A study was made of the infectivity of Hypoderaeum conoideum miracidia to a range of laboratory-reared specimens of freshwater snail species (Lymnaea peregra, L. corvus, Physella acuta, and Gyraulus chinensis) that coexist with the parasite in the same natural habitat. L. peregra and L. corvus were found to be equally susceptible to the parasite when specimens of each snail species were singly exposed to miracidia. However, when miracidia could choose either lymnaeid species, they showed a high degree of specificity toward L. peregra. The results obtained suggest that H. conoideum miracidia are capable of distinguishing among these lymnaeids in their orientation to the host. This indicates that miracidia might achieve specificity before actually contacting the snail host and suggests that during the host-snail orientation process they respond to signals different from those generated upon snail contact and invasion. The specificity toward L. peregra observed in H. conoideum miracidia seems to indicate adaptation to the snail community in their natural habitat, resulting in enhancement of their transmission. 相似文献

Cement production gives rise to CO2 emissions generated by the calcination of CaCO3 and by the combustion of fossil fuels, being responsible for about 5% of the global CO2 emissions. These emissions can be substantially reduced if cement replacement materials are used. In this paper two residual
ashes that can be used as mineral additions are considered: sugar cane bagasse ash and rice husk ash. A case study of the
construction of a dam with a blended material composed by cement and these two ashes is presented, indicating the potentiality
of its use for civil engineering applications. The analyses were performed using experimental and numerical tools developed
on the basis of a thermo-chemo-mechanical model. This model considers the coupling, within the theory of thermodynamics, of
the several phenomena that intervene in the hydration process, namely, exothermicity, thermo-activation, chemo-plasticity,

The work analyzes the performance of mortars prepared with two metakaolin samples and ground calcined-clay brick. Complete stress–strain deformation response under compression, porosity, sorptivity, pore size distribution and resistance to penetration of chloride ions have been determined for mortars with up to 40% cement replacement. Continuum damage mechanics analyzes using a scalar model allowed to extract information on the mode of deformation leading to failure of the mortars during compressive loading. It is shown that not only the ultimate strength, but also the pre-peak deformation response is influenced by calcined-clay addition. The ultimate strength of the mortar mixture depended on the type of calcined-clay added, but in all cases mortars with addition were marginally more compliant during the elastic deformation stage and more brittle as fracture approached. 相似文献

Knowledge of the conditions governing the initiation and propagation of cracks in hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures is a prerequisite
for a comprehensive understanding of HMA cracking mechanisms. Traditional strain measurement sensors have proved to be not
completely adequate in the sense that they do not provide pointwise measurements, thus not pinpointing the location of crack
initiation, and not accounting for non-uniform strain distributions. This paper presents a digital image correlation (DIC)
system for non-contact and full strain field measurements, conceived for the purpose of investigating the cracking behavior
of HMA mixtures. The whole system was developed so as to account for the special nature of typical HMA testing configurations.
An image matching technique (least squares matching) was employed for providing matches with sub-pixel accuracy. The performance
of the method was investigated by several tests. The DIC system was shown to overcome the shortcomings of traditional on-specimen

Novel alpha-helical antimicrobial peptides have been devised by comparing the N-terminal sequences of many of these peptides from insect, frog and mammalian families, extracting common features, and creating sequence templates with which to design active peptides. Determination of the most frequent amino acids in the first 20 positions for over 80 different natural sequences allowed the design of one peptide, while a further three were based on the comparison of the sequences of alpha-helical antimicrobial peptides derived from the mammalian cathelicidin family of precursors. These peptides were predicted to assume a highly amphipathic alpha-helical conformation, as indicated by high mean hydrophobic moments. In fact, circular dichroism experiments showed clear transitions from random coil in aqueous solution to an alpha-helical conformation on addition of trifluoroethanol. All four peptides displayed a potent antibacterial activity against selected gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (minimum inhibitory concentrations in the range 1-8 microM), including some antibiotic resistant strains. Permeabilization of both the outer and cytoplasmic membranes of the gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli, by selected peptides was quite rapid and a dramatic drop in colony forming units was observed within 5 min in time-killing experiments. Permeabilization of the cytoplasmic membrane of the gram-positive bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, was instead initially quite slow, gathering speed after 45 min, which corresponds to the time required for significant inactivation in time-killing studies. The cytotoxic activity of the peptides, determined on several normal and transformed cell lines, was generally low at values within the minimum inhibitory concentration range. 相似文献

Gas release, crystalline structure and ceramic properties were analysed during firing of clay raw materials and extruded bricks. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and methane emissions were measured during the firing cycle. Ammonia and sulphur dioxide were not observed within the detection limits. The evolution of crystalline phases, open porosity, volumetric shrinkage, rupture tension and apparent density were correlated to the amount of gases produced at different temperatures, ranging from 300 to 1200 °C. Freeze drying is a separation process based on the sublimation phenomenon. This process has the following advantages compared to the conventional drying process: the material structure is maintained, moisture is removed at low temperature (reduced transport rates), product stability during the storage is increased, the fast transition of the moisturized product to be dehydrated minimizes several degradation reactions. Freeze drying process has not been studied well enough. In order to put it to practice, a mathematical model based on fundamental mass and energy balance equations has been developed, based on a deterministic mathematical model proposed by Liapis and Sadikoglu [Drying Technol. 15 (3–4) (1997) 791], and used to calculate the amount of removed water and amount of residual water. The proposed model contains the freeze drying equations, which are solved by the orthogonal collocation and polynomial approximation—Jacobi method. The results show that the dynamic mathematical model represents well the process and is especially well suited for real time optimization. As a case study to illustrate the model utilization in a real time optimization procedure, the freeze drying process was optimized by the method of Successive Quadratic Programming (SQP) used for solution of non-linear equations, for skimmed milk and soluble coffee. The optimization procedure showed to be an important tool to improve the process performance since lower energy consumption and hence lower cost has been achieved to obtain the product with the same quality. 相似文献
