Low threshold current GaAs/AlGaAs GRIN-SCH lasers grown bymolecular beam epitaxy on Si3N4 masked substrates

High-performance single-quantum-well graded-refractive index separate confinement heterostructure (SQW GRINSCH) laser have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Si₃N₄ patterned GaAs (100) substrates. Lasers grown on stripe windows orientated in the [011] direction have optical waveguiding and current confinement supplied by facetting occurring during growth. Lasers fabricated on 10 μm wide Si ₃N₄ openings have threshold currents as low as 15 mA for a 500 μm-long cavity. The current density required to reach optical transparency is 144 A/cm²; an internal quantum efficiency of 81%, and a peak optical power of 70 mW per facet has been obtained. Device performance comparable to ridge lasers is observed in a self-aligned laser process     

Defining the boundaries of "policy-relevant" research: A comment on Blight.

Lead suppresses chimeric human transferrin gene expression in transgenic mouse liver

The major iron-transport protein in serum is transferrin (TF) which also has the capacity to transport other metals. This report presents evidence that synthesis of human TF can be regulated by the metal lead. Transgenic mice carrying chimeric human TF-chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) genes received lead or sodium salts by intraperitoneal injections or in drinking water. Transgene expression in liver was suppressed 31 to 50% by the lead treatment. Lead regulates human TF transgenes at the mRNA level since liver CAT enzyme activity, CAT protein, and TF-CAT mRNA levels were all suppressed. The dosages of lead did not alter synthesis of the other liver proteins, mouse TF and albumin, as measured by Northern blot analysis of total liver RNA and rocket immunoelectrophoresis of mouse sera. Moderate levels of lead exposure were sufficient to evoke the human TF transgene response; blood lead levels in mice that received lead acetate in drinking water ranged from 30 micrograms/dl to 56 micrograms/dl. In addition to suppressing expression of TF-CAT genes in transgenic mice, lead also suppressed synthesis of TF protein in cultured human hepatoma HepG2 cells. The regulation of human TF apparently differs from the regulation of mouse TF which is unresponsive to lead exposure.     

Microwave Heating and Drying in Textile Processing?Present and Future

The state of the art of microwave heating and drying of textile materials is discussed, along with the potential for this technology to improve the productivity of the textile industry. A complete search of the literature has revealed the important research and development which has been performed related to microwave heating and drying of textiles. A review of this literature has identified the major technological barriers which inhibit widespread adoption of microwave heating and drying by the textile industry. The role that microwaves can play in accomplishing heating and drying steps currently being performed by thermal means is evaluated along with the potential technical and economic benefits.     

Short-term psychotherapy and graduate training in psychology.

We present the thesis that the psychology internship and the university-affiliated practicum site offer a special opportunity to train new professionals in brief psychotherapy. The reasons for this include (a) a growing client demand for time-limited treatment and hence psychology's responsibility to prepare professionals in this mode of intervention, (b) a period of residence that can be comfortably tailored to training in short-term psychotherapy, and (c) trainees who are eager to learn a pragmatic form of intervention. Training considerations are outlined and include client selection variables, therapist/trainee considerations, and supervision/teaching. Conclusions are offered and emphasize the agency's and supervisors' need to feel a commitment to train in this modality. Likewise, the program should seek trainees who are eager to learn brief psychotherapy. In order to maximize the opportunity for a successful experience, careful consideration should be given to client selection criteria. Schizophrenic symptoms, work adjustment, and behavioral family therapy.

Investigated work adjustment among 41 recently exacerbated patients (aged 21–42 yrs) with schizophrenia who were randomly assigned to receive either customary care alone or behavioral family therapy (BFT) and customary care. At baseline, most Ss were unemployed and evidenced poor work adjustment. Negative schizophrenic symptoms were more strongly associated with current work dysfunction than were indices of other psychopathology. At 1 yr, significantly fewer Ss participating in BFT had evidenced psychotic exacerbations. However, vocational adjustment in both groups was still poor, with few benefits of BFT on work functioning noted. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)
