Hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristics of a three-phase airlift reactor were studied in a rectangular split-vessel reactor and using an air-seawater-marine sediment system. Experiments were conducted over a range of downcomer to riser cross-sectional area ratios (AD/AR = 0.65 to 1.0) for two-phase systems and for five sediment concentrations (5 to 25% w/v) using marine sediments. The influence of higher sediment concentrations (30 to 50% w/v) was examined for AD/AR = 1. The presence of fine sediment particles in the system had little effect on hydrodynamic and mass transfer parameters compared to the two-phase systems up to 25% loading, decreasing at higher loadings. The airlift reactor was found to meet the dissolved oxygen demand needed for a contaminated sediment treatment process. Axial distribution of the particles was uniform along the riser and the downcomer. Correlations were developed that described the hydrodynamic and mass transfer behaviour for all experimental conditions examined. 相似文献

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a prion disease found in both free-ranging and farmed cervids. Susceptibility of these animals to CWD is governed by various exogenous and endogenous factors. Past studies have demonstrated that polymorphisms within the prion protein (PrP) sequence itself affect an animal’s susceptibility to CWD. PrP polymorphisms can modulate CWD pathogenesis in two ways: the ability of the endogenous prion protein (PrPC) to convert into infectious prions (PrPSc) or it can give rise to novel prion strains. In vivo studies in susceptible cervids, complemented by studies in transgenic mice expressing the corresponding cervid PrP sequence, show that each polymorphism has distinct effects on both PrPC and PrPSc. It is not entirely clear how these polymorphisms are responsible for these effects, but in vitro studies suggest they play a role in modifying PrP epitopes crucial for PrPC to PrPSc conversion and determining PrPC stability. PrP polymorphisms are unique to one or two cervid species and most confer a certain degree of reduced susceptibility to CWD. However, to date, there are no reports of polymorphic cervid PrP alleles providing absolute resistance to CWD. Studies on polymorphisms have focused on those found in CWD-endemic areas, with the hope that understanding the role of an animal’s genetics in CWD can help to predict, contain, or prevent transmission of CWD. 相似文献

Inteins carry out protein-splicing reactions, which are used in protein chemistry, protein engineering and biotechnological applications. Rearrangement of the order of the domains in split-inteins results in head-to-tail cyclisation of the target sequence, which can be used for genetic encoding and expression of libraries of cyclic peptides (CPs). The efficiency of the splicing reaction depends on the target sequence. Here we used mass spectrometry to assess in vivo cyclic peptide formation from different hexameric target sequences by the DnaE split-inteins from Synechocystis sp. and Nostoc punctiforme, revealing a strong impact of the target sequence and of the intein on the intracellular peptide concentration. Furthermore, we determined the crystal structures of their pre-splicing complexes, which allowed us to identify F-block Asp17 as crucial for the DnaE-mediated splicing reaction. 相似文献

The use of microcapsules containing healing agents, which can serve as source of self-healing for coatings, was investigated. The appropriate self-repairing coatings are designed to be used for heavy-duty corrosion protection or for the protection of moisture-sensitive substrates like wood. Microcapsules based on thermoset resins (urea–formaldehyde and melamine–formaldehyde) which contained components of different chemical natures (resins or inhibitors) were fabricated using emulsion techniques. The subsequent characterization included optical, fluorescence, and electron microscopy as well as adapted microindentation techniques to determine capsule break forces. Different model coatings were formulated making use of varying amounts of healing agent-charged microcapsules. The coated samples were then injured under controlled conditions (by Erichsen cupping in the case of steel, by simulated hail in the case of wood) and then subjected to salt spray testing (natural and accelerated), weathering, or even real-life exposure, always in comparison with a blank. The results obtained demonstrate the superiority of microcapsule-based self-healing coatings compared to classical protection formulations, and appropriate coating systems have in the meantime been successfully brought to the market. 相似文献

High‐pressure acoustic levitation devices allows a contact‐free investigation of liquids. Here, acoustically levitated water droplets and pendant water droplets were examined in regards to the mass transfer coefficient in a static CO2‐atmosphere under elevated pressures. Based on the droplet geometry and the decrease of the droplet volume over time, it was possible to calculate the mass transfer coefficient of water into CO2 at any given time. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic graphical model to represent weakly annotated images. We consider an image as weakly annotated if the number of keywords defined for it is less than the maximum number defined in the ground truth. This model is used to classify images and automatically extend existing annotations to new images by taking into account semantic relations between keywords. The proposed method has been evaluated in visual-textual classification and automatic annotation of images. The visual-textual classification is performed by using both visual and textual information. The experimental results, obtained from a database of more than 30,000 images, show an improvement by 50.5% in terms of recognition rate against only visual information classification. Taking into account semantic relations between keywords improves the recognition rate by 10.5%. Moreover, the proposed model can be used to extend existing annotations to weakly annotated images, by computing distributions of missing keywords. Semantic relations improve the mean rate of good annotations by 6.9%. Finally, the proposed method is competitive with a state-of-art model. 相似文献
