A methodology to obtain a Nusselt correlation for stirred tank reactors is presented. The novelty of the approach is the use of a validated computational model to obtain the heat‐transfer coefficients. The advantages of this new approach are many, including the possibility of testing different heat‐transfer configurations to obtain their Nusselt correlation without performing experimental runs. Physical phenomena involved was represented both qualitatively and quantitatively. The classical experimental work of (Oldshue and Gretton, Chem Eng Prog. 1954;50(12):615–621) illustrates the procedure. A sufficient number of virtual points in the whole range of the Reynolds number should be obtained. Results strongly depend on mesh refinement in the boundary layer, so a procedure is suggested to guarantee heat‐transfer coefficients are accurately estimated. The final Nusselt correlation was compared against all the 107 experimental points of the work by (Oldshue and Gretton, Chem Eng Prog. 1954;50(12):615–621), and an average deviation on the results of 10.7%. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 3912–3924, 2017  相似文献

We have constructed a laser-based particle counter that detects the fluorescence, as well as the elastic scattering, from individual airborne particles as they traverse a laser beam. This fluorescence particle counter (FPC) can detect fluorescence from μm-sized Bacillus subtilis spore agglomerates when illuminated with intense light at 488 nm from an argon ion laser, either ~ 0.7 kW cm?2 extracavity or ~ 50 kW cm?2 intracavity. We suspect that flavins in the spores are the molecules primarily responsible for the fluorescence, because the peak fluorescence emission of the biological materials at this excitation wavelength is in the range 530–550 nm, which is characteristic of flavins. Fluorescence from kaolin, hematite, and polystyrene particles was not detectable; the lack of fluorescence indicates that the FPC may be able to differentiate between biological and nonbiological aerosols. The FPC samples aerosol-laden air at a rate of ~ 1 mL s?1, and is capable of measuring aerosol concentrations up to several thousand per milliliter. The FPC may be helpful in detecting and characterizing airborne bacteria and other airborne particles of biological origin.  相似文献

Complex mixtures consist of homocyclic and heterocyclic polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) represented by benzo[ a ]pyrene (B a P) and 7 H -dibenzo[ c,g ]carbazole (DBC), respectively. To exert their biological effects, PACs are metabolized into reactive intermediates, which can form DNA adducts. In this preliminary report, male A/J mice were given a single intraperitoneal injection. Groups of three animals were treated with DBC (2 or 10 mg/kg) or B a P (10 or 100 mg/kg). Mixtures of DBC:B a P were given at doses of 2:10, 2:100, 10:10, or 10:100 mg/kg. DNA adduct levels in lungs collected three days posttreatment were determined by the 32 P-postlabeling method. The results indicate that, in the lungs, exposure to mixtures containing more B a P than DBC resulted in the absence of adduct 3 (DBC) and significantly higher total adduct levels. This suggests that B a P is being preferentially metabolized, resulting in less DBC adduction.  相似文献

A fluidized bed aerosol generator has been designed and built for the purpose of generating a constant output of dry, submicrometer particles with a large number density. The output of the fluidized bed for generating aerosol particles from dry soot powder has been characterized using a differential mobility analyzer and a condensation particle counter. The particle size distribution is bimodal, with a mode in the submicrometer diameter size range and a mode in the supermicrometer diameter size range. The larger diameter mode is fully separated from the smaller mode and can thus be easily removed from the aerosol flow using impaction techniques. The distribution in the submicrometer size range is nearly log-normal, with a count median diameter falling between 0.1 and 0.3 micrometers. A number density of greater than 105 particles cm-3 of soot particles in the submicrometer range can be produced, constant to within 25% (1 standard deviation) over a 4 h time period. The number density of particles produced in the submicrometer range was found to vary with the ratio of soot to bronze beads in the bed mixture, whether or not a feed system was used, and nitrogen flow rate through the fluidized bed and feed system.  相似文献

Predictions of the size response of various light-scattering aerosol counters manufactured by Particle Measuring Systems are reported. Models that exploit the high intensity of light available within the cavity of a He-Ne gas laser (generically referred to by the manufacturer as ''active scattering aerosol spectrometer probes'') are considered. The new response function properly averages over particle trajectories through nodes, antinodes, and intermediate regions of the intracavity laser beam. Our studies address probes having two basic scattering geometries: those that collect light scattered over a relatively narrow solid angle (subtending angles between 4° and 22° from the laser beam axis, as in the model ASASP-300 and ASASP-300X probes) and those that collect light over a rather large solid angle (between 35° and 120° , as in the ASASP-X, ASASP-100X, LAS-250X, LAS-X, and HS-LAS probes). The theoretical response predictions for both narrow-angle and wide-angle probes are compared to previous measurements of monodisperse test aerosols of polystyrene latex, dyoctylphthalate, nigrosin dye, and carbon black. The new response function predicts smoother dependence on particle size than the previous response function of Pinnick and Auvermann (1979) and is in better agreement with measurement. Response calculations for common atmospheric aerosol (water, sulfuric acid, ammonium sulfate, and black carbon) reveal the considerable sensitivity of the response to particle dielectric properties. Response functions for internal mixtures (black carbon inclusions in water droplets, quartz in sulfuric acid, carbon in ammonium sulfate, and metal in sulfuric acid) are somewhat different than those for homogeneous particles. Comparison of response calculations with the manufacturer's calibration reveal conditions for which the manufacturer's calibration is most appropriate and the potential for errors (as much as a factor of two in sizing) when it is blindly applied. Finally, response functions for multiline laser operation, as the manufacturer suggests might be appropriate for the HS-LAS and LAS-X probes, are nearly the same as for single-line lasing. These results should help the user of these instruments to more realistically interpret size distribution measurements.  相似文献

The city of Logan, Utah treats wastewater in 460 acres of facultative lagoons. Naturally growing algae in these lagoons uptake nutrients and remediate the wastewater, but require coagulation and flocculation for separation from wastewater. Cationic corn starch and cationic potato starch with a degree of substitution 1.34 and 0.82, respectively, were synthesized using 3‐methacryloyl amino propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and tested on Scenedesmus obliquus and lagoon wastewater. The zeta potential of the cationic starches tested over a pH range 5.0–10.0 showed an average of +16.0 and +15.1 mV for cationic corn starch and cationic potato starch, respectively. Total suspended solids removals of 90 and 85% were achieved with cationic corn starch and cationic potato starch, respectively, when tested with S. obliquus. Tests with wastewater showed total suspended solids removals of 80 and 60% for cationic corn starch and cationic potato starch, respectively. Total phosphorus removal values from wastewater were approximately 33, 29, and 42% for cationic corn starch, cationic potato starch, and alum, respectively, for a coagulant/algae ratio of 1.4 (wt/wt). These results indicate that cationic starch has the potential to replace alum for algae harvesting and wastewater treatment making it a suitable alternative to inorganic coagulants and flocculants. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new technique to quantify the bulk craze density of transparent plates was used to characterize the craze growth behavior of polycarbonate at various stress levels. The craze growth rates were found to exponentially increase with an increase in stress, obeying the Eyring equation for thermally activated processes in the presence of an applied stress. The residual mechanical properties of crazed polycarbonate were then correlated to the crazing stress, relative craze density and strain rate. The results show that increasing the bulk craze density does not affect the yield stress but decreases both the failure stress and ductility of polycarbonate. Also, a crazing stress of 40 MPa was found to cause a much larger degree of degradation of failure properties than a crazing stress of 45 MPa. Correlating the crazing stress to the craze microstructure revealed that fewer, larger crazes form at the lower crazing stress. Therefore, flaw size has a greater effect on the failure properties of polycarbonate than flaw quantity.  相似文献

We review theories of polyelectrolyte (PE) coacervation, which is the spontaneous association of oppositely charged units of PEs and phase separation into a polymer-dense phase in aqueous solution. The simplest theories can be divided into “physics-based” and “chemistry-based” approaches. In the former, PEs are treated as charged, long-chain, molecules, defined by charge level, chain length, and chain flexibility, but otherwise lacking chemical identity, with electrostatic interactions driving coacervation. The “chemistry-based” approaches focus on the local interactions between the species for which chemical identity is critical, and describe coacervation as the result of competitive local binding interactions of monomers and salts. In this article, we show how these approaches complement each other by presenting recent approaches that take both physical and chemical effects into account. Finally, we suggest future directions toward producing theories that are made quantitatively predictive by accounting for both long range electrostatic and local chemically specific interactions.  相似文献

Obesity develops early in childhood and is accompanied by early signs of adipose tissue (AT) dysfunction and metabolic disease in children. In order to analyse the molecular processes during obesity-related AT accumulation in children, we investigated genome-wide expression profiles in AT samples, isolated adipocytes, and stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells and assessed their relation to obesity as well as biological and functional AT parameters. We detected alterations in gene expression associated with obesity and related parameters, i.e., BMI SDS, adipocyte size, macrophage infiltration, adiponectin, and/or leptin. While differential gene expression in AT and adipocytes shared an enrichment in metabolic pathways and pathways related to extracellular structural organisation, SVF cells showed an overrepresentation in inflammatory pathways. In adipocytes, we found the strongest positive association for epidermal growth factor-like protein 6 (EGFL6) with adipocyte hypertrophy. EGFL6 was also upregulated during in vitro adipocyte differentiation. In children, EGFL6 expression was positively correlated to parameters of AT dysfunction and metabolic disease such as macrophage infiltration into AT, hs-CRP, leptin levels, and HOMA-IR. In conclusion, we provide evidence for early alterations in AT gene expression related to AT dysfunction in children and identified EGFL6 as potentially being involved in processes underlying the pathogenesis of metabolic disease.  相似文献
