The basal ant Dinoponera (Hymenoptera: Ponerinae) has lost the morphologic queen caste so that all females may be potential reproductive individuals, and the nestmate recognition results from cuticular hydrocarbons cues. However, data about the origin of that substance in Ponerinae ants are scarce. This study reports the occurrence of epidermal glands in the abdomen of the ant Dinoponera lucida. In this ant, the epidermis of the abdominal sternites has tall cells with well-developed nucleus contrasting with flattened and collapsed epidermis in the tergites, suggesting a glandular function in the epidermis of the sternites. The possible role of the glandular epidermis in the synthesis of cuticular hydrocarbons for the nestmate recognition is discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: The present study was aimed to evaluate the effect of food deprivation in brain oxidative status of Wistar and Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats. For this purpose, we evaluated several oxidative stress parameters: lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances [TBARS]) and protein oxidation markers, hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) levels, nonenzymatic (reduced [GSH] and oxidized glutathione [GSSG] and vitamin E) and enzymatic (glutathione peroxidase [GPx], glutathione reductase [GRed], and manganese superoxide dismutase [MnSOD]) antioxidant defenses. Four-mo-old Wistar and GK rats were divided into 2 groups. One group of each rat strain was maintained under normal diet and the other groups were maintained under 50% food deprivation during 2 mo. GK rats under normal diet presented lower levels of vitamin E and higher GRed activity and GSH/GSSG ratio when compared with Wistar control rats. In Wistar rats, food deprivation induced a significant decrease in vitamin E levels and a significant increase in GPx activity, H2 O2 production, and TBARS formation in the presence of the prooxidant pair ADP/Fe2+ . However, GK rats under food deprivation presented a significant decrease in vitamin E levels and GRed activity and a significant increase in H2 O2 production when compared with GK under normal diet. In summary, our results indicate that food deprivation affects brain oxidative status, which could predispose brain cells to degeneration and death. 相似文献

The analysis of the propagation of Lamb waves in multi- and single-layer systems is presented in this work. The study of this propagation problem is developed from matrix formulations, which describe elastic waves in layered media. The behavior of the different modes that propagate in the overlapped region is characterized. It is found that their relative amplitudes can be estimated based on the properties of the incident wave mode. It was verified that the excitation of these modes is ruled by the degree in which the shapes of both modes match each other. Other result of this method refers to the evaluation of the attenuation of both longitudinal and transversal waves in plates, which is usually difficult, especially in thin plates by using the conventional pulse-echo technique. By using the immersion pitch and catch setup, the total attenuation, the sum of the losses due to the leaking in the fluid and to the material damping can easily be obtained through two measurements at different distances. The leaking losses are calculated by the bulk properties of both the fluid and the plate, and, consequently, the attenuation of the longitudinal and the transversal waves (material damping). 相似文献

This article analyzes the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical fibers and presents a new approach for its measurement. This approach permits the combined analysis of the first-order PMD and the second-order polarization mode dispersion (SOPMD) in optical systems for different values of temperature. The relation between SOPMD and the differential group delay (DGD) in a single-mode fiber is discussed. The analysis is based on time/wavelength and temperature variations changing/impacting PMD and DGD measured values. We present long-term statistical characteristics of SOPMD acquired by a PMD emulator constructed with some pieces of high birefringence fiber, and the correlation between the SOPMD, depolarization (Depol) and polarization-dependent chromatic dispersion (PCD) was investigated. A new interpretation of SOPMD is presented to analyze the problem of the temperature spectral stability. The actual techniques for SOPMD determination, consequently Depol and PCD, use the variation with time and/or wavelength. In some studies, the results obtained for SOPMD are correlated to first-order PMD. We demonstrate experimentally that the temperature is an important factor for the correlation between SOPMD and PMD and cannot be neglected in the optimization of high-speed optical communications links. 相似文献

A novel hydrogel, based on an alginate/hyaluronate mixture and Ce(III) ions, with effective bioactive and antimicrobial ability was developed to be used as vehicle of a synthetic bone substitute producing an injectable substitute (IBS). Firstly, three different IBSs were prepared using three developed alginate-based hydrogels, the hydrogel Alg composed by alginate, the hydrogel Alg/Ch composed by an alginate/chitosan mixture and the hydrogel Alg/HA composed by an alginate/hyaluronate mixture. MG63 cells viability on the IBSs was evaluated, being observed a significantly higher cell viability on the Alg/HA_IBS at all time points, which indicates a better cell adaptation to the material, increasing their predisposition to produce extracellular matrix and thus allowing a better bone regeneration. Moreover, SEM analysis showed evident filopodia and a spreader shape of MG63 cells when seeded on Alg/HA_IBS. This way, based upon the in vitro results, the hydrogel Alg/HA was chosen to the in vivo study by subcutaneous implantation in an animal model, promoting a slight irritating tissue response and visible tissue repairing. The next step was to grant antimicrobial properties to the hydrogel that showed the best biological behavior by incorporation of Ce(III) ions into the Alg/HA, producing the hydrogel Alg/HA2. The antimicrobial activity of these hyaluronate-based hydrogels was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. Results showed that Ce(III) ions can significantly enhance the hydrogel antimicrobial ability without compromising the osteoconductivity improvement promoted by the vehicle association to the synthetic bone substitute. 相似文献

The mechanical strength of bioactive glasses can be improved by controlled crystallization, turning its use as bulk bone implants viable. However, crystallization may affect the bioactivity of the material. The aim of this study was to develop glass–ceramics of the nominal composition (wt%) 52.75(3CaO·P2O5)–30SiO2–17.25MgO, with different crystallized fractions and to evaluate their in vitro cytotoxicity and bioactivity. Specimens were heat-treated at 700, 775 and 975 °C, for 4 h. The major crystalline phase identified was whitlockite, an Mg-substituted tricalcium phosphate. The evaluation of the cytotoxicity was carried out by the neutral red uptake methodology. Ionic exchanges with the simulated body fluid SBF-K9 acellular solution during the in vitro bioactivity tests highlight the differences in terms of chemical reactivity between the glass and the glass–ceramics. The effect of crystallinity on the rates of hydroxycarbonate apatite (HCA) formation was followed by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. Although all glass–ceramics can be considered bioactive, the glass–ceramic heat-treated at 775 °C (V775-4) presented the most interesting result, because the onset for HCA formation is at about 24 h and after 7 days the HCA layer dominates completely the spectrum. This occurs probably due to the presence of the whitlockite phase (3(Ca,Mg)O·P2O5). All samples were considered not cytotoxic. 相似文献
