This correspondence presents a novel application of the theta function defined by Lovasz. The problem of coding for transmission of a source through a channel without error when the receiver has side information about the source is analyzed. Using properties of the Lovasz theta function, it is shown that separate source and channel coding is asymptotically suboptimal in general. By contrast, in the case of vanishingly small probability of error, separate source and channel coding is known to be asymptotically optimal. For the zero-error case, it is further shown that the joint coding gain can in fact be unbounded. Since separate coding simplifies code design and use, conditions on sources and channels for the optimality of separate coding are also derived  相似文献

In this paper, a subspace based blind channel estimation scheme for downlink W-CDMA systems using chaotic codes under Weibull and Lognormal fading channel conditions is proposed and compared with W-CDMA system using PN codes. The algorithm provides estimates of multiuser channels by exploiting the structural information of the data output. The subspace of the (data + noise) matrix contains sufficient information for unique determination of channels and, hence, the signature waveforms and signal constellations. The proposed channel estimation algorithm is also implemented for multiuser—orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. Performance measures like bit error rate (BER) and root mean square error (RMSE) are plotted for Weibull and Lognormal fading channels. Signal constellations under Weibull and Lognormal channels are also plotted. Analytical and Simulation results for BER and RMSE are compared for W-CDMA system using PN codes and chaotic codes. Simulation results show that, chaos-based W-CDMA outperforms the PN-based W-CDMA in terms BER and RMSE. Simulation results of multiuser-OFDM system shows that performance is further improved when compared to the W-CDMA system.  相似文献

Entropy-constrained tree-structured vector quantizer design   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Current methods for the design of pruned or unbalanced tree-structured vector quantizers such as the generalized Breiman-Friedman-Olshen-Stone (GBFOS) algorithm proposed in 1980 are effective, but suffer from several shortcomings. We identify and clarify issues of suboptimality including greedy growing, the suboptimal encoding rule, and the need for time sharing between quantizers to achieve arbitrary rates. We then present the leaf-optimal tree design (LOTD) method which, with a modest increase in design complexity, alters and reoptimizes tree structures obtained from conventional procedures. There are two main advantages over existing methods. First, the optimal entropy-constrained nearest-neighbor rule is used for encoding at the leaves; second, explicit quantizer solutions are obtained at all rates without recourse to time sharing. We show that performance improvement is theoretically guaranteed. Simulation results for image coding demonstrate that close to 1 dB reduction of distortion for a given rate can be achieved by this technique relative to the GBFOS method.  相似文献

Many image compression techniques require the quantization of multiple vector sources with significantly different distributions. With vector quantization (VQ), these sources are optimally quantized using separate codebooks, which may collectively require an enormous memory space. Since storage is limited in most applications, a convenient way to gracefully trade between performance and storage is needed. Earlier work addressed this problem by clustering the multiple sources into a small number of source groups, where each group shares a codebook. We propose a new solution based on a size-limited universal codebook that can be viewed as the union of overlapping source codebooks. This framework allows each source codebook to consist of any desired subset of the universal code vectors and provides greater design flexibility which improves the storage-constrained performance. A key feature of this approach is that no two sources need be encoded at the same rate. An additional advantage of the proposed method is its close relation to universal, adaptive, finite-state and classified quantization. Necessary conditions for optimality of the universal codebook and the extracted source codebooks are derived. An iterative design algorithm is introduced to obtain a solution satisfying these conditions. Possible applications of the proposed technique are enumerated, and its effectiveness is illustrated for coding of images using finite-state vector quantization, multistage vector quantization, and tree-structured vector quantization.  相似文献

Twisting and annealing optical fiber for current sensors   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
We demonstrate that twisting a fiber a few turns per meter before it is annealed largely eliminates the residual linear birefringence. This dramatically improves the yield of annealed coils used for current sensing and makes it possible to use fibers that previously had large residual linear birefringence. Twisting the fiber is effective because the residual birefringence, associated with core ellipticity, is reduced to near zero by twisting. A theoretical model of the twisted and annealed fiber current sensor is compared to experimental data. We also show good temperature stability for a sensor made with this new technique  相似文献

The instrument concept of a future spaceborne millimeter/sub-millimeter radiometer is proposed in this paper for the remote sensing of ice clouds from satellite. The proposed radiometer is expected to operate at a series of frequencies within the millimeter and sub-millimeter wave range from 150 to about 900 GHz. Five frequencies are selected in the atmospheric windows, i.e., 150, 220, 463, 683, 874 GHz, and at each frequency there are two orthogonally polarized channels. Three water vapor channels located close to 183.31 GHz are also included in this instrument, since they can provide water vapor information, which is needed for ice cloud parameter retrieval. To simplify system design and test, a modular design philosophy is followed in the receiver frontend design and two antennas are used separately for the millimeter and sub-millimeter channels. Overall, the instrument requirements can be met with today's technology, except for the channels at the highest frequencies, where the radiometric sensitivity can be larger than the required 1.0 K for the 10 km spatial resolution (2.5 ms integration time). However, this situation can be improved by averaging neighboring pixels in data processing if certain compromise in the spatial resolution can be made at these frequencies.  相似文献

WindSat, the first satellite polarimetric microwave radiometer, and the NPOESS Conical Microwave Imager/Sounder both have as a key objective the retrieval of the ocean surface wind vector from radiometric brightness temperatures. Available observations and models to date show that the wind direction signal is only 1-3 K peak-to-peak at 19 and 37 GHz, much smaller than the wind speed signal. In order to obtain sufficient accuracy for reliable wind direction retrieval, uncertainties in geophysical modeling of the sea surface emission on the order of 0.2 K need to be removed. The surface roughness spectrum has been addressed by many studies, but the azimuthal signature of the microwave emission from breaking waves and foam has not been adequately addressed. Recently, a number of experiments have been conducted to quantify the increase in sea surface microwave emission due to foam. Measurements from the Floating Instrumentation Platform indicated that the increase in ocean surface emission due to breaking waves may depend on the incidence and azimuth angles of observation. The need to quantify this dependence motivated systematic measurement of the microwave emission from reproducible breaking waves as a function of incidence and azimuth angles. A number of empirical parameterizations of whitecap coverage with wind speed were used to estimate the increase in brightness temperatures measured by a satellite microwave radiometer due to wave breaking in the field of view. These results provide the first empirically based parameterization with wind speed of the effect of breaking waves and foam on satellite brightness temperatures at 10.8, 19, and 37 GHz.  相似文献

Samples of {4-(dimethylamino) stilben Z & E 4'-yl} dimesityl borane (BNS) were synthesised and investigated for their non-linear optical properties. The results show that the quadratic hyperpolarisability of the Z-isomer is smaller than that of the E-isomer, the beta value found for the latter being as high as 60 × 10?30 esu.  相似文献

We consider a multi‐source two‐way relay network, in which one source communicates with N other sources (n = 1,2,…,N) with the help of a single amplify‐and‐forward relay. We propose two opportunistic source scheduling schemes in such a network. According to the proposed schemes, in each transmission interval, only a single out of the N sources is selected, and this selected node acts as either transmitter or receiver depending on the channel conditions. For both schemes, tight closed‐form lower bounds of outage probability and bit error rate (BER) are derived. Asymptotic outage probability and BER that are valid for high signal‐to‐noise ratio regime are also analyzed, which can provide important insights on the impact of system parameters. The analytical results show that the full diversity order N + 1 can be achieved by both proposed schemes. Simulation results are also presented to corroborate the analysis.
