Dynamic guided-mode resonant grating filter with quadratic electro-optic effect

We propose a novel and simple concept of dynamic switching of guided-mode resonant grating filters with quadratic electro-optic effect within a waveguide layer modulated by external fields due to comb-shaped electrodes that also behave as a grating. As the device has subwavelength structure, the performance must be analyzed electromagnetically. We describe numerical simulation with the finite-difference time-domain method specially modified so that it can treat inhomogeneous anisotropic media such as lead lanthanum zirconate titanate.     

Phenotypic alterations of neuropeptide Y, vasoactive intestinal peptide and choline acetyltransferase in rat cultured chromaffin cells as effected by nerve growth factor and glucocorticoid

We assessed changes in neuropeptide Y (NPY), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunoreactivities when neonatal rat chromaffin cells were cultured in a medium containing nerve growth factor (NGF), or the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone (DEX), examining whether their expression was correlated with the morphological changes induced by NGF and DEX. All of the chromaffin cells in culture were tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunopositive regardless of whether they extended processes. TH-immunoreactive materials of NGF-treated chromaffin cells were distributed in all the cytoplasmic processes, even at the tips of growth cones. The percentage of NPY-positive chromaffin cells did not change markedly when treated with NGF or DEX throughout the 14 days in culture. The proportion of VIP-positive chromaffin cells increased gradually in the NGF-treated group and that of ChAT-positive cells in the group was similar to VIP. The morphological alterations induced by NGF were not correlated with the changes in proportions of NPY-, VIP- or ChAT-positive chromaffin cells. The percentages of VIP- or ChAT-immunopositive chromaffin cells in the NGF-treated group showed much greater increases than those in the DEX-treated group. These findings suggest that NGF might modulate the phenotypic changes of neuropeptides and amines in rat chromaffin cells.     

Membrane targeting and binding of the 74-kDa form of mouse L-histidine decarboxylase via its carboxyl-terminal sequence

The role of the C-terminal region of the 74-kDa form of L-histidine decarboxylase (HDC) in the targeting to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) was investigated in COS-7 cells. The deletion of a 10-kDa segment (residues 578-662) of the C-terminal end of HDC, especially a 20 amino acid sequence (residues 588-607), abrogated the targeting to the ER. The C-terminal 10-kDa portion is sufficient to target the green fluorescent protein (GFP) to the ER. The 74-kDa form of HDC synthesized in an in vitro translation system post-translationally associated with the heterogeneous canine microsomal membranes. These results suggest that the C-terminal 10-kDa portion of HDC contains a signal necessary for HDC to be targeted to the ER membrane.     

Statistical aspects of the fatigue life of nickel-silver wire under two-level loading

The statistical aspects of fatigue life under variable stress amplitudes have been studied experimentally. using 1000 specimens, tests at two stress levels were performed in addition to constant amplitude tests. From the study a ‘Transfer law of reliability curve’ has been determined. This law enables the distribution of fatigue life under variable stress amplitudes to be predicted from that under constant amplitude. It has also been clearly shown that the cummulative cycle ratio $\text{Σ}\text{n}\text{/}\text{N}$ is statistically distributed, where $\text{N}$ is the mean life under constant amplitude and the mean value of $\text{Σ}\text{n}\text{/}\text{N}$ is approximately unity; that is, Miner's rule is satisfied statistically These results have been obtained using the transfer law of reliability curve.     

The effect of thiophene sequence separation on air-stable organic thin-film transistor materials

The relationship between thiophene sequences and organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) characteristics was studied to determine their effect on ionization potential, molecular orientation, and air stability. Two types of molecular structures were used: continuous sequence and divided sequence thiophenes. The length of thiophene sequence did not affect FET characteristics but did affect ionic potential and air stability. Furthermore, materials with divided thiophene sequences showed no change in OTFT characteristics when exposed to air. These results suggest that separation of thiophene sequences can improve air stability, which is a problem of thiophene-based materials.     

Dehydrogenation of Cyclohexane Over Ni Based Catalysts Supported on Activated Carbon using Spray-pulsed Reactor and Enhancement in Activity by Addition of a Small Amount of Pt

The polycrystalline silver after pre-treated with oxygen at high temperature was found to show excellent activity and selectivity in the process of direct dehydrogenation of methanol to anhydrous formaldehyde and the active oxygen species for this reaction was observed and proposed as the active centeres with in situ Raman scattering.     

EXAFS and FTIR characterization of tetrarhodium carbonyl clusters attached on tris-(hydroxymethyl)phosphine grafted silica catalytically active for olefin hydroformylation

A series of perovskites of the formula Ca_1–x Sr _x Ti_1–y M _y O_3–, M=Fe, Co, Cr or Ni,x = 0–1,y = 0–0.6, has been synthesized by a modified sol-gel method using citrate. Several of these materials were proved to be stable under operating conditions in reducing atmospheres of air and hydrocarbons. An outline of the synthesis procedure is given, together with the results of XRD, SEM, BET, TG, DTA and IR characterization before and after catalytic testing. The solubility of Ni and Cr in this perovskite was very limited, and the solubility of Co decreased abruptly above 1173 K. The solubility range of Ca and Sr on alkaline earth sites is 100%.
