In this article, we report the mechanical and biocompatibility properties of injection‐molded high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) composites reinforced with 40 wt % ceramic filler [hydroxyapatite (HA) and/or Al2O3] and 2 wt % titanate as a coupling agent. The mechanical property measurements revealed that a combination of a maximum tensile strength of 18.7 MPa and a maximum tensile modulus of about 855 MPa could be achieved with the injection‐molded HDPE–20 wt % HA–20 wt % Al2O3 composites. For the same composite composition, the maximum compression strength was determined to be 71.6 MPa and the compression modulus was about 660 MPa. The fractrography study revealed the uniform distribution of ceramic fillers in the semicrystalline HDPE matrix. The cytocompatibility study with osteoblast‐like SaOS2 cells confirmed extensive cell adhesion and proliferation on the injection‐molded HDPE–20 wt % HA–20 wt % Al2O3 composites. The cell viability analysis with the 3(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay revealed a statistically significant difference between the injection‐molded HDPE–20 wt % HA–20 wt % Al2O3 composites and sintered HA for various culture durations of upto 7 days. The difference in cytocompatibility properties among the biocomposites is explained in terms of the difference in the protein absorption behavior. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The atmospheric Se levels in Mumbai varied between 0.02 and 1.92 ng m(-3) with a mean concentration of 0.21 ng m(-3). The daily intake of Se by the adult population of Mumbai is 61.9 microg day(-1). Differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry (DP-CSV) has been used for the determination of Se in air particulate and food samples. The detection limit of Se using DPCSV was found to be 0.05 ng ml(-1). The reliability of estimation was further assessed through the analysis of standard reference materials (SRMs), tuna fish, animal blood, milk powder and fish tissue obtained from IAEA. The frequency distribution of dietary intake levels of selenium for Mumbai adults showed that approximately 61% of the studied population have a dietary intake of 30-90 microg day(-1). Ingestion was found to be the main route of Se exposure for Mumbai adults. The turn over time of Se through blood is 17 days.  相似文献

In air-conditioning systems, conditioned warm/cold air is supplied to the room depending upon winter/summer. This air should be properly distributed into the room so that there are neither draft conditions nor stagnant zones. In this investigation air circulation and temperature distribution in a room have been studied for a particular location of air inlet and outlet on opposite walls. Two-dimensional, steady, laminar, incompressible flow has been considered. Navier–Stokes equation and energy equations in two-dimensional rectangular Cartesian co-ordinates have been numerically solved using control volume method. Boussinesq's approximation has been used for buoyancy force.  相似文献

Concentrations of the essential elements Zn and Cu and potentially toxic elements Pb and Cd in different milk samples and baby food materials were measured, primarily to assess whether the intakes comply with recommended desired levels for essential and permissible levels for toxic elements. The geometric mean concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn in different types of milk were found to vary from 1.70 to 3.35, 0.07 to 0.10, 43.2 to 195 and 1772 to 4230 micrograms/l, while the same in different baby foods had values from 39.5 to 77.7, 0.45 to 17.7, 1106.3 to 3157.3 and 9367 to 34,592 micrograms/kg, respectively. The concentration of Cd was found to be very low (0.1 microgram/l) and fairly constant in all types of milk. The lead content in cow milk was observed to be lowest even in comparison with breast milk. Concentrations of all these metals are approximately one order of magnitude higher in baby food products than those observed in different types of milk owing to higher fat content. The infant baby food Amul Spray contains low concentrations of toxic (Pb and Cd) and high concentrations of essential (Cu and Zn) elements. The daily intakes of Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn by infants through milk and baby foods marketed in Mumbai city have also been estimated. The daily intakes of Pb (1.1 micrograms/kg) and Cd (0.01 microgram/kg) for infants through baby foods are well below the recommended tolerable levels of 3.57 micrograms/kg and 0.8-1.0 microgram/kg, respectively. Similarly the daily intake levels of essential elements are also significantly lower than the recommended desirable levels of 3-5 mg and 0.5-1.0 mg for Zn and Cu, respectively. Milk from an Indian mother also does not provide adequate levels of essential elements to the infants and children.  相似文献

The present work predicts the performance parameters, namely brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), brake thermal efficiency (BTE), peak pressure, exhaust gas temperature and exhaust emissions of a single cylinder four-stroke diesel engine at different injection timings and engine load using blended mixture of polanga biodiesel by artificial neural network (ANN). The properties of biodiesel produced from polanga were measured based on ASTM standards. Using some of the experimental data for training, an ANN model was developed based on standard back-propagation algorithm for the engine. Multi-layer perception network was used for non-linear mapping between input and output parameters. Different activation functions and several rules were used to assess the percentage error between the desired and the predicted values. It was observed that the developed ANN model can predict the engine performance and exhaust emissions quite well with correlation coefficient (R) 0.99946, 0.99968, 0.99988, 0.99967, 0.99899, 0.99941 and 0.99991 for the BSFC, BTE, peak pressure, exhaust gas temperature, NOx, smoke and unburned hydrocarbon emissions, respectively. The experimental results revealed that the blended fuel provides better engine performance and improved emission characteristics.  相似文献

In this study two relatively new arsenic field kits, namely Wagtech Digital Arsenator (WFTK) and Chem-In Corp field test kit (CFTK) for arsenic were evaluated. The response of the two field test kits to known standards (Both As(III) and As(V)) is detailed. In addition around 157 arsenic-contaminated field samples obtained from various locations of Ballia and Kanpur districts, U.P., India were tested using the two kits and the results were compared with the laboratory-based colorimetric method (silver diethyldithiocarbamate method, SDDC). The concentration of arsenic in the 157 samples ranged from 0 to 468 microg l(-1). WFTK is seen to be suitable for measuring arsenic concentration <5-100 microg l(-1) using the digital meter. CFTK was not able to detect As(V) and its usage is cautioned in Uttar Pradesh where As(V) is seen to occur in appreciable concentrations. The Pearson's correlation between the silver diethyldithiocarbamate method and WFTK was found to be 0.87 and for the corresponding correlation with CFTK was 0.41 in the concentration range used in this study. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients comparing the WFTK and CFTK to laboratory measurements in the concentration range of 0-100 microg l(-1) were 0.95 (p<0.001) and 0.64 (p<0.001) respectively.  相似文献

The present investigation was carried out to screen native plants growing in fly-ash (FA) contaminated areas near National Thermal Power Corporation, Tanda, Uttar Pradesh, India with a view to using them for the eco-restoration of the area. A total number of 17 plants (9 aquatic, 6 terrestrial and 2 algal species) were collected and screened for heavy metal (Fe, Zn, Cu, Mo, B, Si, Al, Cr, Pb, Cd, Hg and As) accumulation. Differential accumulation of various heavy metals by different species of plants was observed. Hydrilla verticillata was found to be the most efficient metal accumulator among 9 aquatic plants, Eclipta alba among 6 terrestrial plants and Phormedium papyraceum between 2 algal species. In general, the maximum levels of most metals were found in terrestrial plants while the lowest in algal species. However, translocation of the metals from root to shoot was found to be higher in aquatic plants than terrestrial ones. These results suggest that various aquatic, terrestrial and algal species of plants may be used in a synergistic way to remediate and restore the FA contaminated areas.  相似文献

We explore a novel phenomenon of focused ion beam (FIB) induced bending of carbon nanopillars or cantilever structures. The bending occurs towards the ion beam during scanning. The explanation of this bending has been sought on the basis of a model which considers temperature rise and gradients caused by the impinging ion beam. The process is controllable and reversible, which makes it highly suitable for in?situ manipulation to make desired 3D shapes by the piecewise bending of the nanopillars and cantilever structures during their fabrication using electron beam or FIB chemical vapor deposition (EB-CVD or FIB-CVD). Its usefulness in the fabrication of nanosize mechanical components has been demonstrated by making a branch structure from a single cantilever.  相似文献

Ginger (Zingiber officinale, Zingiberaceae) has been widely used as a dietary spice, and as a traditional oriental medicine. The rhizome of ginger contains pungent vanillyl ketones, including [6]-gingerol and [6]-paradol, and have been credited with therapeutic and preventive health benefits, including anti-cancer activity. Prostate cancer is an attractive target for chemoprevention because of its ubiquity, treatment-related morbidity, long latency between premalignant lesions and clinically evident cancer, and defined molecular pathogenesis. Here we are reporting the modulatory effects of [6]-gingerol on testosterone-induced alterations on apoptosis related proteins in both in vitro, androgen sensitive LNCaP cells and in vivo, ventral prostate of Swiss albino mice. [6]-gingerol treatment resulted apoptosis in LNCaP cells, as indicated by depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential, increase in sub G1 cell population by flow cytometry and the appearance of DNA laddering pattern in agarose gel electrophoresis. Results of western blot analysis showed that [6]-gingerol upregulated the testosterone depleted levels of p53 in mouse prostate and upregulated its downstream regulator Bax and further activated Caspase-9 and Caspase-3 in both LNCaP cells and in mouse prostate. We also found downregulation of testosterone induced antiapoptotic proteins, Bcl-2 and Survivin expression by [6]-gingerol in both LNCaP cells and in mouse ventral prostate. Thus, [6]-gingerol shows its protective effects in both in vivo and in vitro prostate cancer models by modulation of proteins involved in apoptosis pathway.  相似文献
