Overview of wireless personal communications

This article presents an overview of the current state of wireless communications, including relevant ongoing activities in technology development, standards, and spectrum allocation. The authors discuss cellular radio, cordless telephony, and wireless data systems. Ongoing and planned future developments are summarized. The presentation is oriented toward broad coverage rather than technical depth. However, brief discussions of the air interfaces for existing digital cellular and digital cordless systems are provided, because the air interface bears heavily on system capacity and the environments in which the system can be used, as well as on the cost and complexity of the equipment     

A NEW METHOD OF DOPPLER CENTROID ESTIMATION FOR SPACEBORNE SAR-AMPLITUDE CORRELATION METHOD

The linear relationship between Doppler centroid and range walking in spaceborne SAR data is analyzed, and a new method to estimate Doppler centroid is proposed, which is so called amplitude correlation method. Compared with clutter-lock method which is widely used now, the new method has much less computation burden and is able to give higher estimation accuracy for a quasi-homogeneous scene or a non-homogeneous scene. This is clearly verified by the experimental results of estimating Doppler centroid for SEASAT-A raw data.     

改进的任意基FFT整序算法

本文提出了一种改进的适合于任意基ＦＦＴ变换的整序算法,改进整序算法采用循环嵌套结构,减少了运算量,实验结果表明,改进整序算法的运算时间较其它整序算法少。     

BER Performance of Frequency Domain Differential Demodulation OFDM in Flat Fading Channel

A closed form expression for the bit error rate (BER) performance of frequency domaindifferential demodulation(FDDD) for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system in flat fadingchannel is derived.The performance is evaluated by computer simulation and compared with the timedomain differential demodulation(TDDD).The results indicate that the performance of FDDD is betterthan that of TDDD,and the lower band of BER in the former is lower than that of the latter.     

Growth of bubbles containing plasma in water by high-frequency irradiation

Plasma was generated in water by irradiation at high frequency of 13.56 MHz, and the behavior of bubbles including the plasma was observed by a high-speed camera. The generation pattern of the bubbles was classified into four types according to liquid temperature and supplied power. Conducting the simulation, the maximum temperature in the bubble was found to be from 3500 K to 4300 K, and the decomposition of water molecule occurred. The gas in the bubble was found to become high ratio of hydrogen. The phenomenon can be regarded as a film boiling of exceptionally high heat flux.     

A 65 nm Single-Chip Application and Dual-Mode Baseband Processor With Partial Clock Activation and IP-MMU

Supporting both WCDMA with HSDPA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE, the 9.3 times 9.3 mm² SoC fabricated in triple-Vth 65 nm CMOS, has three CPU cores and 20 separate power domains. Unused power domains can be powered down to reduce the leakage power. Partial clock activation scheme especially focused on music playback scene dynamically stops a PLL and clock trees when not necessary and reduces power consumption from 33.6 mW to 19.6 mW. IP-MMU translates virtual address to physical address for 18 hardware-IPs and virtual address space can be allocated when necessary and can be freed after its operation, reducing external memory by 43 MB. Video performance of D1 (720 times 520) size with 30 frames per second for MPEG/AVC decoding and encoding can be achieved under mixed virtual and physical address usage.     

Application of SPRT to an image data sequence for a remote monitoring system

Recently, remote monitoring camera systems have been widely used for security. In such systems, one important function is that the system automatically detects any change in the scenes from the monitoring cameras. In wireless remote monitoring camera systems, the images of the scenes are generally transmitted as compressed data (e.g., JPEG file), because of the capacity of the wireless channel. This article shows the automated detection of the change point in time-series data of compressed JPEG file quantity (Kbytes) from the monitoring camera by applying the sequential probabilistic ratio test (SPRT) and the Chow test, which is well known as a standard method for detecting structural change in time-series data.     

Coupling Analysis of GaAs-Based Microdisk Lasers With Different External Claddings

In this paper, we analyze the coupling of light from a GaAs microdisk laser into a waveguide. Starting from an air cladding, we examine several configurations to couple light into the waveguide with different cladding structures aimed to foster light coupling into the waveguide: photonic crystal and metallic (plasmonic cladding). In these coupling schemes, we tried to optimize the coupling of the emitted light into the waveguide, while maintaining a reasonable quality factor to allow the lasing operation of the device. We show that a plasmonic layer, introduced beside the waveguide can lead to a significant improvement in the coupling efficiency, reaching an efficiency close to 80%.     

Decay of material properties of degraded MEA caused by repeated cold starts under subzero conditions in polymer electrolyte fuel cells

This study investigated the characteristics of cell performance degradation, decline of component performance, and changes in the properties of membrane electrode assembly materials caused by repeated cold starts under a subzero condition of ?30 °C. It was made clear that functional decay appeared mainly at the cathode due to increased proton conductive impedance and reduction of reactivity of the electrode catalyst. Among the cathode components, an increase in proton conductive impedance in the cathode electrolyte was dominant. Furthermore, the application of ion chromatography and a newly developed proton‐induced gamma‐ray emission method to measure fluorine in the off‐gas drain revealed that decomposition of the electrolyte was dominant in the cathode catalyst layer. A decrease in fluorine in the cathode electrolyte measured by fluorine‐19 nuclear magnetic resonance confirmed this decomposition. A hypothesis is also presented concerning the cause of the performance degradation. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
