Noble Metal Ion-Directed Assembly of 2D Materials for Heterostructured Catalysts and Metallic Micro-Texturing

Assembling 2D-material (2DM) nanosheets into micro- and macro-architectures with augmented functionalities requires effective strategies to overcome nanosheet restacking. Conventional assembly approaches involve external binders and/or functionalization, which inevitably sacrifice 2DM's nanoscale properties. Noble metal ions (NMI) are promising ionic crosslinkers, which can simultaneously assemble 2DM nanosheets and induce synergistic properties. Herein, a collection of NMI–2DM complexes are screened and categorized into two sub-groups. Based on the zeta potentials, two assembly approaches are developed to obtain 1) NMI-crosslinked 2DM hydrogels/aerogels for heterostructured catalysts and 2) NMI–2DM inks for templated synthesis. First, tetraammineplatinum(II) nitrate (TPtN) serves as an efficient ionic crosslinker to agglomerate various 2DM dispersions. By utilizing micro-textured assembly platforms, various TPtN–2DM hydrogels are fabricated in a scalable fashion. Afterward, these hydrogels are lyophilized and thermally reduced to synthesize Pt-decorated 2DM aerogels (Pt@2DM). The Pt@2DM heterostructures demonstrate high, substrate-dependent catalytic activities and promote different reaction pathways in the hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene. Second, PtCl₄ can be incorporated into 2DM dispersions at high NMI molarities to prepare a series of PtCl₄–2DM inks with high colloidal stability. By adopting the PtCl₄–graphene oxide ink, various Pt micro-structures with replicated topographies are synthesized with accurate control of grain sizes and porosities.     

Nightingallery: theatrical framing and orchestration in participatory performance

The Nightingallery project encouraged participants to converse, sing, and perform with a musically responsive animatronic bird, playfully interacting with the character while members of the public could look on and observe. We used Nightingallery to frame an HCI investigation into how people would engage with one another when confronted with unfamiliar technologies in conspicuously public, social spaces. Structuring performances as improvisational street theatre, we styled our method of exhibiting the bird character. We cast ourselves in supporting roles as carnival barkers and minders of the bird, presenting him as if he were a fantastical creature in a fairground sideshow display, allowing him the agency to shape and maintain dialogues with participants, and positioning him as the focal character upon which the encounter was centred. We explored how the anthropomorphic nature of the bird itself, along with the cultural connotations associated with the carnival/sideshow tradition helped signpost and entice participants through the trajectory of their encounters with the exhibit. Situating ourselves as secondary characters within the narrative defining the performance/use context, our methods of mediation, observation, and evaluation were integrated into the performance frame. In this paper, we explore recent HCI theories in mixed reality performance to reflect upon how genre-based cultural connotations can be used to frame trajectories of experience, and how manipulation of roles and agency in participatory performance can facilitate HCI investigation of social encounters with playful technologies.     

Dynamics of Local Bond Correlations in FeSe x Te1−x by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

The dynamics of the local atomic pair correlations in the FeSe _x Te_1?x ( x = 0.1, 0.5, and 0.9) system were investigated using the dynamic pair density function analysis obtained from inelastic neutron scattering. Distinct differences are observed between the superconducting and nonsuperconducting compositions, particularly involving the local dynamics of the Fe-Fe correlations. The energy scale of the observed differences is between 25 and 30 meV. In the nonsuperconducting FeSe_0.1Te_0.9, the Fe-Fe correlations are enhanced with cooling that may signal stronger exchange interactions, while in the superconducting compositions of FeSe_0.9Te_0.1 and FeSe_0.5Te_0.5, they are suppressed.     

Delayed self-regulation and time-dependent chemical drive leads to novel states in epigenetic landscapes

The epigenetic pathway of a cell as it differentiates from a stem cell state to a mature lineage-committed one has been historically understood in terms of Waddington''s landscape, consisting of hills and valleys. The smooth top and valley-strewn bottom of the hill represent their undifferentiated and differentiated states, respectively. Although mathematical ideas rooted in nonlinear dynamics and bifurcation theory have been used to quantify this picture, the importance of time delays arising from multistep chemical reactions or cellular shape transformations have been ignored so far. We argue that this feature is crucial in understanding cell differentiation and explore the role of time delay in a model of a single-gene regulatory circuit. We show that the interplay of time-dependent drive and delay introduces a new regime where the system shows sustained oscillations between the two admissible steady states. We interpret these results in the light of recent perplexing experiments on inducing the pluripotent state in mouse somatic cells. We also comment on how such an oscillatory state can provide a framework for understanding more general feedback circuits in cell development.     

Recurrent hypernatremia; a proposed mechanism in a patient with absence of thirst and abnormal excretion of water

A 7-year-old girl twice developed severe hypernatremia (serum sodium values up to 194 mEq/l) without obvious cause. The ability of her kidneys to conserve water was normal, and increasing her plasma osmolality stimulated an appropriate ADH response. Unable to excrete a water load, her kidneys continued to conserve water even with a serum sodium concentration of 133 mEq/l. She was never thirsty and did not ingest sufficient fluid by choice. Although there was no demonstrable anatomic lesion, we postulate a localized defect of her thirst center. This may have modified release of ADH and resulted in an inability to dilute the urine by interrupting a pathway that could exist from the thirst center to the supraoptic nuclei. A therapeutic regimen based on these studies has prevented further hypernatremia.     

Territorial cognition: Assessing Altman's typology.

The empirical validity of I. Altman's (1975) typology of human territories was assessed using a modified Role Construct Repertory Grid. Urban and suburban Ss, matched on several variables, were interviewed in their homes. It was expected that suburban Ss, as compared to urban Ss, would perceive more control over secondary and public territories. Results confirm the validity of Altman's typology and the importance of the dimensions of centrality and temporal duration. The expected urban vs suburban differences were obtained. Results also indicate that primary and secondary territories, by providing the setting for interaction at varying levels of formality and exclusion, possessed role-structuring properties. Future research on human territoriality should take a multimethod approach and explore the covariation of territorial cognitions and behaviors. Clinical experience using a small-gauge needle for arterial puncture

The present study was undertaken to ascertain the feasibility of using a 25-gauge needle for arterial punctures. A total of 11,500 arterial punctures were performed over the past four years by this technique without any major complication. Repeated arterial punctures were well tolerated by all patients, and the necessity for indwelling arterial catheters was almost totally eliminated during this period of study.
