This paper presents initial information on the development and validation of three team task analysis scales. These scales were designed to quantitatively assess the extent to which a group of tasks or a job is team based. During a 2-week period, 52 male students working in 4-person teams were trained to perform a complex highly interdependent computer-simulated combat mission consisting of both individual- and team-based tasks. Our results indicated that the scales demonstrated high levels of interrater agreement. In addition, the scales differentiated between tasks that were predetermined to be individual versus team based. Finally, the results indicated that job-level ratings of team workflow were more strongly related to team performance than were aggregated task-level ratings of team-relatedness or team workflow. These results suggest that the scales presented here are an effective means of quantifying the extent to which tasks or jobs are team based. A research and practical implication of our findings is that the team task analysis scales could serve as criterion measures in the evaluation of team training interventions or predictors of team performance. 相似文献

The relationship between self-reported depression and a clinical diagnosis of depression was investigated. Within 2 wks of completing the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), a stratified sample of 425 primary medical care patients received the structured interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III-Revised (DSM-III-R). In the weighted data set, the CES-D was significantly related to a diagnosis of depression but also to other Axis I disorders. Most distressed subjects were not depressed, a fifth of the patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) had low distress, and the CES-D performed as well in detecting anxiety as in detecting depression. MDD, other depression diagnoses, and anxiety and substance use disorders were all significant predictors of CES-D score. Differences in demographic variables, treatment history, and impairment highlight the nonequivalence of the self-report scale and diagnosable depression. The use of a self-report in place of an interview-based diagnostic measure in the study of depression, as well as the use of such a report as a screening device, is discussed. ABSTRACT: Sour taste is the key element in the flavor profile of food acidulants. Understanding the chemistry and physiology of sour taste is critical for efficient control of flavor in the formulation of acid and acidified foods. After a brief introduction to the main applications of food acidulants, several chemical parameters associated with sour taste are discussed. Special emphasis is given to hydrogen ions, protonated (undissociated) acid species, titratable acidity, anions, molar concentration, and physical and chemical properties of organic acids. This article also presents an overview of the physiology of sour taste and proposed theories for the transduction mechanisms for sour taste. The physiology of sour taste perception remains controversial and significant diversity exists among species with regard to cellular schemes used for detection of stimuli. The variety of mechanisms proposed, even within individual species, highlights the complexity of elucidating sour taste transduction. ABSTRACT: Research was conducted to determine whether Leuconostoc mesenteroides starter cultures with and without malolactic activity (MDC+ and MDC- , respectively) influenced sensory and chemical properties of sauerkraut. No sensory differences were found between MDC+ and MDC− sauerkraut ( P ≥ 0.05). In addition, sulfur compound profiles of the resulting sauerkraut were nearly identical. Brining at lower NaCl (0.5%) with either inoculum changed both the microbiology and chemistry of the fermenting sauerkraut, leading to decreased sauerkraut sulfur flavor. Quantification of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS), methyl methanethiosulfinate, and methyl methanethiosulfonate (MMTSO2 ) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry showed that sauerkraut sulfur flavor correlated linearly with DMTS and MMTSO2 ( P ≤ 0.01). 相似文献

Proteins containing regions of amino acid bias are often found in eukaryotes and are associated with particular functional groups. We have carried out a genomic analysis of yeast proteins containing regions with a significant bias of Ser and Thr residues. Our findings reveal that a high number are cell surface proteins or regulatory proteins involved in many aspects of cell differentiation. Furthermore, in Saccharomyces-related species, a highly significant correlation exists between the frequency of Ser-rich regions and DNA repeats, indicating that their generation may rely on similar factors. Cluster analysis shows that Ser/Thr-rich regions, located within the tandem repeats of cell surface proteins, are encoded to an increased frequency by UCU (Ser) and ACU/ACC (Thr), implying that mutational events that generate iterations could involve these codons. Replication slippage is proposed to be a contributing factor, as mounting evidence suggests that repeat generation in cell surface proteins can occur independently of meiosis. To reinforce this argument, we have discovered a premeiotic association between Mre11p, a nuclease involved in DNA repair, and ORFs encoding Ser/Thr-rich regions. Several macromolecules involved in the glycosylation and phosphorylation of proteins require Ser and Thr residues as binding sites. Ser/Thr-rich regions, through polymorphisms, are associated with the evolution of functional sites, particularly in providing motifs for glycosylation and phosphorylation. These results point to a Ser/Thr-biased somatic mutation mechanism that contributes to rapid evolution in yeast. 相似文献

More than 80 years of silver mining in the Cobalt area (Ontario, Canada) has led to widespread contamination of water with arsenic. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of changes in redox conditions on the stability of As in samples collected from a tailings wetland in the historic mining camp. Dissolved metal concentrations were monitored while tailings samples (approximately 1300 mg of As kg(-1), pH 7.4) were subjected to 30 days of reduction. Reoxidation of the samples was accomplished by air drying. The As oxidation states in the original, reduced, and reoxidized samples were determined using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Arsenic speciation was affected by changes in redox conditions, resulting in rapid mobilization of As during reduction. Glucose input had a significant impact on the dissolution and speciation of As, suggesting that the As transformation was microbially mediated. When carbon was not limiting, the combination of reducing conditions and lower pH favored the formation of As(-I) species. 相似文献

Purpose: The prevalence of adult-level household food insecurity was examined among clients receiving outpatient diabetes health care services. Methods: Participants were adults diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, who attended individual counselling sessions at Calgary's main clinic from January to April 2010. Clinicians were trained to administer the Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM), and did so with clients' assent during their scheduled sessions. Results: The prevalence of adult-level household food insecurity among 314 respondents was 15.0% (95% confidence interval [CI], 11.2 to 19.4); 6.7% (95% CI, 4.2 to 10.0) of clinic attendees were categorized as severely food insecure. The comparable rates obtained in Alberta in 2007 using the same instrument (HFSSM) were 5.6% and 1.2%, respectively. Conclusions: Household food insecurity rates among individuals with diabetes in active care are higher than rates reported in Canadian population surveys. Severe food insecurity, indicating reduced food intake and disrupted eating patterns, may affect this population's ability to follow a pattern of healthy eating necessary for effective diabetes management. This study reinforces the importance of assessing clients' inability to access food because of financial constraints, and indicates that screening with a validated measure may facilitate identification of clients at risk. 相似文献
