To determine if recombinant human Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (rhSOD) would prevent acute lung injury caused by hyperoxia and barotrauma, 26 newborn piglets were studied. Ten piglets were hyperventilated (arterial PCO2 15-20 Torr) with 100% O2 for 48 h. A second group received identical treatment for 4 h (n = 2) or 48 h (n = 8) but was given 5 mg/kg of rhSOD intratracheally at time 0. Six piglets were normally ventilated (arterial PCO2 40-45 Torr) for 48 h with 21% O2. Pulmonary function and tracheal aspirates were examined at time 0 and at 24 and 48 h, and bronchoalveolar lavage was performed at 48 h. In piglets treated with hyperoxia and hyperventilation, lung compliance decreased 42%, and tracheal aspirates showed an increase in neutrophil chemotactic activity (32%), total cell counts (135%), elastase activity (93%), and albumin concentration (339%) over 48 h (P < 0.05). All variables were significantly lower in rhSOD-treated piglets and comparable to normoxic control values. Surfactant remained active in all groups. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that at 48 h significant rhSOD was distributed homogeneously in terminal airways. Adding rhSOD to tracheal aspirates of hyperoxic hyperventilated piglets did not alter neutrophil chemotaxis, suggesting that rhSOD protected the lung by reducing the production of chemotactic mediators. Results indicate that acute lung injury caused by 48 h of hyperoxia and hyperventilation is significantly ameliorated by prophylactic intratracheal administration of rhSOD.  相似文献

Curiosity about probiotic bacteria is high. This is not surprising given the rapid growth of the natural products market in the USA, which was 22% in 1995 (New Hope Natural Media, Boulder, CO). Although probiotic cultures are only one component of that market, this trend shows that consumers in the USA are increasingly taking a pro-active stance towards their health and are purchasing products not only to eliminate what is perceived as dietary negatives but to increase the levels of dietary positives (Wrick, 1995). This shift in consumer attitude bodes well for the development of the American probiotic market. This article describes the composition, promotion and labelling of probiotic-containing products, discusses attributes of commercial probiotic bacteria, and estimates the size of the probiotic market in the USA. This market information was obtained from several published (Anon, 1996a,b) and unpublished but commercially available (SPINS Information Services, San Francisco, CA and New Hope Natural Media, Boulder, CO) sources.  相似文献

Lyapunov-based control for switched power converters   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Beginning with fundamental properties such as passivity or incremental passivity of the network elements comprised by a switched power converter, the nominal open-loop operation of a broad class of such converters is shown to be stable in the large via a Lyapunov argument. The obtained Lyapunov function is then shown to be useful for designing globally stabilizing controls that include adaptive schemes for handling uncertain nominal parameters. The use and impacts of accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL; reaction: CO2+H2O+CaCO3→Ca2++2(HCO3) is explored as a CO2 capture and sequestration method. It is shown that significant limestone resources are relatively close to a majority of CO2-emitting power plants along the coastal US, a favored siting location for AWL. Waste fines, representing more than 20% of current US crushed limestone production (>109 tonnes/yr), could provide an inexpensive or free source of AWL carbonate. With limestone transportation then as the dominant cost variable, CO2 mitigation costs of $3-$4/tonne appear to be possible in certain locations. Perhaps 10–20% of US point–source CO2 emissions could be mitigated in this fashion. It is experimentally shown that CO2 sequestration rates of 10−6 to 10−5 moles/sec per m2 of limestone surface area are achievable, with reaction densities on the order of 10−2 tonnes CO2 m−3day−1, highly dependent on limestone particle size, solution turbulence and flow, and CO2 concentration. Modeling shows that AWL would allow carbon storage in the ocean with significantly reduced impacts to seawater pH relative to direct CO2 disposal into the atmosphere or sea. The addition of AWL-derived alkalinity to the ocean may itself be beneficial for marine biota.  相似文献

This article has concentrated on the development of a set of core technologies key to the realization of an autonomous 2-g glider. One aspect which was not discussed in detail was the ease of construction and low cost of an individual MicroGlider. Understanding information sharing is an important challenge to modern organizations, and is likely to be increasingly considered when IT investment decisions are made world-wide. Our research study investigated the influence of cultural factors on information sharing in China. It was postulated that social network structures such as guanxi, Confucian dynamism, and collectivism could explain the degree to which information sharing took place between people in China. It was found that guanxi, Confucian dynamism, and collectivism all had a significant influence on information sharing.  相似文献
