Exponential increases in multiracial identities, expected over the next century, create a conundrum for perceivers accustomed to classifying people as their own- or other-race. The current research examines how perceivers resolve this dilemma with regard to the own-race bias. The authors hypothesized that perceivers are not motivated to include ambiguous-race individuals in the in-group and therefore have some difficulty remembering these individuals. Both racially ambiguous and other-race faces were misremembered more often than own-race faces (Study 1), though memory for ambiguous faces was improved among perceivers motivated to include biracial individuals in the in-group (Study 2). Racial labels assigned to racially ambiguous faces determined memory for these faces, suggesting that uncertainty provides the motivational context for discounting ambiguous faces in memory (Study 3). Finally, an inclusion motivation fostered cognitive associations between racially ambiguous faces and the in-group. Moreover, the extent to which perceivers associated racially ambiguous faces with the in-group predicted memory for ambiguous faces and accounted for the impact of motivation on memory (Study 4). A disadvantage of selective laser melting (SLM) processes for the manufacture of large parts is their slow build time per unit volume. A hybrid route is to generate core simple shapes traditionally, for example by machining, followed by adding final features by SLM. Here the mechanical integrity of such hybrid parts is studied, choosing the building of AlSi10Mg by SLM on a machined AA6082 base, in the shape of a tensile test piece, as a simple example. These materials are chosen for their relevance to lightweight parts. As-built parts fail at the SLM/machined interface but standard heat treatments transfer failures to the machined material. Optimised SLM processing conditions and microstructures of the SLM and interfacial regions are reported.  相似文献

We report a total‐area power conversion efficiency of 15% for a copper indium gallium disulfoselenide (CIGSSe) solar cell fabricated from a copper indium gallium disulfide (CIGS) nanoparticle ink based process. Careful optimization of the fabrication process has resulted in a significant improvement in efficiency compared to our previously reported efficiency of 12%. This efficiency ranks among the highest reported in the literature for solution processed CIGSSe. Despite having an absorber thickness of approximately 700–800 nm, which is less than half the thickness of high efficiency devices grown by both coevaporation and solution processes in the literature, our devices show good short‐circuit current (32.1 mA/cm2). Surprisingly, the sintered film shows lateral composition fluctuations, which have not been reported for other high efficiency devices and may be responsible for the lower open circuit voltage (636 mV) observed here. This suggests an avenue for further improvement through optimization of the nanoparticle selenization process to better control composition in the sintered film. The role of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRS) in the emergence and evolution of genetic coding poses challenging questions concerning their provenance. We seek evidence about their ancestry from curated structure-based multiple sequence alignments of a structurally invariant “scaffold” shared by all 10 canonical Class I aaRS. Three uncorrelated phylogenetic metrics—mutation frequency, its uniformity, and row-by-row cladistic congruence—imply that the Class I scaffold is a mosaic assembled from successive genetic sources. Metrics for different modules vary in accordance with their presumed functionality. Sequences derived from the ATP– and amino acid– binding sites exhibit specific two-way coupling to those derived from Connecting Peptide 1, a third module whose metrics suggest later acquisition. The data help validate: (i) experimental fragmentations of the canonical Class I structure into three partitions that retain catalytic activities in proportion to their length; and (ii) evidence that the ancestral Class I aaRS gene also encoded a Class II ancestor in frame on the opposite strand. A 46-residue Class I “protozyme” roots the Class I tree prior to the adaptive radiation of the Rossmann dinucleotide binding fold that refined substrate discrimination. Such rooting implies near simultaneous emergence of genetic coding and the origin of the proteome, resolving a conundrum posed by previous inferences that Class I aaRS evolved after the genetic code had been implemented in an RNA world. Further, pinpointing discontinuous enhancements of aaRS fidelity establishes a timeline for the growth of coding from a binary amino acid alphabet.  相似文献

The jaw fat of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) contains unusual wax esters which can be separated into short chain (<C24) and long chain (>C24) fractions by thin layer chromatography. The short chain wax esters (28 wt. %) have been characterized as a 72∶24∶4 mixture of isovaleroyl, isobutoryl, and 2-methylbutyrol, esters of C14–C18 n- and iso-alcohols. The intact <C24 esters have been resolved into individual molecular species by gas liquid chromatography on open-tubular polyester columns. The long chain wax esters (12 wt. %) contain C10–C22 n- and iso-acids esterified to the same C14–C18 n- and iso-alcohols. Gas liquid chromatography of the intact, hydrogenated >C24 esters on a short JXR column has characterized them according to carbon number and the number of methyl branches they contain.  相似文献

Continuous α-Fe2O3 films grown on bulk (0001)Al2O2 substrates by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition have been studied by transmission electron microscopy and the observations compared to those obtained from discontinuous films at an earlier stage of the growth process. Plan-view specimens revealed significant thermal stress in the continuous films, while cross-sectional specimens showed that cracking occurs in thicker films. The free surface of the film and the film/substrate interface appeared sharp and flat, apart from growth ledges and steps. Weak-beam imaging revealed a hexagonal misfit dislocation network consisting of perfect edge dislocations. Fine structure in the selected-area diffraction patterns which corroborates these observations is also discussed. The misfit network of partial dislocations previously observed in the discontinuous films was not observed for the continuous films, indicating an effect of film thickness, growth rate, or surface preparation on the Fe2O3/(0001)Al2O3 interface structure.  相似文献

Ion irradiation can be used to induce partial crystallization in metallic glasses to improve their surface properties. We investigated the microstructural changes in ribbon Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 metallic glass after 1 MeV Cu-ion irradiation at room temperature, to a fluence of 1.0 × 1016 cm−2. In contrast to a recent report by others that there was no irradiation induced crystallization in the same alloy [S. Nagata, S. Higashi, B. Tsuchiya, K. Toh, T. Shikama, K. Takahiro, K. Ozaki, K. Kawatusra, S. Yamamoto, A. Inouye, Nucl. Instr. and Meth. B 257 (2007) 420], we have observed nanocrystals in the as-irradiated samples. Two groups of nanocrystals, one with diameters of 5–10 nm and another with diameters of 50–100 nm are observed by using high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Experimentally measured planar spacings (d-values) agree with the expectations for Cu10Zr7, NiZr2 and CuZr2 phases. We further discussed the possibility to form a substitutional intermetallic (NixCu1−x)Zr2 phase.  相似文献
