A variety of morphological types of dentate gyrus/hilus interneurons have been described, but little is known about their corresponding physiological characteristics. To address this issue, intracellular responses to current injection and perforant path stimulation were obtained from putative dentate interneurons in anaesthetized adult gerbils. Our sample of interneurons showed heterogeneity in their intrinsic physiological characteristics and spike thresholds to perforant path stimulation, suggesting the existence of distinct physiologically-defined classes. 'Fast-spiking' interneurons had a low threshold to perforant path stimulation, whereas 'slow-spiking' interneurons responded with predominantly inhibitory potentials. In several cases, cells were intracellularly labelled with biocytin for visualization. Interneurons with different physiological traits had distinct morphological features. These results confirm that, as in hippocampus proper, morphologically identifiable interneurons in the dentate hilus show electrophysiological features that are likely to reflect functionally specific roles in informational processing.  相似文献

Quality of frozen cucumber can significantly be improved by means of osmotic dehydration as a pre-freezing treatment. The objective of this work was to study the effect of osmotic pre-treatment with alternative osmotic solutes – oligofructose and a high DE maltodextrin – on the quality and functional properties of frozen cucumber tissue. Colour, texture and sensory characteristics of pre-treated and conventionally frozen samples were comparatively measured at 3 months time, during storage at four different temperatures, − 5, − 8, − 12, − 15 °C. Colour change was kinetically studied, and its temperature dependence was modelled by the Arrhenius equation. Dehydrofrozen samples exhibited significantly improved stability, with the rates of colour change being reduced up to 36.7% for osmotically pre-treated cucumbers, compared to the untreated samples. The results indicate that osmodehydrofrozen compared to conventionally frozen sliced cucumbers show improved firmness for prolonged storage period. Sensory evaluation also showed good organoleptic quality in osmodehydrofrozen cucumber slices.

Industrial relevance

The poor quality of frozen cucumber can significantly be improved by means of the cryoprotection accomplished by a pre-freezing osmotic dehydration step. Osmotic dehydration at mild temperatures can preserve product texture, and enhance flavour and other sensory properties (colour). In this paper, the effect of osmotic pre-treatment on the quality and shelf life of frozen cucumber tissue was investigated. The aim was to develop a method of processing cucumber that maintains palatable product while optimizing quality at the beginning and during frozen storage.  相似文献

HLA and gene frequencies are presented for a Polynesian population-the Western Samoans. Within the HLA-A locus A2, A9 and A11 have the highest frequencies and account for 55% of the alleles in this locus. The alleles BW22 and BW40 had the highest frequencies in the HLA-B locus and accounted for 51% of the alleles. The blank gene frequencies for the HLA-A and B loci are .382 and .373 respectively. Significant linkage disequilibrium was found with the haplotypes A1,B7; A3,B7;A2, BW40; A9, BW40 A9, BW22. The most frequent haplotype was A2,BW40. Comparatively low values within this population and between this and other Polynesian populations are discussed in terms of selection, migration and drift.  相似文献

Dairy animals, ranging from days 8 to 13 of the estrous cycle, were fitted with indwelling jugular catheters 1 day prior to either intramuscular injection of prostaglandin F2alpha free acid (30 mg, n=4) or intrauterine deposition of prostaglandin F2alpha free acid (10 mg, n = 3). Blood samples were collected at 6, 4, 2, and 0 h prior to administration of prostaglandin F2alpha and at 1, 3, and every 2 h thereafter until ovulation. Progestins, estradiol, and luteinizing hormone in plasma were measured by radioimmunoassay. Hormonal changes and interrelationships within animals were evaluated by least squares analyses. Decreases in progestins of plasma within 24 h indicated prostaglandin F2alpha induced luteolysis in six of the seven animals. Estradiol increased linearly from time of injection to 52 h postinjection. Intervals from administration of prostaglandin to onset of estrus, peak of luteinizing hormone, and ovulation were 74.9 +/- 21, 78.8 +/- 21, and 99.5 +/- 19 h.  相似文献

Eight out of 115 infants admitted to hospital with respiratory syncytial (RS) virus infection had been breast-fed compared with 46 out of 167 controls; this difference was statistically significant. Twenty-one specimens of human colostrum were examined, and all contained RS virus neutralising activity. Specific IgA and IgG were detected in 18 specimens, whereas IgM was detected in none. The titre of IgA antibody was usually higher and correlated more closely to the titre of neutralising activity than that of IgG. Infants inhale milk feeds and regurgitate them through the nose, and the IgA collecting in the respiratory tract might protect against severe respiratory infection. Alternatively, if severe RS virus illness is a sign of hypersensitivity to the virus breast-feeding might protect the infant from an early sensitising infection.  相似文献

Ergonovine maleate (EM) is a powerful stimulant of human tubal motility. It has been therefore thought that EM could interfere with normal ovum transport and serve as a contraceptive. The tube activating effects of EM and methyl EM were evaluated in 14 women and results confirmed that both are powerful stimulants of the human Fallopian tube. The principles of a novel chill chain management policy, coded Safety Monitoring and Assurance System (SMAS) for the optimisation of the distribution of chilled food products within the chill chain are developed. In this system, a new approach based on actual risk evaluation at important points of the chill chain is used in order to promote products to the next stage of distribution. This evaluation based on product's time–temperature history, variation in product's characteristics (e.g. aw, pH, etc.), and the use of predictive models for the growth of food pathogens, allows to give priority to products in such a way that risk at consumption time is minimized. The effectiveness of SMAS was evaluated against the First In First Out (FIFO) approach, the current method for food distribution, in a case study on the risk of listeriosis of cooked ham using the Monte Carlo simulation technique. Furthermore, the two approaches were compared for their effect on the quality of the products in terms of remaining shelf life at the time of consumption. The results showed that following the SMAS approach the risk of listerisosis is significantly lower while the spoiled products at the time of consumption are significantly reduced compared to FIFO approach.  相似文献

Tomatoes are perishable products due to the activity of microorganisms and endogenous enzymes. The objective was to produce cut tomatoes with extended shelf life, using the combined hurdle effect of osmotic pretreatment (OD) and high pressure (HP), instead of a conventional one‐step thermal process. Samples were processed in a multicomponent osmotic solution at 35 °C, subsequently cold‐pasteurised in pack at 600 MPa and stored at 5–15 °C. Quality deterioration during isothermal and nonisothermal storage was kinetically modelled. Both OD process and OD‐HP combined process caused an increase in lycopene content that was well retained. Texture, colour and flavour of treated samples were evaluated as similar to fresh, with OD‐HP samples showing better retention during storage. Being microbiologically stable, shelf life of OD‐HP samples was limited by sensory deterioration, whereas OD samples were rejected due to eventual microbial growth. Shelf life of OD and OD‐HP samples was estimated at 77 and 181 days, respectively, at 5 °C.  相似文献
