This paper discusses strategies for controlling the surface chemistry and microstructure of materials to form protective and functional surfaces through controlled gas‐metal reactions. Potential applications range from oxidation, corrosion, and wear resistance to electrochemical devices such as fuel cells to catalysts. Phenomenological examples are presented for coatings designed to self‐grade under oxidizing conditions, and for the growth of simple and complex (binary and ternary) nitride and carbide phase surface layers by nitridation and carburization reactions. Specific systems discussed include environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) for Si‐based ceramics such as Si3N4 and SiC, the growth of continuous, protective CrN/Cr2N, TiN, VN, NiNbVN, and related simple nitride layers on Fe‐ and Ni‐base alloys, the possible formation of ternary nitride and carbide surface phases (e.g. Ti3AlC2 and related MAX‐phases) on intermetallic surfaces to improve oxidation resistance, and the formation of composite near‐surface structures in Ag‐SiO2 and Co(Mo)‐Co6Mo6C2 systems.  相似文献

The study reports H2S gas sensing characteristics of platinum (Pt) coated porous alumina (PoAl) films. The porous alumina (PoAl) thick layers were formed in the dark on aluminum substrates using an electrochemical anodization method. Thin semitransparent platinum (Pt) films were deposited on PoAl samples using chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The films were characterized using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thicknesses of coated and bare films were measured using ellipsometry. The sensing properties such as sensitivity factor (S.F.), response time, recovery time and repeatability were measured using a static gas sensing system for H2S gas. The EDAX studies confirmed the purity of Pt–PoAl film and indicated the formation of pure platinum (Pt) phase. The ellipsometry studies revealed the thickness of PoAl layer of about 15–17 μm on aluminum substrates. The SEM studies demonstrated uniform distribution of spherical pores with a size between 0.250 and 0.500 μm for PoAl film and nearly spherical platinum particles with average particle size ∼100 nm for Pt–PoAl film. The gas-sensing properties of these samples were studied in a home-built static gas characterization system. The H2S gas sensing properties of Pt–PoAl at 1000 ppm of H2S gave maximum sensitivity factor (S.F.) = 1200. The response time and recovery time were found to be 2–3 min and ∼1 min respectively. Further, the measurement of H2S gas sensing properties clearly indicated the repeatability of gas sensing response of Pt–PoAl film. The present study indicated the significant potential of Pt coated PoAl films for H2S gas sensing applications in diverse areas.  相似文献

A new donor–acceptor type poly{2-(3,4-didecyloxythiophen-2-yl)-5-[3,4-diphenyl-5-(1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole} (P1) has been designed and synthesized starting from thiodiglycolic acid, 1,2-diphenylethane-1,2-dione, and diethyl oxalate through multi-step reactions using precursor polyhydrazide route. The charge-transporting and linear optical property of the polymer has been investigated by cyclic voltammetric, UV–visible, and fluorescence emission spectroscopic studies. The UV–visible absorption spectrum of polymer in thin film form showed maxima at 420 nm. The polymer displayed bluish-green fluorescence both in solution and thin film form. The optical band gap is determined to be 2.27 eV. Third-order nonlinear optical property of the new polymer has been investigated at 532 nm using single beam Z-scan and degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) techniques with nanosecond laser pulses. The absorptive nonlinearity observed for the polymer P1 is of optical limiting type, which arises due to an “effective” three-photon absorption (3PA) process. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (χ(3)) of the polymer is found to be 0.831 × 10–12 esu. Both linear and nonlinear optical studies revealed that the new polymer (P1) is a promising material for applications in photonic devices.  相似文献

Dichloromethane extracts of culture broth from three strains of the entomopathogenic fungusHirsutella thompsonii var.synnematosa were toxic to two species of tephritid fruit fly and inhibited conidial germination in vitro in several other entomopathogenic fungi includingBeauveria bassiana, Tolypocladium spp., andMetarhizium anisopliae. A major metabolite, toxic to apple maggot,Rhagoletis pomonella, and inhibitory to conidial germination inB. bassiana, was isolated and identified as the antibiotic (+)-phomalactone, 6-(1-propenyl)-5,-6-dihydro-5-hydroxypyran-2-one. This article presents a framework for understanding aesthetic experience, with special reference to the natural environment. The framework entails 2 broad perspectives. First, from a functional perspective, aesthetic experiences are analyzed in terms of biological, sociocultural, and psychological systems of behavior; succinctly stated, objects are experienced aesthetically if they activate cognitive representations of response patterns that do or did contribute to the survival or enhancement of the species, society, or the self. Second, from the perspective of mediating mechanisms, the cognitive processes that enable aesthetic experiences are examined. The mechanisms discussed range from simple sensory processes to the activation and transformation of complex schemes. To the extent that cognitive representations of behavioral systems are flexible and subject to elaboration and refinement, aesthetic experience is a creative, skillful act. Mycobacterium bovis is the primary agent of tuberculosis (TB) in cattle. The failure of Ireland and some other countries to reach TB-free status indicates a need to investigate complementary control strategies. One such approach would be genetic selection for increased resistance to TB. Previous research has shown that considerable genetic variation exists for susceptibility to the measures of M. bovis infection, confirmed M. bovis infection, and M. bovis-purified protein derivative (PPD) responsiveness. The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic and phenotypic correlations between economically important traits and these measures of M. bovis infection. A total of 20,148 and 17,178 cows with confirmed M. bovis infection and M. bovis-PPD responsiveness records, respectively, were available for inclusion in the analysis. First- to third-parity milk, fat, and protein yields, somatic cell count, calving interval, and survival, as well as first-parity body condition score records, were available on cows that calved between 1985 and 2007. Bivariate linear-linear and threshold-linear sire mixed models were used to estimate (co)variance components. The genetic correlations between economically important traits and the measures of M. bovis infection estimated from the linear-linear and threshold-linear sire models were similar. The genetic correlations between susceptibility to confirmed M. bovis infection and economically important traits investigated in this study were all close to zero. Mycobacterium bovis-PPD responsiveness was positively genetically correlated with fat production (0.39) and body condition score (0.36), and negatively correlated with somatic cell score (−0.34) and survival (−0.62). Hence, selection for increased survival may indirectly reduce susceptibility to M. bovis infection, whereas selection for reduced somatic cell count and increased fat production and body condition score may increase susceptibility to M. bovis infection.  相似文献
