The treatment and favorable outcome of a bitch with uterine torsion and two retained fetuses are described. The condition was corrected surgically by ovariohysterectomy. Complications (i.e., septic shock, peritonitis, and hemostatic abnormalities) were managed with aggressive medical therapy. Torsion of the gravid uterus in dogs is a life-threatening condition which can have a successful outcome if medical complications encountered in the pre- and postoperative periods are treated quickly and effectively.  相似文献

Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) are often recognized as less competitive than traditional electric energy conversion systems. Obstacles with renewable electric energy conversion systems are often referred to the intermittency of the energy sources [1] and the relatively high maintenance cost. However, due to an intensified discourse on climate change and its effects, it has from a societal point of view, become more desirable to adopt and install CO2 neutral power plants. Even if this has increased the competitiveness of RETs in a political sense, the new goals for RET installations must also be met with economical viability. We propose that the direction of technical development, as well as the chosen technology in new installations, should not primarily be determined by policies, but by the basic physical properties of the energy source and the associated potential for inexpensive energy production. This potential is the basic entity that drives the payback of the investment of a specific RET power plant. With regard to this, we argue that the total electric energy conversion system must be considered if effective power production is to be achieved, with focus on the possible number of full loading hours and the Degree of Utilization [2]. This will increase the cost efficiency and economical competitiveness of RET investments, and could enhance faster diffusion of new innovations and installations without over-optimistic subsidies. This paper elaborates on the overall problem of the economy of renewable electric energy conversion systems by studying the interface between physics, engineering and economy reported for RET power plants in different scientific publications. The core objective is to show the practical use of the Degree of Utilization and how the concept is crucial for the design and economical optimization disregarding subsidies. The results clearly indicate that the future political regulative frameworks should consider the choice of renewable energy source since this strongly affects the economical output from the RET power plants.  相似文献

A small (1 L) batch stirred cell system has been developed to study crude oil fouling at surface temperatures up to 400°C and pressures up to 30 bar. Fouling resistance–time data are obtained from experiments in which the principal operating variables are surface shear stress, surface temperature, heat flux, and crude oil type. The oils and deposits are characterized and correlated with the experimental heat transfer fouling data to understand better the effects of process conditions such as surface temperature and surface shear stress on the fouling process. Deposits are subjected to a range of qualitative and quantitative analyses in order to gain a better insight into the crude oil fouling phenomenon. Thermal data that can be obtained relatively quickly from the batch cell provide fouling rates, Arrhenius plots, and apparent activation energies as a function of process variables. The experimental system, supported by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies, allows fouling threshold conditions of surface temperature and shear stress to be identified relatively quickly in the laboratory. The data also contribute to existing knowledge about the compensation plot.  相似文献

The relatively flat lateral gain profile across a wide-strip laser diode does not allow sufficient overlap with the Gaussian fundamental mode of an external resonator to achieve saturation of the gain in the wings of the mode profile. Thus, parasitic free-running oscillation of the diode in an external-cavity laser is permitted by residual facet reflectivity of the antireflection-coated diode, and degrades the lateral-mode-selectivity of the external resonator at injection currents exceeding the threshold of the solitary diode. Immunoregulatory effects of thymic peptides on functions of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) are poorly investigated. We studied the effects of prothymosin alpha 1 (Pro alpha 1) on PMNs from patients with colorectal tumors, breast tumors and melanoma (total n = 37) in comparison with healthy donors (n = 18), with respect to chemotaxis, cytotoxicity against HCT-116 colon tumor cells, oxidative response (chemiluminescence reaction) as well as expression of surface marker molecules. We found that Pro alpha 1 was equally effective in stimulating the chemotactic activity of PMNs from tumor patients and healthy donors (43% increase). PMNs from tumor patients, especially with breast tumor, showed a significant enhancement of cytotoxicity against the tumor target cells in comparison with healthy donors. With respect to the PMNs cytotoxicity, only about 50% of the colorectal tumor patients and healthy donors responded to Pro alpha 1 and FMLP. As to the oxidative response of PMNs, elevated levels were found only among colorectal tumor patients. Pro alpha 1 significantly increased the oxidative response in breast and colorectal tumor patients by 55% and 25%, respectively. Pro alpha 1 decreased the expression of CD16 on PMNs of healthy donors, but not that of CD11a, CD11b, CD11c, CD13, CD14, CD15 and CD32. Therefore, we suggest, that Pro alpha 1 may improve some PMN functions of tumor patients, associated with the proposed role in host-tumor interaction.  相似文献
