Biotechnology-derived food crops are currently being developed in Malaysia mainly for disease resistance and improved post harvest quality. The modern biotechnology approach is adopted because of its potential to overcome constraints faced by conventional breeding techniques. Research on the development of biotechnology-derived papaya, pineapple, chili, passion fruit, and citrus is currently under way. Biotechnology-derived papaya developed for resistance to papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) and improved postharvest qualities is at the field evaluation stage. Pineapple developed for resistance to fruit black heart disorder is also being evaluated for proof-of-concept. Other biotechnology-derived food crops are at early stages of gene cloning and transformation. Activities and products involving biotechnology-derived crops will be fully regulated in the near future under the Malaysian Biosafety Law. At present they are governed only by guidelines formulated by the Genetic Modification Advisory Committee (GMAC), Malaysia. Commercialization of biotechnology-derived crops involves steps that require GMAC approval for all field evaluations and food-safety assessments before the products are placed on the market. Public acceptance of the biotechnology product is another important factor for successful commercialization. Understanding of biotechnology is generally low among Malaysians, which may lead to low acceptance of biotechnology-derived products. Initiatives are being taken by local organizations to improve public awareness and acceptance of biotechnology. Future research on plant biotechnology will focus on the development of nutritionally enhanced biotechnology-derived food crops that can provide more benefits to consumers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:  Free radical scavenging activity of 21 tropical plant extracts was evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH). Total phenolic compounds and flavonoids were determined using Folin–Ciocalteu and HPLC, respectively. Results of the study revealed that all the plants tested exhibited excellent antioxidant activity with IC50 in the range of 21.3 to 89.6 μg/mL. The most potent activity was demonstrated by  Cosmos caudatus  (21.3 μg/mL) and  Piper betle  (23.0 μg/mL) that are not significantly different than that of     -tocopherol or BHA.  L. inermis  extract was found to consist of the highest concentration of phenolics, catechin, epicatechin, and naringenin. High content of quercetin, myricetin, and kaempferol were identified in  Vitex negundo ,  Centella asiatica , and  Sesbania grandiflora  extracts, respectively. Luteolin and apigenin, on the other hand, were found in  Premna cordifolia  and  Kaempferia galanga  extracts. Strong correlation ( R  = 0.8613) between total phenolic compounds and total flavonoids ( R  = 0.8430) and that of antioxidant activity of the extracts were observed. The study revealed that phenolic, in particular flavonoids, may be the main contributors to the antioxidant activity exhibited by the plants.
Practical Application: Potent antioxidant from natural sources is of great interest to replace the use of synthetic antioxidants. In addition, some of the plants have great potential to be used in the development of functional ingredients/foods that are currently in demand for the health benefits associated with their use.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Barley is the basic raw material for brewing. Its chemical composition, brewing, and technological indices are highly determinative for the beer quality and the economical efficiency of the brewing process. Barley is rich in protein, carbohydrates, dietary fibers, minerals, and vitamins. The presence of nonstarch polysaccharides as mixed linkage (1‐3),(1‐4)‐β‐d ‐glucans and arabinoxylans together with the enzymes are responsible for barley modification. Malting is a complex process that involves many enzymes; important ones are α‐amylase, β‐amylase, α‐glucosidase, and limit dextrinase. During the process of malting and brewing, the by‐products left after separation of the wort are rich in protein, fibers, arabinoxylans, and β‐glucan. This review summarizes and integrates barley grain with respect to nutritional, functional, and compositional changes that take place during malting and brewing. It also explores in‐depth the several by‐products obtained after brewing and their potential for various food applications. Barley brewing by‐products offer an opportunity for cereal‐based baked and extruded products with acceptable sensory and nutritional characteristics.  相似文献

Supported nickel oxide based catalysts were prepared by wetness impregnation method for the in-situ reactions of H2S desulfurization and CO2 methanation from ambient temperature up to 300 °C. Fe/Co/Ni (10:30:60)–Al2O3 and Pr/Co/Ni (5:35:60)–Al2O3 catalysts were revealed as the most potential catalysts, which yielded 2.9% and 6.1% of CH4 at reaction temperature of 300 °C, respectively. From XPS, Ni2O3 and Fe3O4 were suggested as the surface active components on the Fe/Co/Ni (10:30:60)–Al2O3 catalyst, while Ni2O3 and Co3O4 on the Pr/Co/Ni (5:35:60)–Al2O3 catalyst.  相似文献

The effect of partial replacement of silica or calcium carbonate (CaCO3) by halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the curing behavior, tensile properties, dynamic mechanical properties, and morphological characteristics of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) composites was studied. Five different compositions of EPDM/Silica/HNT and EPDM/CaCO3/HNT compounds (i.e. 100/30/0, 100/25/5, 100/15/15, 100/5/25, and 100/0/30 parts per hundred rubber (phr)) were prepared on a two‐roll mill. The results indicated that the replacement of CaCO3 by HNTs increased the tensile strength, elongation at break (Eb), and tensile modulus of composites from 0 to 30 phr of HNTs whereas for silica, the maximum tensile strength and Eb occurred at 5 phr loading of HNTs with an enhanced stress at 300% elongation (M300). The curing results show that, with replacement of silica or CaCO3 by HNTs, the cure time (t90) and cure rate (CRI) were decreased and increased, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy investigation confirmed that co‐incorporation of 5 phr of HNTs with silica would improve the dispersion of silica and enhanced the interactions between fillers and EPDM matrix. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper presents a novel modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO), which includes advantages of bacterial foraging (BF) and PSO for constrained dynamic economic dispatch (ED) problem. The proposed modified PSO consists of problem dependent four promising values in velocity vector to incorporate repellent advantage of bacterial foraging in PSO for the complex dynamic ED problem. It reliably and accurately tracks a continuously changing solution of the complex cost functions. As there is no differentiation operation in this method, all cost functions can easily be handled. The modified PSO has better balance between local and global search abilities and it can avoid local minima quickly. Finally, a benchmark data set and existing methods are used to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.  相似文献

Infant milk formula has been identified as a potential source of Enterobacter sakazakii, which has been implicated in neonatal meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis. This study was undertaken to determine whether the length of E. sakazakii storage in powdered infant milk formula (PIMF) affected the ability of the pathogen to survive subsequent reconstitution of the powder with hot water or treatment with gamma radiation. Five E. sakazakii strains were mixed individually with PIMF and kept for up to 12 months at 25 degrees C. After storage PIMF was reconstituted with water at 60 to 100 degrees C or was exposed to < or = 5 kGy of gamma radiation. Without any treatment secondary to drying, E. sakazakii counts decreased < 1 log/g after 1 month but decreased about 4 log/g during storage for 8 to 12 months. Dry storage decreased thermal resistance but increased resistance of E. sakazakii to ionizing radiation in PIMF. Reconstitution of contaminated powder with water at 70 degrees C after 1 month of dry storage reduced E. sakazakii viability slightly, > 2 log/g, and after powder was stored for 12 months all E. sakazakii strains were eliminated. In contrast, desiccation substantially increased the resistance of E. sakazakii strains to ionizing radiation. Although the D-value for E. sakazakii IMF1 following overnight storage in PIMF was 0.98 kGy, > 4 kGy was required to kill 1.5 log/g of the same strain that had survived 12 months in dry PIMF. Results suggested that low-dose irradiation will more effectively eliminate E. sakazakii from PIMF if the treatment is applied shortly after PIMF manufacture.  相似文献

Enterobacter sakazakii is an opportunistic foodborne pathogen that has been isolated from powdered infant milk formula. This study determined the effect of desiccation, starvation, heat and cold stresses on the thermal inactivation of E. sakazakii in rehydrated infant milk formula (RIMF). Stressed cells were mixed with RIMF at 52, 54, 56, and 58 degrees C for various time periods. The D- and z-values were determined by using linear regression analysis. D-values for unstressed E. sakazakii at 52, 54, 56, and 58 degrees C were 15.33, 4.53, 2, and 0.53 min, respectively. Desiccation and heat stresses, but not starvation or cold stress, caused significant (P < 0.05) reduction in D-values. The z-values of desiccated, starved, heat stressed, and cold stressed E. sakazakii were not significantly different from unstressed cells (4.22 degrees C). Thermal resistance of E. sakazakii in RIMF is affected by the environmental stresses; that is, desiccation and heat stresses that may surround the bacterium prior to the contamination of infant formula. The results of this study may be of use to regulatory agencies, infant milk producers, and infant caregivers to design heating processes to eliminate E. sakazakii that may be present in infant milk formula.  相似文献

The mass transfer of substrates through a bio-catalytic membrane layer is a key issue in determining the performance of β-galactosidase-catalyzed conversion of lactose in a hollow fiber membrane reactor (HFMR) system. An investigation on the effect of solutes mass transfer through a bio-catalytic membrane layer was carried out using the coupled mass transfer-reaction model. Product formation was reduced at a trans-membrane pressure (TMP) of higher than 0.5?bar. Meanwhile, the concentration polarization modulus of solutes rapidly increased with higher TMP and this result suggests the formation of gel layer, which reduced bio-catalysis rate at higher applied TMP. The concentration profile of solutes or substrates on the bio-catalytic membrane surface, which determines the rate of reaction was reduced due to mass transfer limitation. This investigation highlights that the formation of substrate-β-gal complex in an immobilized system is influenced by the mass transfer behavior of its substrate.  相似文献

The exhibited geometry of catalytic substrates can have a significant influence on the chemical activity and efficiency. Controlling their geometry can be challenging using the traditional techniques. In this work, we propose new and novel catalytic substrates with architected and controllable topologies based on the minimal surfaces framework. A novel design approach and an additive manufacturing (AM) technique were proposed to manufacture the catalytic substrates using ceramic materials. After 3D printing, their mechanical and flow properties were investigated experimentally. An elastic-plastic-damage coupled model was employed to investigate the underlying deformation mechanism of the investigated substrates. Results showed that the CLP substrate exhibited the highest mechanical properties as well as the least pressure drop among the tested substrates. Also, numerical simulations showed that the strut-based substrates exhibit stress localization which leads to faster failure, while stress is distributed more homogeneously in the sheet-based substrates. While the model showed to have a good agreement in the experimental and simulation stress-strain responses, the damage mechanism was not fully captured by the numerical simulations. This was attributed mainly to the process-induced defects in the form of microcracks and microvoids that can alter the nature of deformation and damage.  相似文献
