Assessing the intellectual functioning of Spanish-speaking adults: Comparison of the EIWA and the WAIS.

We point out the significant limitations in adapting the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) to assess the intellectual-cognitive functioning of Spanish-speaking adults, and we seek to familiarize practitioners with the Spanish version of the WAIS, the Escala de Inteligencia Wechsler Para Adultos (EIWA). To do the latter, we systematically examined both the EIWA and the WAIS and identified the exact differences between the two tests in regard to administration, content, scoring, and standardization sample characteristics. The most significant difference was found in the conversion of raw scores to scale scores. On several subtests, the equivalent raw score was converted into very different WAIS and EIWA scale scores. Other significant differences were noted in the content of the tests and in the social demographic makeup of the standardization samples. The administration and assignment of scores for both tests were generally found to be similar. On the basis of these findings, we offer specific recommendations for the testing of Spanish-speaking adults and for further research in this neglected area of study. Interaction between polyvinylpyrrolidone and surfactant from viscosimetric data

The intrinsic viscosities of solutions of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in water-sodium dodecyl sulphate have been measured, for four different molecular weights of PVP, and different concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulphate at temperatures between 20 and 35°C. The exponent a of the Mark-Houwink-Sakurada equation has been determined, and the values of the short range interaction parameter K_θ, and expansion factor α_η derived. Above a certain concentration the sodium dodecyl sulphate is adsorbed on the polymer by means of hydrophobic attractions, and the consequent repulsion between anionic heads provokes expansion of the macromolecule.     

New representation for the current in a horizontal wire above ground

A new approximate formula is given for the current in a horizontal wire above ground. This formula, which is more accurate than previous ones, involves contributions from both proper and improper modes.     

Electrocatalytic oxidation of organic molecules in alkaline solutions—I. Oxidation of 1,3 dioxolane at platinum

The electroadsorption and electrooxidation of 1,3 dioxolane at platinum in 1 M KOH solutions were investigated under a wide range of experimental conditions. The potential of maximum adsorption (E^max_ad) is ca. 0.4 V and the degree of surface coverage depends linearly with the logarithm of organic concentration as predicted by a Temkin type adsorption isotherm. The kinetics of the electroadsorption process follows a Roginskii-Zel'dovich equation. From (eps)_ad, (eps)_ox and analysis of oxidation products a mechanism is postulated which consists of an adsorption with simultaneous dehydrogenation step followed by cycle rupture and electroadsorption and dehydrogenation of further residues.     

Functional and nutritional properties of isolated bovine blood proteins.

Various properties of freeze-dried fractions of bovine blood have been compared. Dried whole plasma, albumin, globulin and globin showed high solubility from pH 3 to 8, but this fell sharply with plasma on storage at 40°C and Aw 0.32 or higher. Albumin showed the best foaming properties followed by plasma, globulin and globin. These proteins in 1 % solution were able to emulsify 60, 115, 70 and 45% of their volume of oil, respectively. Net protein ratios were 3.57 for globulin, 1.96 for albumin and negative for globin. Chemical scores indicated that methionine was the most limiting amino acid for globulin and albumin. Isoleucine was limiting for globin.     

One-way acceptors and languages

In the present paper, a parallel presentation of the theories of abstract families of languages (AFL) and abstract families of deterministic languages (AFDL) is given. This is done by introducing two families of languages. One of them is the one-way nondeterministic family of languages (1NFL). A 1NFL is a family of languages closed under special marked substitution and inverse nondeterministic a-gsm mapping. The deterministic counterpart of 1NFL is 1DFL. It is shown that 1NFL and 1DFL are equivalent to AFL and AFDL, respectively. These families of languages are then used to characterize, side by side and with alternate proofs, the families of languages accepted by AFA and AFDA. Moreover, it is also shown that 1NFL and 1DFL can be used to characterize the families of languages accepted by a closed class of 1NBA and 1DBA, respectively.This work was supported in part by the University Research Council of Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio.
