In vitro cytotoxicity of melanoidins isolated from cooked meat and fish samples

A study has been undertaken to investigate the biological activity of melanoidins isolated from meat samples baked according to Kuntscheva (electro-baking oven, 200-300 degrees C, 60-210 min) and from semi-finished meat products baked in swimming fat (200 degrees C, 3 X 50 min, repeated use of the oil) as well as from semi-finished fish products (190 degrees C, 60 min). A weak toxicity of the melanoidins formed within a longer thermal treatment, but no mutagenic effect was stated. The cytotoxic alterations showed no specific character.     

Determining the fracture toughness of metals and alloys under conditions of similarity of local failure

Conclusions The proposed criteria of similarity of local failure make it possible to compare under similar conditions the behavior of metals and alloys at the moment of occurrence of plastic instability at the apex of a crack (defect). It was established that the critical size of the zone of plastic deformation at a defect (crack) with the exceeding of which under the given loading conditions plastic instability occurs is determined by the ratio of the yield strengths of the given material in shear and in tension and depends upon the mechanism of plastic deformation realized at the moment of occurrence of plastic instability.With the use of the criteria of similarity of the constriction of plastic deformation it is fundamentally possible to convert the critical parameters controlling the occurrence of plastic instability at the apex of a crack (defect) under various loading conditions.The results obtained require further analysis and experimental confirmation.Translated from Fiziko-Khimicheskaya Mekhanika Materialov, Vol. 13, No. 5, pp. 31–45, September–October, 1977.     

Electrophoretic characteristics of the proteins and the preparative production of neuraminidase from the A/turkey/Wisconsin/66 (Hav6N2) strain of the avian influenza virus]

An epidemiological study was conducted of geographic differences in stroke mortality between the following areas within the United States; Savannah, Georgia (high stroke rates), Hagerstown, Maryland (intermediate stroke rates) and Pueblo, Colorado (low stroke rates). Population samples 35--54 years of age of the three cities were drawn for interview and examination to determine medical conditions and living habits of these populations. The population samples were compared with emphasis on possible risk factors for stroke: serum cholesterol and glucose tolerance test determinations, weight and height measurements, blood pressure and cigarette smoking. The gradient of increasing prevalence of stroke-related risk factors from low to intermediate to high for the three cities was present for blood pressure in black females and white males and for glucose tolerance tests in whites and nonwhites. No other consistent pattern of increasing prevalence of risk factors for stroke was evident.     

Control of a nonstationary process of thermoelectric cooling by variation of the geometric shape of the branches of a thermoelement

Tests of a filter with a filtering layer of synthetic fibre waste

Conclusions A fibre filter ensures thorough clean-up of wastewater from viscose fibre manufacturing from suspended particles and dispersed sulfur.The high rate of filtration of the fibre filter (27 m/h), reduction in water consumption, and 30% reduction in time for washing the filter show that economy can be achieved by replacing the quartz filter with a fibre one in the scheme of wastewater clean-up.Translated from Khimicheskie Volokna, No. 5, pp. 49–50, September–October, 1983.
