of neomycin on calf health and growth performance. One hundred and sixty calves (approximately 3–10 d of age), distributed across 2 experimental periods, were stratified by body weight (BW) and serum total protein, and assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: control (CON; nonmedicated MR, n = 60), short-term antibiotic (ST; neomycin mixed in MR from d 1–14, n = 50), or long-term antibiotic (LT; neomycin in ?MR from d 1–28, n = 50). Arrival BW (47.69 ± 0.87 kg) and serum total protein (5.67 ± 0.09 g/dL) were not different between treatment groups. Neomycin in ST and LT was dosed in MR at a rate of 20 mg/kg of BW and was adjusted weekly according to BW. Calf BW was measured weekly for 49 d, and health indicators (fecal score, attitude score, respiratory score, and rectal temperature), MR intake, starter intake, and the use of additional electrolytes and antimicrobials were recorded daily. Calves in the CON group experienced a higher proportion of days with diarrhea (20.32 ± 0.02%) compared with ST (14.70 ± 0.02%) or LT (13.80 ± 0.02%) calves, as well as longer bouts of diarrhea (7.45 ± 0.38 d, 5.69 ± 0.46 d, and 5.62 ± 0.45 d for CON, ST, and LT calves, respectively). Calves in the CON group also experienced higher fecal scores (score of 0.64 ± 0.04) than ST (score of 0.53 ± 0.04) or LT (score of 0.49 ± 0.04) calves, especially at d 7. However, no differences were observed in other health-related measures. The time to reach first diarrhea and first respiratory illness was not different between treatments, nor was the time to recover from respiratory illness. The time to intervention with additional electrolytes or antimicrobials was not different between treatment groups. Furthermore, growth performance, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio were not different. No differences were found when comparing ST and LT, except in the defined daily dose of total antimicrobials received. Calves in the LT group received a higher overall dose than ST calves, and both ST and LT calves received a higher dose than CON calves, which received no prophylactic antimicrobials. Given that there were no differences in performance variables and no additional health benefits aside from reduced fecal scores in calves fed neomycin, current practices involving the use of antimicrobials on dairy and veal operations need to be considered more prudently. 相似文献

The objective of this randomized clinical trial was to determine if an intervention with colostrum replacer (CR; Premolac Plus, Zinpro; 125 g/d fed for 3 d) or a placebo milk replacer (Cows Match, Land O'Lakes Inc.; 125 g/d for 3 d) following a triggered alarm could ameliorate disease bouts in dairy calves. The alarm was set to detect negative deviations of milk intake (20% reduction) or drinking speed (30% reduction) in relation to a calf's 12-d rolling average feeding behavior. Calves were enrolled on this study (n = 42 CR, n = 42 placebo) when they triggered an alarm from d 14 to 50 on the feeder before weaning. Once calves were enrolled, calves received a bottle of either 125 g of CR or milk replacer mixed with 1 L of water for 3 d. Calves were enrolled on the automated milk feeder at age 4.0 ± 2.0 d (mean ± SD), were offered 10 L/d of the same milk replacer fed as a placebo, and had ad libitum access to calf starter measured by automated feeders. Weaning began at d 50, with 50% reduction of milk replacer across 14 d, and an additional 20% reduction for another 7 d before weaning at d 70. Calves were health scored from birth to 2 wk postweaning (88 ± 2.0 d of age) daily for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and diarrhea, and were weighed and scored using lung ultrasonography twice weekly. A BRD score ≥5 and an area of consolidated lung ≥3.0 cm2 was considered BRD positive; diarrhea was defined as a watery fecal consistency that sifted through the bedding. The effect of CR on BRD and diarrhea likelihood were calculated with logistic models; the 7 d before and after an alarm were fixed effects, with milk intake as a covariate. A Cox proportional hazards model evaluated the effect of CR on the hazard of being positive for BRD and diarrhea following enrollment, with sex as a fixed effect in the diarrhea model. The effect of CR on average daily gain the week following intervention was evaluated with linear modeling with repeated measures, and birth date was a random effect. After intervention, placebo calves had 1.64 (95% CI: 1.11–2.43) times greater odds of having a BRD bout compared with CR calves for the 7 d following intervention. Moreover, placebo calves had 1.50 (95% CI: 1.11–2.08) times greater odds of having lobar lung consolidation in the 7 d after intervention than CR calves. No difference was found in the likelihood of diarrhea in the 7 d after intervention (odds ratio: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.71–1.16). However, placebo calves had a 2.38 (95% CI: 1.30–4.33) times greater hazard of incurring BRD in the 14 d after intervention. Average daily gain was not associated with an intervention with CR for the 7 d after intervention (placebo: 0.73 ± 0.07 kg/d; CR: 0.70 ± 0.08 kg/d; LSM ± SEM). These results suggest CR may reduce BRD likelihood but did not influence growth in calves offered high allowances of milk. The growth of Ge islands on a pit-patterned Si(001) template is investigated in situ, combining grazing incidence diffraction, multiple wavelength anomalous diffraction, and small angle scattering. This allows monitoring in situ the detailed structural and morphological evolutions of the pits, of the wetting-layer and of the nucleated islands on the pit-patterned Si(001) substrate. It is shown that after Si regrowth, the Si substrate displays {107} and {1 1 11} facets. During the very first stages of Ge growth, the preliminary facets of the Si substrate are energetically unfavourable, and the pit facets break up into a rather complex pattern of {10n} and {11m} facets with n > 7 and m > 11. At 5 and 6 ML, intensity rods from {105} and {113}-type facets appear in the GISAXS images revealing the formation of pyramids and domes, respectively. The degree of ordering, the shape, strain and composition of the islands are characterized during the growth process to provide a detailed evolution of their structure and morphology. 相似文献

We propose a novel method for movement assistance that is based on adaptive oscillators, i.e., mathematical tools that are capable of extracting the high-level features (amplitude, frequency, and offset) of a periodic signal. Such an oscillator acts like a filter on these features, but keeps its output in phase with respect to the input signal. Using a simple inverse model, we predicted the torque produced by human participants during rhythmic flexion-extension of the elbow. Feeding back a fraction of this estimated torque to the participant through an elbow exoskeleton, we were able to prove the assistance efficiency through a marked decrease of the biceps and triceps electromyography. Importantly, since the oscillator adapted to the movement imposed by the user, the method flexibly allowed us to change the movement pattern and was still efficient during the nonstationary epochs. This method holds promise for the development of new robot-assisted rehabilitation protocols because it does not require prespecifying a reference trajectory and does not require complex signal sensing or single-user calibration: the only signal that is measured is the position of the augmented joint. A new algorithm is presented which aims to solve problems from compressed sensing - under-determined problems where the solution vector is known a priori to be sparse. Upper bounds on the solution vector are found so that the problem can be reformulated as a box-constrained quadratic programme. A sparse solution is sought using a Barzilai-Borwein type projection algorithm. New insight into the choice of step length is provided through a study of the special structure of the underlying problem together with upper bounds on the step length. Objective: Attentional control, the ability to maintain goal-directedness in the face of distraction, has been shown to decline in normal aging (NA) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the nature and extent of deficits is under debate. This study investigated attentional control in NA and AD compared to healthy young adults in several tasks such as setting, suppressing, switching, and preparing attention. Method: Fifty-two participants (17 AD, 17 NA, and 18 young participants) underwent the Tower of London, the Zoo map test, the Stroop test, letter verbal fluency, a computerized version of the Rule shift cards tests, the Trail making test, the Plus-minus test, and a reaction time task with variable preparatory intervals. Results: Analyses of variance showed that NA as compared to young participants were impaired in the Tower of London, the Stroop test, and the Rule shift cards tests. AD as compared to NA participants were impaired in all tests except the Stroop test. Principal component analysis in young adults confirmed the modularity of attentional tasks, which was reduced in NA and AD participants. Principal component analysis in all populations showed a decline of attentional control with NA and AD regardless of the tasks, with an increase in between-participants variability only between young and NA participants. Conclusions: Attentional control dysfunction is different in NA and AD: NA affects suppressing attention, switching attention for unpredictable but not predictable events, and preparing attention for unpredictable events, whereas AD affects setting, suppressing, switching, and preparing attention with less specificity. This paper reports mesoscopic Monte Carlo simulations (in which a ‘mesoscopic particle’ corresponds to a group of atoms or molecules) of interfacial films in ZnO-Bi2O3 binary ceramics. We observe the formation of Bi2O3-rich interfacial phases at the surface of ZnO grains (surface amorphous films) or at the grain-boundary between ZnO grains (intergranular films). In qualitative agreement with the experimental results reported on premelting of ceramics, the thickness of these films increases as the temperature increases up to the eutectic temperature. Moreover, the Bi2O3 concentration in the surficial or intergranular films is found to be larger than in the bulk. These surficial films exhibit both some layering and lateral ordering. 相似文献

The molybdenum chalcogenides Mo6X8 (X = S, Se) offer the possibility of intercalation/de-intercalation processes by chemical or electrochemical way. Besides the different applications of so-called Chevrel phases, we have proposed an electrochemical transfer junction for selective recovery of metallic cations in the perspective of recycling of industrial liquid mineral wastes. Thus, the knowledge of the diffusion properties of cations in the Chevrel phases is essential. Here we report on the electrochemical determination of diffusion coefficients of Co2+, Ni2+, Fe2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Mn2+ and Cu2+ for Mo6S8 and Mo6Se8 matrices. Experiments were realized on samples with compactness of 50% and 96–98%. They point out that the lower compactness is unfavorable to the mobility of the cobalt ions. From potential step chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the diffusion coefficients were found around 10−9 cm2 s−1, even 10−6 cm2 s−1 for copper. These results confirm the high mobility of transition metal ions in studied phases and complete the data for Co, Fe or Mn–Mo6S8 system and Mn–Mo6Se8 system. For the sulfide phase, the following sequence for is observed Ni < Co < Fe < Cd < Zn < Mn ? Cu and can be explained in regards with structural considerations and repulsion effects for copper. 相似文献

A model of the Scanning Electrochemical Microscope (SECM) as a lithographic tool is presented and used to get quantitative kinetic information from lithographic experiments. It is illustrated in the specific case of the local etching by anodic dissolution of a copper substrate by the SECM in the feedback mode. A theoretical model presents the expected profile of the etched hole in the simple case of the positive feedback behaviour. A steady-state behaviour is expected for the dimensionless shape of the hole, which depends only on the tip-substrate separation distance. The hole depth is then expected to linearly depend on the etching time. The model is then confronted to different experimental conditions where a Cu substrate is locally oxidized by a tip-electrogenerated Fe(bpy)33+ oxidant. The experiments agree with the theoretical predictions (steady-state dimensionless profile and linear evolution of the depth with time). Even though the system behaves under positive feedback, the kinetics of the etching process can readily be extracted from the hole characterization and its conversion into Faradaic yield. 相似文献
