Slope stability problems in the area between St. George and St. Herene villages and their significance for the main road Argostoli–Poros on Kefallonia Island, Greece

The serious landslide phenomena manifested between St. George and St. Herene villages and affecting the main road on Kefallonia Island are reported. The site investigation included four sampling boreholes and a series of slope stability analyses. The data obtained provided further information on the geotechnical–geomechanical characteristics of the Neogene bedrock and assisted in the determination of the causes of the instability. Measures are suggested to avoid a re-occurrence of such failures. Electronic Publication     

Forensic implications of identity systems

With the use of new identity systems and devices, such as mobile communication networks and biometric devices, new forensic aspects are important: How do legal systems support the use of new evidence in court? And how reliable (e.g. tamper proof) are the devices and thus the extracted evidence?     

Activation of solid polymer surfaces with bifunctional reagents

An original procedure is described which calls upon the heterogeneous grafting of bifunctional molecules onto a reactive polymeric surface, leaving one of the functions available for further exploitation. The principle of this strategy is to use reagents characterised by a rigid planar structure bearing the two active moieties at opposite sites of the molecule. The examples provided include the reactions of lignocellulosic fibres with 1,4‐phenyl diisocyanate and 1,2,4,5‐benzenetetracarboxylic anhydride, which give rise to their surface activation through the incorporation of covalently bound isocyanate or anhydride functions. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry     

Synthesis and characterization of reversible and self‐healable networks based on acylhydrazone groups

A series of seven dynamic covalent networks based on pentaerythritol tetra(benzohydrazide) and 1,10‐decanediol dibenzaldehyde were prepared in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF). The equilibrium degree of swelling in DMF and the sol fraction displayed a minimum at or near the hydrazide–benzaldehyde stoichiometric ratio. The composition of the sol fraction changed according to the feed composition, with the dibenzaldehyde‐rich preparations exhibiting extractables composed of star oligomers based on tetra(benzohydrazide) cores. Finally, network reversibility and self‐healing were demonstrated in the presence of acid. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry

Highly Conducting Polypyrrole/Cellulose Nanocomposite Films with Enhanced Mechanical Properties

PPy was synthesised by oxidative chemical polymerisation using xylan, CMC and NFC as additives. Conducting nanocomposite films were cast from aqueous slurries using doped PPy particles, CMC and NFC as the conducting and reinforcing phase, respectively. NFC‐based composites had higher conductivity and lower mechanical properties than CMC‐based homologues. SEM analysis showed that in PPy/NFC composites, PPy and NFC were arranged in two entangled networks, whereas, in PPy/NFC composites, CMC formed a continuous matrix around PPy particles, thus limiting conductivity. Mechanical properties of nanocomposite films were interpreted as reflecting the presence of different structures when using NFC or CMC as reinforcing phase.

     

Laminar and blazed type holographic gratings for a versatile soft x-ray spectrograph attached to an electron microscope and their evaluation in the 50-200 eV range

Laminar and blazed type holographic varied-line-spacing spherical gratings for use in a versatile soft x-ray flat-field spectrograph attached to an electron microscope are designed, fabricated, and evaluated. The absolute diffraction efficiencies of laminar (or blazed) master and replica gratings at 86.00° incidence evaluated by synchrotron radiation show over 5% (or 8%) in the 50-200 eV range with the maxima of 22% (or 26%-27%). Also the resolving power evaluated by a laser produced plasma source is in excess of 700 at the energy near the K emission spectrum of lithium (~55 eV) for all gratings. Moreover, the K emission spectrum of metallic Li with high spectral resolution is successfully observed with the spectrograph attached to a transmission electron microscope.
