Second generation biofuels are produced in the bioliq® process at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology via gasification of pyrolysis oil and synthesis of gasoline from the emerging synthesis gas. An alternative strategy is the direct upgrading of the pyrolysis oil by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). The present study reports on the HDO of guaiacol as one of the phenolic compounds strongly abundant in such mixtures. Special focus was laid on the solvent influence using Pt‐based catalysts. Higher HDO ability was seen using nonpolar solvents and acidic supports. Characterization of the catalysts before and after the test showed that the solvent did not only influence the reactivity, but also the catalyst stability.  相似文献

The increase of proinflammatory cytokines in vaginal secretions may serve as a surrogate marker of unwanted inflammatory reaction to microbicide products topically applied for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV-1. Interleukin (IL)-1beta and IL-6 have been proposed as indicators of inflammation and increased risk of HIV-1 transmission; however, the lack of information regarding detection platforms optimal for vaginal fluids and interlaboratory variation limit their use for microbicide evaluation and other clinical applications. This study examines fluid matrix variants relevant to vaginal sampling techniques and proposes a model for interlaboratory comparisons across current cytokine detection technologies. IL-1beta and IL-6 standards were measured by 12 laboratories in four countries, using 14 immunoassays and four detection platforms based on absorbance, chemiluminescence, electrochemiluminescence, and fluorescence. International reference preparations of cytokines with defined biological activity were spiked into (1) a defined medium simulating the composition of human vaginal fluid at pH 4.5 and 7.2, (2) physiologic salt solutions (phosphate-buffered saline and saline) commonly used for vaginal lavage sampling in clinical studies of cytokines, and (3) human blood serum. Assays were assessed for reproducibility, linearity, accuracy, and significantly detectable fold difference in cytokine level. Factors with significant impact on cytokine recovery were determined by Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance with Dunn's multiple comparison test and multiple regression models. All assays showed acceptable intra-assay reproducibility; however, most were associated with significant interlaboratory variation. The smallest reliably detectable cytokine differences ( P < 0.05) derived from pooled interlaboratory data varied from 1.5- to 26-fold depending on assay, cytokine, and matrix type. IL-6 but not IL-1beta determinations were lower in both saline and phosphate-buffered saline as compared to vaginal fluid matrix, with no significant effect of pH. The (electro)chemiluminescence-based assays were most discriminative and consistently detected <2-fold differences within each matrix type. The Luminex-based assays were less discriminative with lower reproducibility between laboratories. These results suggest the need for uniform vaginal sampling techniques and a better understanding of immunoassay platform differences and cross-validation before the biological significance of cytokine variations can be validated in clinical trials. This investigation provides the first standardized analytic approach for assessing differences in mucosal cytokine levels and may improve strategies for monitoring immune responses at the vaginal mucosal interface.  相似文献

Networks distribute energy, materials and information to the components of a variety of natural and human-engineered systems, including organisms, brains, the Internet and microprocessors. Distribution networks enable the integrated and coordinated functioning of these systems, and they also constrain their design. The similar hierarchical branching networks observed in organisms and microprocessors are striking, given that the structure of organisms has evolved via natural selection, while microprocessors are designed by engineers. Metabolic scaling theory (MST) shows that the rate at which networks deliver energy to an organism is proportional to its mass raised to the 3/4 power. We show that computational systems are also characterized by nonlinear network scaling and use MST principles to characterize how information networks scale, focusing on how MST predicts properties of clock distribution networks in microprocessors. The MST equations are modified to account for variation in the size and density of transistors and terminal wires in microprocessors. Based on the scaling of the clock distribution network, we predict a set of trade-offs and performance properties that scale with chip size and the number of transistors. However, there are systematic deviations between power requirements on microprocessors and predictions derived directly from MST. These deviations are addressed by augmenting the model to account for decentralized flow in some microprocessor networks (e.g. in logic networks). More generally, we hypothesize a set of constraints between the size, power and performance of networked information systems including transistors on chips, hosts on the Internet and neurons in the brain.  相似文献

Abnormal grain growth is a commonly observed phenomenon in barium titanate. It is usually associated with grain boundaries of different mobility and energy present in the microstructure. The influence of interfaces with variable mobility and energy on grain growth is investigated by a combined experimental and numerical approach in a transition region where growth behaviour strongly deviates from Arrhenius behaviour. Abnormal growth occurs between 1275 and 1325 °C, with normal grain growth occurring above and below this temperature range. The overall grain growth rate of the small matrix grains in the transition region is found to increase nonlinearly with inverse temperature between the high- and low-temperature states. A similar behaviour is found in simulations using a 3-D mesoscale grain growth model under the assumption of fractions of grain boundaries being in the high- or low-temperature state. The transition at the grain boundary is in agreement with the complexion model. Additionally, the simulation is used to map the nucleation probability for abnormal grains in the transition region as a function of combined energy and mobility advantages. The energy advantage of the grain boundaries is found to be of greater importance for the nucleation of abnormal grains compared to results from mean field models.  相似文献

This article analyzes whether state-approved jury instructions adequately guide jury discretion in the penalty phase of first-degree murder trials. It examines Eighth Amendment jurisprudence regarding guided jury discretion, emphasizing the use of "empirical factors" to examine the quality of state-approved instructions. Psychological research and testimony on the topic of the comprehensibility of jury logical instructions are reviewed. Data from a recently completed simulation with 80 deliberating juries showed that current instructions do not adequately convey the concepts and processes essential to guiding penalty phase judgments. An additional simulation with 20 deliberating juries demonstrated that deliberation alone does not correct for jurors' errors in comprehension. Comments on D. Kipnis's (see record 199707781-001) article that critically analyzes social psychology's assumption that psychological states can explain social behavior. The present authors point out that there are many sources in social psychology that, in fact, have revealed a vibrant and rigorous discipline in which, contrary to Kipnis's "caricature," explanations are routinely empirically questioned, variables are directly manipulated and measured, often along with their physiological and neuro-electrical correlates, and multivariate approaches address the separate and joint impact of multiple predictors on multiple dependent variables. It is also noted that Kipnis ignored social psychological research in which experimenters have assessed the physiological correlates of cognitive states. Photovoltaic (PV) water pumping systems have been widely tested and assessed in Indonesia because of the deficiency of potable water in remote areas. Several different PV water pumping systems, such as a.c./d.c. with/without battery and various pumps, have been tested in the field. Further study, evaluation and classification of optimized PV water pumping systems is needed. Three of those pumping systems were installed in Sumba Island in 1983, in three adjacent villages with similar climate and environment conditions. Two of the installations had a.c. direct coupled systems and the other had d.c. The a.c. systems used a 3.65 kWp PV generator each and the d.c. system used 5.76 kWp. After comparing the performance data of both systems, it can be concluded that the a.c. system performs better and needs less maintenance on the pump. In May 1987, as a result of this evaluation, the 5.76 kWp d.c. system was replaced by an a.c. one, and its capacity was increased to 9.22 kWp. Meanwhile, the 3.65 kWp a.c. system was increased to 3.88 kWp.  相似文献

Effects of the Leslie viscosity coefficients αi (i = 1, 2, …, 5) of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) with negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε < 0) on the electric-field-induced director reorientation in homeotropic NLC cells have been studied from the analysis of the transient current induced by step voltage application. The transient current in a homeotropic NLC cell with Δε < 0 was well reproduced by computer simulation, based on the theory of NLCs in which the flow effects and the free-slip boundary condition are taken into account. It is found that the response time of vertical alignment NLC displays is dominantly governed by α2 and α4 + α5 of NLCs with Δε < 0.  相似文献

An einem Schnellarbeitsstahl der Sorte S 6–5–2 wird der Einfluß von bis zu 5% Si auf das Erstarrungsverhalten untersucht und in Temperatur-Kenzentration-Schnitten dargestellt. Ausgehend vom Gußzustand werden chemische Zusammensetzung, Menge und Mengenverteilung der Carbide MC, M2C, M6C und eines als Primärcarbid in diesem Stahltyp bislang unbekannten M7C3-Carbides festgestellt. Die nur beim M6C-Carbid beobachtete Aufnahme von Silicium und Verdrängung von Wolfram, Molybdän und Eisen sowie das Auftreten einer Löslichkeitsgrenze für dieses Element werden anhand der Atomanordnung der Elementarzelle von M6C gedeutet.  相似文献
