We performed a macroscopic and microscopic study of the tongues of common opossums, Didelphis marsupialis, from South America. We studied two males and two females. We collected morphometric data on the tongue with precision calipers. For the light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses, we fixed tissue fragments in 10% formaldehyde and 2.5% glutaraldehyde, respectively. The opossum tongues averaged 5.87 ± 0.20 cm in length, 3.27 ± 0.15 cm in width at the lingual body, and 3.82 ± 0.15 cm in width at the root. The mean thickness of the lingual body was 1.8 ± 0.1 cm, and the thickness of the root was 3.82 ± 0.15 cm. Sharp filiform papillae were scattered across the entire tongue; conical filiform papillae occurred on the lingual body and tongue tip; fungiform papillae were scattered among the filiform papillae on the lingual body and tongue tip; and there were three vallate papillae at the root of the tongue. We found two strands of papillary projections in the tongue root. Despite the low variability observed in the lingual papillae, the morphological data obtained in this study may be related to the opossum's diverse food habits and the extensive geographic distribution of the species throughout America. Herein we describe inclusion complexes of commercial sunscreens in cyclodextrins and montmorillonites to generate new sunscreen derivatives with optimized functional properties such as water resistance and skin adherence. Four cyclodextrins (alpha-, beta-, and gamma-cyclodextrin, and beta-dimethyl cyclodextrin) and two montmorillonites (sodium and alkylammonium) were investigated for encapsulating some commercial sunscreens. Our results reveal a good yield and inclusion products with functional properties obtained by using kneading technique on Eusolex 2292 and Eusolex 6007 in beta-cyclodextrin and solubilization method on Eusolex 6007 and NeoHeliopan MA in montmorillonite. in formulating an injectable paste by additives incorporation. In this work, three different additives (carboxymethylcellulose,
agar polymer and sodium alginate) were incorporated to tricalcium phosphate, in concentrations of 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2 and 6.4 wt.%.
Injectability was evaluated through a new method developed for this purpose. Results showed that it was possible to obtain
injectable compositions of α-tricalcium phosphate cement. It was verified that the injectability depends on the rheological

The objective of this study was to evaluate the factors that may affect conception rates (CR) following artificial insemination (AI) or embryo transfer (ET) in lactating Holstein cows. Estrous cycling cows producing 33.1 ± 7.2 kg of milk/d received PGF2α injections and were assigned randomly to 1 of 2 groups (AI or ET). Cows detected in estrus (n = 387) between 48 and 96 h after the PGF2α injection received AI (n = 227) 12 h after detection of estrus or ET (n = 160) 6 to 8 d later (1 fresh embryo, grade 1 or 2, produced from nonlactating cows). Pregnancy was diagnosed at 28 and 42 d after estrus, and embryonic loss occurred when a cow was pregnant on d 28 but not pregnant on d 42. Ovulation, conception, and embryonic loss were analyzed by a logistic model to evaluate the effects of covariates [days in milk (DIM), milk yield, body temperature (BT) at d 7 and 14 post-AI, and serum concentration of progesterone (P4) at d 7 and 14 post-AI] on the probability of success. The first analysis included all cows that were detected in estrus. The CR of AI and ET were different on d 28 (AI, 32.6% vs. ET, 49.4%) and 42 (AI, 29.1% vs. ET, 38.8%) and were negatively influenced by high BT (d 7) and DIM. The second analysis included only cows with a corpus luteum on d 7. Ovulation rate was 84.8% and was only negatively affected by DIM. Conception rates of AI and ET were different on d 28 (AI, 37.9% vs. ET, 59.4%) and 42 (AI, 33.8% vs. ET, 46.6%) and were negatively influenced by high BT (d 7). The third analysis included only ovulating cows that were 7 d postestrus. Conception rates of AI and ET were different on d 28 (AI, 37.5% vs. ET, 63.2%) and 42 (AI, 31.7% vs. ET, 51.7%) and were negatively influenced by high BT (d 7). There was a positive effect of serum concentration of P4 and a negative effect of milk production on the probability of conception for the AI group but not for the ET group. The fourth analysis was embryonic loss (AI, 10.8% vs. ET, 21.5%). The transfer of fresh embryos is an important tool to increase the probability of conception of lactating Holstein cows because it can bypass the negative effects of milk production and low P4 on the early embryo. The superiority of ET vs. AI is more evident in high-producing cows. High BT measured on d 7 had a negative effect on CR and embryonic retention. 相似文献

Lamb chops inoculated with 2.23-2.83 log cfu/g of E. coli O157:H7 strain NCTC 12900 were packed in air (AP), vacuum (VP), and two modified atmospheres (MAP) consisting of 100% CO2 and a commercial mixture of 35% CO2/35% O2/30% N2. All samples (initial total counts <3.5 log cfu/g) were stored in a commercial cold storage facility set at 4 degrees C and one AP trial also at 12+/-1 degrees C in a temperature controlled incubator. Pathogen and indigenous flora evolution, physicochemical and sensory changes, surface packages temperature and MAP gas composition were monitored throughout the lamb meat shelf life. Temperature monitoring revealed that during chilled storage packed chops exceeded 7 degrees C about 3% of the time for periods of 10-20 min at 6 h intervals corresponding to defrosting cycles. In AP samples under these conditions, the E. coli O157:H7 strain had an overall increase of 0.48 log cfu/g by day 12. This increase, which may be regarded as an artefact of the sampling procedure, might also be a response to fluctuating temperatures. Regardless of rapid proliferation of the background microflora on AP lamb meat kept at 12+/-1 degrees C, the pathogen significantly increased by 2.35 log cfu/g after nine days. There was a slight decrease (0.20 log cfu/g) of the pathogen numbers after four weeks cold storage in VP despite a significant increase in lactic acid bacteria (LAB). With a relatively small outgrowth of LAB, chilled storage in 100% and 35% CO2 resulted in significant differences compared to similar conditions in air (decrease from initial numbers of 0.80 and 0.45 log cfu/g, respectively). Our data confirm the importance of effective temperature control to prevent pathogen growth on raw meat and also that contaminated meat remains hazardous regardless of refrigeration and protective packaging. Further studies are needed to determine the behaviour of E. coli O157:H7 at temperatures that fluctuate around the minimum for growth. 相似文献

Fifty seven suckling lambs (28 males and 29 females) of the Churra da Terra Quente breed were used to evaluate the effects of live weight and sex on carcass composition and meat quality traits. Lambs were slaughtered at three weight classes (<8 kg, 8–11 kg and >11 kg) according to “Borrego Terrincho–PDO” specifications. The left sides of the carcasses were totally dissected. The longissimus thoracis and lumborum muscle was used for meat quality determination. Dressing proportion and carcass fatness were not affected by weight class or sex. Muscle proportion was similar in all carcass joints for the three weight classes. The percentage of bone decreased at the higher weight class, while that of subcutaneous and intermuscular fat increased. Female lambs had higher muscle proportions and greater muscle/bone ratios in the carcass side than males. Muscle pH, colour, cooking losses and tenderness were not affected by gender and weight class. Female lambs and weight classes 8–11 kg and >11 kg had higher proportions of intramuscular fat. 相似文献

The presence of biogenic amines (BA) along the processing stages and storage period of "Painho de Portalegre" and its relationship with the NaCl concentration on their levels were evaluated. Total BA concentration of current "Painho de Portalegre" dry fermented sausage increased (P<0.001) with drying/smoking processing time, attaining 655mgkg(-1) dry matter (DM) at day 6, a level about six times higher than that obtained in seasoned raw material mixtures before casing stuffing (115mgkg(-1)DM). Between day 30 and 40 in the drying/smoking house, that amount increased 20-fold (2500mgkg(-1) DM) over the initial concentration. After one month of storage under vacuum at room temperature, the concentration decreased by almost half to 1561mgkg(-1)DM. Excluding tyramine, the other BA were already present in the minced raw materials. However the sum of cadaverine, putrescine, histamine and tyramine, was well below 5mgkg(-1) proposed as BA limit for meat of high hygienic quality. Cadaverine was the most concentrated BA at the last stage of the drying/smoking (1430-1254mgkg(-1)DM, after 30 and 40 days, respectively), almost double the concentration of putrescine (882-779mgkg(-1)DM), followed by tyramine, β-phenylethylamine and spermine (376-311, 24 and 27-23mgkg(-1)DM, respectively). Variation was detected among production batches, possibly due to poor control of the processing conditions in traditional manufactures and the effects of the prevailing weather conditions. A higher salt concentration in the final product, 6% compared to 3%, led to a significant reduction in the BA level (P<0.001). This difference was particularly relevant in the early stage of the drying/smoking phase, during which the greatest microbial development mainly occurred in relation to cadaverine, β-phenylethylamine, putrescine and tyramine levels. 相似文献

The five exons and the 5' and 3'-untranslated regions (5'-UTR and 3'-UTR) of the oGH gene were screened for mutations using PCR-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) procedures in 523 Serra da Estrela ewes and were found to be highly polymorphic. The region extending across and between the GH2-N and GH2-Z copies was sequenced allowing the design of primers for the specific PCR amplification of each copy. These were cloned and sequenced in 20 animals representative of all SSCP patterns. The corresponding genotypes were established for each copy following nucleotide sequencing of SSCP alleles. Twenty-four polymorphic sites were found at the GH2-N (or GH1) and fourteen at the GH2-Z copies. Eight amino acid substitutions were predicted at the GH2-N and six at the GH2-Z copies. Milk yield adjusted to 150 lactation days was analysed for the genotype of each oGH gene copy taken separately or together (associated genotypes) by restricted maximum likelihood (REML) through a univariate best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) animal model with repeated measures. Significant associations between genotypes and milk yield were observed. Within GH2-N genotypes there was a milk yield differential of 21.4+/-0.2 l/150 d between the most (N7) and the least (N5) productive ones. Within GH2-Z genotypes there was a differential of 21.6+/-0.2 l/150 d between the most (Z8) and the least (Z1) productive ones. The effect of associated GH2-N and GH2-Z genotypes revealed a differential of 39.6+/-0.3 l/150 d between the most (N1+Z7) and the least (N3+Z2) productive associated genotypes. The results show that GH2-N and GH2-Z genotypes significantly affect milk yield in Serra da Estrela ewes. Moreover, the apparent joint effect of GH2-N and GH2-Z genotype could improve milk yield in 25% as compared with the mean milk production of the analysed population. 相似文献

The influence of slaughter season and sex on intramuscular total lipids (ITL) neutral lipid (NL) and phospholipid (PL) compositions, cholesterol and α-tocopherol contents were evaluated in Biceps femoris (Bf), Longissimus dorsi (Ld) and Supraspinatus (Ss) muscles from 92 Barrosã-PDO (Protected Denomination of Origin) calves. ITL content in Bf muscle was affected by slaughter season and sex whereas NL content was only affected by slaughter season. Neither sex nor slaughter season influenced cholesterol and α-tocopherol contents in the muscles under study. Concerning NL composition, sex was an important source of variation on the proportions of total SFA and MUFA in all muscles. Irrespective of the considered muscle, males had higher total SFA but lower total MUFA and MUFA/SFA contents than females. Slaughter season influenced C18:2 cis-9 trans-11 (CLA) content in Bf (P < 0.01) and in Ss muscles (P < 0.05) with calves slaughtered in autumn showing higher values than their counterparts. Total MUFA, n-3 PUFA and n-6/n-3 ratio contents in Ld muscle were also affected by slaughter season. Regarding PL composition, slaughter season × sex interaction affected total SFA, PUFA/SFA and n-6 PUFA contents in Bf and Ss muscles. In addition, this interaction influenced total MUFA (P < 0.05) in Bf muscle and total PUFA (P < 0.01) in Ss muscle. CLA content in PL from Ld was influenced by sex (P < 0.05) and by slaughter season (P < 0.01), with females slaughtered in autumn presenting the highest content. These results clearly indicate that sex and slaughter season are important factors that influence the fatty acid composition of Barrosã-PDO veal. 相似文献
