A signal subspace approach for extracting visual evoked potentials (VEPs) from the background electroencephalogram (EEG) colored noise without the need for a prewhitening stage is proposed. Linear estimation of the clean signal is performed by minimizing signal distortion while maintaining the residual noise energy below some given threshold. The generalized eigendecomposition of the covariance matrices of a VEP signal and brain background EEG noise is used to transform them jointly to diagonal matrices. The generalized subspace is then decomposed into signal subspace and noise subspace. Enhancement is performed by nulling the components in the noise subspace and retaining the components in the signal subspace. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested with simulated and real data, and compared with the recently proposed signal subspace techniques. With the simulated data, the algorithms are used to estimate the latencies of P(100), P(200), and P(300) of VEP signals corrupted by additive colored noise at different values of SNR. With the real data, the VEP signals are collected at Selayang Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the capability of the proposed algorithm in detecting the latency of P(100) is obtained and compared with other subspace techniques. The ensemble averaging technique is used as a baseline for this comparison. The results indicated significant improvement by the proposed technique in terms of better accuracy and less failure rate.  相似文献

We performed a macroscopic and microscopic study of the tongues of common opossums, Didelphis marsupialis, from South America. We studied two males and two females. We collected morphometric data on the tongue with precision calipers. For the light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses, we fixed tissue fragments in 10% formaldehyde and 2.5% glutaraldehyde, respectively. The opossum tongues averaged 5.87 ± 0.20 cm in length, 3.27 ± 0.15 cm in width at the lingual body, and 3.82 ± 0.15 cm in width at the root. The mean thickness of the lingual body was 1.8 ± 0.1 cm, and the thickness of the root was 3.82 ± 0.15 cm. Sharp filiform papillae were scattered across the entire tongue; conical filiform papillae occurred on the lingual body and tongue tip; fungiform papillae were scattered among the filiform papillae on the lingual body and tongue tip; and there were three vallate papillae at the root of the tongue. We found two strands of papillary projections in the tongue root. Despite the low variability observed in the lingual papillae, the morphological data obtained in this study may be related to the opossum's diverse food habits and the extensive geographic distribution of the species throughout America. Thiocoraline is a thiodepsipeptide antitumor compound produced by two actinomycetes Micromonospora sp. ACM2-092 and Micromonospora sp. ML1, isolated from two marine invertebrates (a soft coral and a mollusc) found of the Indian Ocean coast of Mozambique. By using oligoprimers derived from nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) consensus sequences, six PCR fragments containing putative NRPS adenylation domains were amplified from the chromosome of Micromonospora sp. ML1. Insertional inactivation of each adenylation domain showed that two of them generated nonproducing mutants, thereby indicating that these domains were involved in thiocoraline biosynthesis. Sequencing of a 64.6 kbp DNA region revealed the presence of 36 complete open reading frames (ORFs) and two incomplete ones. Heterologous expression of a region of about 53 kbp, containing 26 of the ORFs, in Streptomyces albus and S. lividans led to the production of thiocoraline in these streptomycetes. Surprisingly, the identified gene cluster contains more NRPS modules than expected on the basis of the number of amino acids of thiocoraline. TioR and TioS would most probably constitute the NRPS involved in the biosynthesis of the thiocoraline backbone, according to the colinearity of the respective modules. It is proposed that two other NRPSs, TioY and TioZ, could be responsible for the biosynthesis of a small peptide molecule which could be involved in regulation of the biosynthesis of thicoraline in Micromonospora sp. ML1. In addition, a pathway is proposed for the biosynthesis of the unusual starter unit, 3-hydroxy-quinaldic acid.  相似文献

A new method was developed in this study for testing excised sheep mandibles as a cantilever. The method was used to determine the strength and stiffness of sheep hemi-mandibles including a 35 mm defect bridged by regenerated bone. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-7 (rhBMP-7) in a bovine collagen type-I carrier was used for the bone regeneration. Initial tests on ten intact sheep mandibles confirmed that the strength, stiffness and area beneath the load-deformation curves of the right and left hemi-mandibles were not significantly different, confirming the validity of using the contra-lateral hemi-mandible as a control side. Complete bone regeneration occurred in six hemi-mandibles treated with rhBMP, but the quality and mechanical properties of the bone were very variable. The new bone in three samples contained fibrous tissue and was weaker and less stiff than the contra-lateral side (strength, 10-20 per cent; stiffness, 6-15 per cent). The other half had better-quality bone and was significantly stiffer and stronger (p < 0.05), with strength 45-63 per cent and stiffness 35-46 per cent of the contra-lateral side. Hemi-mandibles treated with collagen alone had no regenerated bone bridge suggesting that 35 mm is a critical-size bone defect.  相似文献

The heart can be studied using ultrasound techniques. The shape of the heart, its chambers, wall thicknesses, wall tissue characteristics as well as motion of walls and valve leaflets are all diagnostic information. In addition, the blood velocity and its timing within the cardiac cycle is an important diagnostic tool. In the present paper focus will be limited to the analysis of the left ventricular function as observed with two-dimensional and three-dimensional echocardiography and the characteristics of backscattered ultrasound information from the left ventricular chamber wall. Function of the heart is often studied by observation of local wall motion or comparison of chamber volume in maximum and minimum shapes during the cardiac cycle (ejection fraction). Integrated backscatter from the wall is described in examples of cardiac transplantation and hypertrophy. Study of cyclic variation of frequency-dependent attenuation and integrated backscatter indicates that these are independent parameters.  相似文献

In an observational cross-sectional design, a sample of 292 children aged 6-11 years from two primary schools around a shipyard area, known to be an area contaminated with lead (from the industry), were examined to verify the cariogenicity of lead. The number of decayed and filled surfaces on deciduous teeth (dfs), and the number of decayed, missing, and filled surfaces on permanent teeth (DMFS), the salivary flow rate, pH, buffer capacity, oral hygiene, Lactobacillus spp. and mutans streptococci counts were recorded. The mean (range) of DMFS and dfs were respectively 1.3 (range 0-17) and 13.2 (range 0-45); and the geometric mean blood lead level (PbB) and SD were 7.2 and 1.5 microg/dl. The level of dfs, but not DMFS correlated with the blood lead level (R(s)=0.25, p=0.00 / R(s)=0.09, p=0.14). The odds ratio for DMFS>or=1 and dfs>5 for a doubling of PbB after adjusting for other factors were 1.28 (95%CI, 0.81-2.04; p value=0.35) and 2.39 (95%CI, 1.36-4.20; p value=0.004), respectively. The cariogenicity of lead is evident in deciduous teeth but not in permanent teeth for this age group.  相似文献

A prototype ionisation chamber for direct measurement of the personal dose equivalent, Hp(10), similar to the one developed by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesantalt (PTB), was designed and constructed by the Metrological Laboratory of Ionizing Radiation (LMRI) of Nuclear and Technological Institute (ITN). Tests already performed have shown that the behaviour of this chamber is very similar to the PTB chamber, mainly the energy dependence for the X-ray radiation qualities of the ISO 4037-1 narrow series N-30, N-40, N-60, N-80, N-100 and N-120 and also for gamma radiation of 137Cs and 60Co. However, the results obtained also show a dependence on the energy and angles of incident radiation and a low magnitude of the electrical response of the ionisation chamber. In order to optimise the performance of the chamber, the LMRI initiated numerical simulation of this ionisation chamber by Monte Carlo method using the MCNPX code.  相似文献

The European Union Council Directive 96/29/EURATOM requires that 'individual monitoring shall be ... based on individual measurements which are established by an approved dosimetric service' and that 'Each Member State shall make arrangements to recognise, as appropriate, the capacity of ... approved dosimetric services'. At present, approval of dosimetric services does not have the same meaning within EU Member States and Switzerland. In some countries, service and dosemeter approval is clearly separated, in some others only one of the two is supposed to be tested, and in others no approval is required. Dosimetric requirements and criteria are based on different international documents (e.g. IEC, ISO, ANSI, CEC report) or national specific rules. Approval frequency can be once, every 2 or more years. Approval can be based on either evaluation of technical and management reports, irradiation tests, inspection on-site or the three steps together. In most cases, approval involves photon dosimetry while beta and neutron dosimetry test procedures are not as well established. However, comparisons may lead to some convergent evolution of procedures and to a greater degree of harmonisation and quality consolidation.  相似文献

An inversion method for the characterization of atmospheric condensed phases from infrared (IR) spectra is described. The method is tested with both synthetic IR spectra and the spectra of particles that flow in a cryogenic flow tube. The method is applied to the IR spectra recorded by the Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy instrument carried by the Space Shuttle during three missions in 1992, 1993, and 1994. The volume density and particle size distribution for sulfate aerosol are obtained as a function of altitude. The density and size distribution of ice particles in several cirrus clouds are also retrieved. The probable radius of the ice particles in the high-altitude (10-15-km) cirrus clouds is found to be approximately 6-7 microm.  相似文献

Well-aligned ZnO nanorod films were grown onto transparent conducting substrates by using an aqueous solution route. The presence of some reflections in the X-ray diffraction pattern of the ZnO films indicates the vertical alignment of the nanorods along the c axis of the wurtzite hexagonal structure. Well-aligned ZnO nanorods were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The presence of top ZnO microflower layers over the ZnO nanorod film was observed for all growth times studied. The ZnO nanorods with ZnO microflower top layers were applied as photoelectrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells. Higher photocurrent densities and photovoltages were observed with longer nanorod growth times. The high performance of the dye-sensitized solar cells might be associated to the combination of ZnO nanorods and microflowers in the same photoelectrode.  相似文献
