Periodic discrete-time systems: stability analysis and robustcontrol using zero placement

A simple method (based on Floquet theory) for obtaining the characteristic equation (and hence stability) of periodic discrete-time systems is presented. Using this method it is shown that 2-periodic controllers can be used to relocate the zeros of SISO plants. Some examples are considered to illustrate the use of 2-periodic controllers for robust control of finite gain margin problems     

Analysis of a TEM Cell with Septum on a Dielectric Slab

A quasi-TEM approach based on conformal transformation is used for the determination of the characteristic impedance of a rectangular coaxial line (TEM cell) having a symmetrically located inner conductor (septum) supported on a dielectric slab of equal width. The method of determination of the capacitance of the dielectric-filled portion is discussed. The results on characteristic impedance for two values of dielectric constant are presented.     

Effect of gravity on visco-elastic surface waves in solids involving time rate of strain and stress of first order

The aim of the present paper is to study the effect of gravity on visco-elastic surface waves in solids. The wave velocity equations are deduced from Biot’s theory of initial stress on the assumption that gravity creates a type of initial stress — hydrostatic in nature. Resulting equations are used to investigate surface waves of the Rayleigh, Love and Stoneley types. Results are in good agreement with corresponding classical results when gravity and viscosity are neglected.     

Classification of pixels in a noisy grayscale image of polar ice

Often, in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of polar ice, one encounters shadow-like features across the images. Such features make it difficult to classify pixels into ice and water. Accordingly, it becomes a challenge to determine the true size and boundaries of ice floes in an SAR image of polar ice. We develop a simple statistical procedure which classifies pixels of an image by eliminating the effects of shadow-like features. Methodology developed in this paper is illustrated using some noisy SAR images of ice floes in the Arctic sea.
