A nine-aperture, wide-field Fizeau imaging telescope has been built at the Lockheed-Martin Advanced Technology Center. The telescope consists of nine, 125 mm diameter collector telescopes coherently phased and combined to form a diffraction-limited image with a resolution that is consistent with the 610 mm diameter of the telescope. The phased field of view of the array is 1 murad. The measured rms wavefront error is 0.08 waves rms at 635 nm. The telescope is actively controlled to correct for tilt and phasing errors. The control sensing technique is the method known as phase diversity, which extracts wavefront information from a pair of focused and defocused images. The equipment and methods used to produce wide-angle antireflection coatings based on Reststrahlen materials are described. The optical constants of the coating materials used in the construction of the multilayers were determined by spectrophotometric ellipsometry and are compared with the literature values. The measured performance of an experimentally produced antireflection coating is compared with the expected calculated performance. The reflectance is low over a wide range of angles, but only in the narrow-wavelength region at which the refractive index of the Reststrahlen material is close to unity. 相似文献

Tokyo and its outlying cities are home to one-quarter of Japan's 127 million people. Highly destructive earthquakes struck the capital in 1703, 1855 and 1923, the last of which took 105,000 lives. Fuelled by greater Tokyo's rich seismological record, but challenged by its magnificent complexity, our joint Japanese-US group carried out a new study of the capital's earthquake hazards. We used the prehistoric record of great earthquakes preserved by uplifted marine terraces and tsunami deposits (17 M approximately 8 shocks in the past 7000 years), a newly digitized dataset of historical shaking (10000 observations in the past 400 years), the dense modern seismic network (300,000 earthquakes in the past 30 years), and Japan's GeoNet array (150 GPS vectors in the past 10 years) to reinterpret the tectonic structure, identify active faults and their slip rates and estimate their earthquake frequency. We propose that a dislodged fragment of the Pacific plate is jammed between the Pacific, Philippine Sea and Eurasian plates beneath the Kanto plain on which Tokyo sits. We suggest that the Kanto fragment controls much of Tokyo's seismic behaviour for large earthquakes, including the damaging 1855 M approximately 7.3 Ansei-Edo shock. On the basis of the frequency of earthquakes beneath greater Tokyo, events with magnitude and location similar to the M approximately 7.3 Ansei-Edo event have a ca 20% likelihood in an average 30 year period. In contrast, our renewal (time-dependent) probability for the great M > or = 7.9 plate boundary shocks such as struck in 1923 and 1703 is 0.5% for the next 30 years, with a time-averaged 30 year probability of ca 10%. The resulting net likelihood for severe shaking (ca 0.9 g peak ground acceleration (PGA)) in Tokyo, Kawasaki and Yokohama for the next 30 years is ca 30%. The long historical record in Kanto also affords a rare opportunity to calculate the probability of shaking in an alternative manner exclusively from intensity observations. This approach permits robust estimates for the spatial distribution of expected shaking, even for sites with few observations. The resulting probability of severe shaking is ca 35% in Tokyo, Kawasaki and Yokohama and ca 10% in Chiba for an average 30 year period, in good agreement with our independent estimate, and thus bolstering our view that Tokyo's hazard looms large. Given 1 trillion US dollars estimates for the cost of an M approximately 7.3 shock beneath Tokyo, our probability implies a 13 billion US dollars annual probable loss. 相似文献

Nanosized inorganic particles are of great interest because their electronic properties can be easily tailored, providing a tremendous potential for applications in optoelectronic devices, light-emitting diodes, solar cells and hydrogen storage. Confinement of electrons and holes to dimensions comparable to their wavelength leads to quantum-well states with modified wavefunctions and density of states. Surface phenomena are crucial in determining nanoparticle properties in view of their large surface-to-volume ratio. Despite a wealth of information, many fundamental questions about the nature of the surface and its relationship with the electronic structure remain unsolved. Ab initio calculations on CdSe nanocrystals suggest that passivating the ligands does not produce the ideal wurtzite structure and that Se atoms relax outwards irrespective of passivation. Here we show that implanted positrons are trapped at the surface of CdSe nanocrystals. They annihilate mostly with the Se electrons, monitor changes in composition and structure of the surface while hardly sensing the ligand molecules, and we thus unambiguously confirm the predicted strong surface relaxation. 相似文献

Activated carbon injection is considered one of the most cost-effective options for mercury control at PRB-fired power plants. However, roughly 30% of sites firing PRB coal use SO3 for flue gas conditioning. The presence of SO3 in flue gas can decrease mercury capture by activated carbon, sometimes dramatically. Overcoming activated carbon performance limitations caused by SO3 conditioning for units with this configuration is essential to enable these plants to cost-effectively meet pending mercury emission regulations. Ameren's Labadie Unit 2 fires PRB coal and uses SO3 to enhance particulate capture in the electrostatic precipitator (ESP). Full-scale sorbent injection tests at Labadie were conducted from 2005–2007. Six sorbents were tested at SO3 injection concentrations ranging from 0 to 10.7 ppm. Sorbent performance was evaluated at two injection locations (the air preheater (APH) inlet and outlet). Native mercury capture on fly ash was typically less than 15%. When the mercury sorbents were injected downstream of the air preheater, the SO3 concentration resulted in a decrease in mercury capture from 85% (no SO3 injection) to 17% (SO3 injection set at 10.7 ppm). Mercury sorbents were more effective when injected upstream of the air preheater. With the SO3 system off, mercury removal increased from 75% when injecting 5.1 lb/MMacf of brominated carbon at the APH outlet, compared to 95% when injecting at the inlet. With the SO3 system on, test results indicated an increase from about 30% injecting at the outlet to 58% injecting at the inlet. Tests evaluating the ADA-ES patented onsite milling process showed that 85% mercury capture was achieved injecting 4 lb/MMacf of milled activated carbon compared to a requirement of 10 lb/MMacf to achieve the same removal using as-received carbon, representing a 60% reduction in activated carbon consumption. No changes in opacity, APH and ESP performance, or other balance-of-plant effects were observed in these tests. 相似文献

Biological removal of 17α-ethinylestradiol by a nitrifier enrichment culture in a membrane bioreactor 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Increasing concern about the fate of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) in the environment stimulates the search for alternative methods for wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent polishing. The aim of this study was to establish an innovative and effective biological removal technique for EE2 by means of a nitrifier enrichment culture (NEC) applied in a membrane bioreactor (MBR). In batch incubation tests, the microbial consortium was able to remove EE2 from both a synthetic minimal medium and WWTP effluent. A maximum EE2 removal rate of 9.0 μg EE2 g−1 biomass-VSS h−1 was achieved (>94% removal efficiency). Incubation of the heterotrophic bacteria isolated from the NEC did not result in a significant EE2 removal, indicating the importance of nitrification as driving force in the mechanism. Application of the NEC in a MBR to treat a synthetic influent with an EE2 concentration of 83 ng EE2 L−1 resulted in a removal efficiency of 99% (loading rates up to 208 ng EE2 L−1 d−1; membrane flux rate: 6.9 L m−2 h−1). Simultaneously, complete nitrification was achieved at an optimal ammonium influent concentration of 1.0 mg NH4+-N L−1. This minimal NH4+-N input is very advantageous for effluent polishing since the concomitant effluent nitrate concentrations will be low as well and it offers opportunities for the nitrifying MBR as a promising add-on technology for WWTP effluent polishing. 相似文献

The traditional 5-day test of the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5 test) has many disadvantages, and principally it is unsuitable for process control and real-time monitoring. As an alternative, a single-chamber microbial fuel cell (SCMFC) with an air cathode was tested as a biosensor and the performance analysed in terms of its measurement range, its response time, its reproducibility and its operational stability. When artificial wastewater was used as fuel, the biosensor output had a linear relationship with the BOD concentration up to 350 mg BOD cm−3; very high reproducibility; and stability over 7 months of operation.The system was further improved by reducing by 75% the total anolyte volume. In this way a response time close to the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of the biosensor (i.e. 40 min) was reached. When the small volume SCMFC biosensor was fed with real wastewater a good correlation between COD concentration and current output was obtained, demonstrating the applicability of this system to real effluents. Inorganic arsenic (arsenate and arsenite) are well known human carcinogens. Apoptosis is a normal biological process that is involved in regulating cell development and differentiation, and is an important protective response to cell injury. The aim of this study was to determine the long term arsenic effect on human small airway epithelial cells (SAEC) by analyzing two distinct apoptosis-inducing agents, Fas ligand (Fas L), which evokes death receptor-mediated apoptosis, and hydrogen peroxide H2O2, which induces apoptosis mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The SAEC were continuously exposed to 0.5 µg/mL arsenic for 28 weeks, and apoptosis was examined after 24 h treatment with either Fas L or H2O2. SAEC displayed decreased cell viability and increased apoptosis after treatment with Fas L and H2O2, compared to non-arsenic treated control cells. Furthermore, treatment of these arsenic-exposed SAEC with Fas L or H2O2 induced cleavage of the DNA damage recognition protein, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), and the ‘effector’ caspase, Caspase-3, both canonical indicators of apoptosis. We observed increased phosphorylation of p38, a member of the MAP kinase family, following treatment with Fas L or H2O2. To confirm the involvement of p38 in the regulation of apoptosis we pretreated cells with the p38 kinase inhibitor, SB 203580 and observed a significant decrease in apoptosis. 相似文献

Deformation behaviour and crack initalisation of clay liner related to landfills – due to cyclic hydraulic and mechanic actions. Settlement and swell/shrink behaviour of clay liner under influence of environment are major topics of many research studies focussing expansive soil behaviour related to landfill applications. Depending on magnitude of surcharge pressure acting on the liner and wetting‐drying behaviour of the soil, settlement, together with swelling and shrinkage, may result in cracks or contrastly may close initial cracks induced by mechanical compaction in the field. In this paper, an analysis of the effects of field swelling and shrinkage of a compacted polymer‐enhanced bentonite‐sand mixture is presented. The analysis performed was based on field suction measurement data.
