This paper reviews North Atlantic shelf seas palaeoclimate during the interval 4-3Ma, prior to and incorporating the 'Mid-Pliocene warm period' (ca 3.29-2.97Ma). Fossil assemblages and stable isotope data demonstrate northwards extension of subtropical faunas along the coast of the Carolinas-Virginia (Yorktown and Duplin Formations) relative to the present day, suggesting a more vigorous Florida Current, with reduced seasonality and warm water extending north of Cape Hatteras (reconstructed annual range for Virginia 12-30 degrees C). This interpretation supports conceptual models of increased meridional heat transport for the Pliocene. Sea temperatures for Florida (Lower Pinecrest Beds) were similar to or slightly cooler than (summers 25-27 degrees C) today, and were probably influenced by seasonal upwelling of cold deep water. Reduced seasonality is also apparent in the Coralline Crag Formation of the southern North Sea, with ostracods suggesting winter sea temperatures of 10 degrees C (modern 4 degrees C). However, estimates from Pliocene bivalves (3.6-16.6 degrees C) are similar to or cooler than the present day. This 'mixed' signal is problematic given warmer seas in the Carolinas-Virginia, and climate model and oceanographic data that show warmer seas in the 'Mid-Pliocene' eastern North Atlantic. This may be because the Coralline Crag Formation was deposited prior to peak Mid-Pliocene warmth. 相似文献

In systems of interacting entities such as social networks, interactions that occur regularly typically correspond to significant,
yet often infrequent and hard to detect, interaction patterns. To identify such regular behavior in streams of dynamic interaction
data, we propose a new mining problem of finding a minimal set of periodically recurring subgraphs to capture all periodic
behavior in a dynamic network. We analyze the computational complexity of the problem and show that it is polynomial, unlike
many related subgraph or itemset mining problems. We propose an efficient and scalable algorithm to mine all periodic subgraphs
in a dynamic network. The algorithm makes a single pass over the data and is also capable of accommodating imperfect periodicity.
We demonstrate the applicability of our approach on several real-world networks and extract interesting and insightful periodic
interaction patterns. We also show that periodic subgraphs can be an effective way to uncover and characterize the natural

Iron is essential for the pathogenicity and virulence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which synthesises salicyl-capped siderophores (mycobactins) to acquire this element from the host. MbtA is the adenylating enzyme that catalyses the initial reaction of mycobactin biosynthesis and is solely expressed by mycobacteria. A 3200-member library comprised of lead-like, structurally diverse compounds was screened against M. tuberculosis for whole-cell inhibitory activity. A set of 846 compounds that inhibited the tubercle bacilli growth were then tested for their ability to bind to MbtA using a fluorescence-based thermal shift assay and NMR-based Water-LOGSY and saturation transfer difference (STD) experiments. We identified an attractive hit molecule, 5-hydroxyindol-3-ethylamino-(2-nitro-4-trifluoromethyl)benzene ( 5 ), that bound with high affinity to MbtA and produced a MIC90 value of 13 μm . The ligand was docked into the MbtA crystal structure and displayed an excellent fit within the MbtA active pocket, adopting a binding mode different from that of the established MbtA inhibitor Sal-AMS. 相似文献

Concern over stratospheric ozone depletion has prompted several government agencies in North America to establish networks of spectroradiometers for monitoring solar ultraviolet irradiance at the surface of the Earth. To assess the ability of spectroradiometers to accurately measure solar ultraviolet irradiance, and to compare the results between instruments of different monitoring networks, the second North American Intercomparison of Ultraviolet Monitoring Spectroradiometers was held June 12 to 23, 1995 at Table Mountain outside Boulder, Colorado, USA. This Intercomparison was coordinated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Participating agencies were the Environmental Protection Agency; the National Science Foundation; the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center; the Department of Agriculture; and the Atmospheric Environment Service, Canada. Instruments were characterized for wavelength uncertainty, bandwidth, stray-light rejection, and spectral irradiance responsivity, the latter with a NIST standard lamp operating in a specially designed field calibration unit. The spectral irradiance responsivity, determined once indoors and twice outdoors, demonstrated that while the responsivities changed upon moving the instruments, they were relatively stable when the instruments remained outdoors. Synchronized spectral scans of the solar irradiance were performed over several days. Using the spectral irradiance responsivities determined with the NIST standard lamp and three different convolution functions to account for the different bandwidths of the instruments, the measured solar irradiances generally agreed to within 3 %. 相似文献

Experimental studies of particle formation from solution droplets were conducted using a newly developed monodisperse spray drying process. Solutes beclomethasone dipropionate and caffeine were dissolved in ethanol, pressurized hydrofluoroalkane propellant 134a, and mixtures thereof. Solutions were atomized into monodisperse microdroplets using a custom droplet generator installed in a laboratory scale spray dryer, enabling drying and collection of the resulting monodisperse microparticles. The effects of droplet diameter, solution concentration, solvent composition, and drying rate on the physical properties of the dried particles were evaluated. Particle morphology and size were assessed using ultramicroscopy and image analysis of micrographs. Extent of crystallinity and polymorphism were investigated using Raman spectroscopy. The drying temperature was found to have a large effect on the morphology of amorphous beclomethasone dipropionate particles. Particles dried near room temperature were spheroidal to ellipsoidal with prevalent surface concavities and evidence of shell buckling; increasing the drying temperature for fixed droplet size and composition resulted in a transition to more spherical, smooth-surfaced particle morphologies. Crystalline caffeine microparticles were made up of assemblies of multiple crystallites. The measured length and breadth of these crystallites was found to be correlated with the time available for crystal nucleation and growth as calculated using a particle formation model. The results highlight the abilities and limitations of currently available particle formation models in elucidating the relationships between the size, composition, and evaporation rate of drying solution droplets and the physical properties of the resulting particles. The work demonstrates the suitability of monodisperse spray drying as an experimental technique for investigating the fundamentals of particle formation from solution droplets.

Maintaining enrollments in information systems programs capable of meeting industry demands is an ongoing challenge. While significant research has been conducted examining macro-level strategies (e.g., promoting MIS activities), very few studies have examined micro- level strategies (e.g., promoting Structured Query Language). The purpose of this study is to empirically examine both curriculum-oriented and promotional interventions by introducing SQL into foundation information systems curricula. Based on the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), 180 students completed a survey to measure attitude, behavior norms, and plans to enroll in a database class in the future. Additionally, both the hands-on SQL instruction and the promotional SQL intervention played a moderating role on the impact attitude had on plans to take a database course. These results add to our pedagogical understanding of enrollment decisions as well as provide practical solutions educators may use to keep pace with enrollment demands. 相似文献
