Roller blading is a new and increasingly popular leisure activity in many countries. We reviewed 110 consecutive patients with roller-blade injuries between 1 January and 30 June 1996. The patients ranged from 4 to 14 years in age (mean 6.5 years). Eighty-three (75.4%) sustained injuries to the upper limb and 27 (24.5%) injured the lower limb. Fifty-six patients, were girls and 54 were boys. Of the 110 patients, 79 (72.7%) sustained fractures, 28 (25.4%) soft tissue injuries and 3 (2.7%) dislocations. Eighty-three (75.4%) of the patients wore no protective equipment on the limbs. Four months following injury 103 (93.6%) patients were fully recovered. The mean duration of school absence was 3 days. Subsequently 101 children returned to using roller-blades following injury. Seventy-three (66.3%) of these now use protective equipment. We found that injuries were unrelated to age or duration of roller-blading experience or to the brand-name of roller blades used, and that most of our patients wore no protective equipment at the time of injury. 相似文献

Chinese hamster lung fibroblast V79 cells have been widely used in studies of DNA damage and DNA repair. Since the p53 gene is involved in normal responses to DNA damage, we have analyzed the molecular genetics and functional status of p53 in V79 cells and primary Chinese hamster embryonic fibroblast (CHEF) cells. The coding product of the p53 gene in CHEF cells was 76 and 75% homologous to human and mouse p53 respectively, and was 95% homologous to the Syrian hamster cells. The V79 p53 sequence contained two point mutations located within a presumed DNA binding domain, as compared with the CHEF cells. Additional immunocytochemical and molecular studies confirmed that the p53 protein in V79 cells was mutated and nonfunctional. Our results indicate that caution should be used in interpreting studies of DNA damage, DNA repair and apoptosis in V79 cells. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The establishment of the nasopharyngeal flora was followed in Costa Rican children from birth to 1 year of age. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal cultures were obtained at 1 (n = 413), 3 (n = 393), 6 (n = 376) and 12 months (n = 356) of age from children representative of the population in the Puriscal district. Weekly cultures were obtained from a subcohort of these children (n = 101). Mother-infant diads (n = 95) and preschool children (n = 208) attending day-care centers were also studied. RESULTS: The estimated proportion of colonized children in the population differed markedly depending on the frequency of culture. Quarterly cultures showed a slow increase in carrier rates from 3.9% for Haemophilus influenzae, 3.1% for Streptococcus pneumoniae and 6.5% for Moraxella catarrhalis at 1 month of age to 10.1% carrying H. influenzae and 19.4% carrying S. pneumoniae by the end of the first year. By quarterly culture the proportion of children colonized at least once was 36% for S. pneumoniae, 26% for H. influenzae and 28% for M. catarrhalis. In contrast weekly sampling showed that 95 to 100% of the children were colonized at least once during the first year of life with H. influenzae, S. pneumoniae or M. catarrhalis. Nasopharyngeal carriage of H. influenzae, S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis was low in the mothers, and very few mother-infant pairs carried identical bacteria at the same time. In contrast carrier rates were high in the siblings attending day care (H. influenzae 27.9%, S. pneumoniae 39.4%, both organisms 26.6%). Infants with siblings had significantly higher bacterial carriage at all ages than infants without siblings. CONCLUSIONS: Quarterly nasopharyngeal cultures showed that Costa Rican infants acquire their nasopharyngeal flora at a rate comparable with that for infants in developed countries and that siblings are an important source of the bacteria. Escherichia coli K4 bacteria synthesize a capsule polysaccharide (GalNAc-GlcA(fructose))n with the carbohydrate backbone identical to chondroitin. GlcA- and GalNAc-transferase activities from the bacterial membrane were assayed with acceptors derived from the capsule polysaccharide and radiolabeled UDP-[14C]GlcA and UDP-[3H]GalNAc, respectively. It was shown that defructosylated oligosaccharides (chondroitin) could serve as substrates for both the GlcA- and the GalNAc-transferases. The radiolabeled products were completely degraded with chondroitinase AC; the [14C]GlcA unit could be removed by beta-D-glucuronidase, and the [3H]GalNAc could be removed by beta-N-acetylhexosaminidase. A fructosylated oligosaccharide acceptor tested for GlcA-transferase activity was found to be inactive. These results indicate that the chain elongation reaction of the K4 polysaccharide proceeds in the same way as the polymerization of the chondroitin chain, by the addition of the monosaccharide units one by one to the nonreducing end of the polymer. This makes the biosynthesis of the K4 polysaccharide an interesting parallel system for studies of chondroitin sulfate biosynthesis. In the biosynthesis of capsule polysaccharides from E. coli, a similar mechanism has earlier been demonstrated for polysialic acid (NeuNAc)n (Rohr, T. E., and Troy, F. A. (1980) J. Biol. Chem. 255, 2332-2342) and for the K5 polysaccharide (GlcAbeta1-4GlcNAcalpha1-4)n (Lidholt, K., Fjelstad, M., Jann, K., and Lindahl, U. (1994) Carbohydr. Res. 255, 87-101). OBJECTIVES: To determine age-specific prevalence of hypertension and blood pressure (BP) levels in relation to diet and lifestyle factors in North Indians. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional survey in 20 randomly selected streets in Moradabad, North India. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 1806 subjects from North India (904 males and 902 females) age range 25-64 years. The survey methods were as follows: dietary diaries for 7 days food intake record; BP measurements; physician administered questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. Diagnosis of hypertension was based on new World Health Organization/International Society of Hypertension (WHO/ISH) criteria. Risk factors were assessed based on WHO guidelines. RESULTS: The prevalence of hypertension according to WHO/ISH criteria was 23.7% and by old WHO criteria 13.3%. In the WHO/ISH hypertensive group, isolated diastolic hypertension was present in 47.3% males and 40.6% females. Males have a slightly higher prevalence than females in the young age group, however, the prevalence rates are comparable in the older age groups. In both sexes, the prevalence rates and BP level increased with older age. Multivariate analysis revealed that age, higher body mass index, central obesity and higher socioeconomic status were independently and strongly associated with hypertension in both sexes. Higher dietary fat and salt intake and lower physical activity were weakly but significantly associated with hypertension. CONCLUSION: Association of higher socioeconmic status, higher body mass index and central obesity in North Indian adults with higher fat intake, lower physical activity and higher prevalence and level of hypertension indicate that these populations may benefit by decreasing the dietary fat intake and increasing physical activity, with an aim to decrease central obesity for decreasing hypertension in North Indians. 相似文献

The aim of study was the evaluation of periodontal pockets microflora in patients with advanced periodontitis. From each subject 16-20 samples were taken using paper points. Pooled sample after 60 s. mixing was serially diluted in reduced BHI. For total cell counts and for the isolation of black pigmented anaerobes Brucella agar supplemented with 5% sheep blood, hemin, menadione, with and without Kanamycin-Vancomycin mixture and BM agar plates were used. For isolation of A. actinomycetemcomitans TSBV agar plates were used. Cultures were incubated in anaerobic chamber at 37 degrees C for 7 days and TSBV agar plates in an atmosphere of 95% air-5% CO2 at 37 degrees C for 5 days. Microorganisms were identified by Gram staining, colony morphology, fluorescence in UV-light, haemagglutination of 3% sheep erythrocytes, fermentation of sugars, production of indole, urease (API 20A), specific enzymes (Rapid ID 32A). Twenty seven subjects with clinically recognized periodontitis were examined. Microorganisms important in periodontitis were isolated from periodontal pockets of almost all examined subjects. The number of bacteria obtained from the sample of one patient ranged from 1 x 10(4) CFU/ml to 3,6 x 10(6) CFU/ml. A transformational approach for proving termination of parallel logic programs such as GHC programs is proposed. A transformation
from GHC programs to term rewriting systems is developed; it exploits the fact that unifications in GHC-resolution correspond
to matchings. The termination of a GHC program for a class of queries is implied by the termination of the resulting rewrite
system. This approach facilitates the applicability of a wide range of termination techniques developed for rewrite systems
in proving termination of GHC programs. The method consists of three steps: (a) deriving moding information from a given GHC
program, (b) transforming the GHC program into a term rewriting system using the moding information, and finally (c) proving
termination of the resulting rewrite system. Using this method, the termination of many benchmark GHC programs such as quick-sort,
merge-sort, merge, split, fair-split and append, etc., can be proved.

Deepak Kapur, Ph.D.: He currently works as a professor at the State University of New York at Albany. His research interests are in the areas
of automated reasoning, term rewriting, constraint solving, algebraic and geometric reasoning and its applications in computer
vision, symbolic computation, formal methods, specification and verification. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from
MIT in 1980. He worked at General Electric Corporate Research and Development until 1987. Prof. Kapur is the editor-in-chief
of the Journal of Automated Reasoning. He also serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Logic Programming, Journal on
Constraints, and Journal of Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computer Science.
R. K. Shyamasundar, Ph.D.: He currently works as a professor at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bombay. His current intersts are in
the areas of logic programming, reactive and real time programming, constraint solving, formal methods, specification and
verification. He received his Ph.D in computer science from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1975 and has been a
faculty member at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research since then. He has been a visiting/regular faculty member at Technological
University of Eindhoven, University of Utrecht, IBM TJ Watson Research Centre, Pennsylvania State University, University of

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate two methods of assessing the productivity and quality impact of Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) and Fourth Generation Language (4GL) technologies: (1) by the retrospective method; and (2) the cross-sectional method. Both methods involve the use of questionnaire surveys. Developers' perceptions depend on the context in which they are expressed and this includes expectations about the effectiveness of a given software product. Consequently, it is generally not reliable to base inferences about the relative merits of CASE and 4GLs on a cross-sectional comparison of two separate samples of users. The retrospective method that requires each respondent to directly compare different products is shown to be more reliable. However, there may be scope to employ cross-sectional comparisons of the findings from different samples where both sets of respondents use the same reference point for their judgements, and where numerical rather than verbal rating scales are used to measure perceptions. 相似文献
