According to some recent research, Americans hold a great deal of misinformation about important political issues. However, such investigations treat incorrect answers to quiz questions measuring knowledge as evidence of misinformation. This study instead defines misperceptions as incorrect answers that respondents are confident are correct. Two surveys of representative samples of American adults on the Affordable Care Act reveal that most people were uncertain about the provisions in the law. Confidently held incorrect beliefs were far less common than incorrect answers. Misperceptions were most prevalent on aspects of the law on which elites prominently and persistently made incorrect claims. Furthermore, although Americans appear to have learned about the law between 2010 and 2012, misperceptions on many provisions of the law persisted.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to analyze moving front dynamics of ions and holes in a planar, mixed ionic‐electronic conducting polymer film. As cations invade the film, holes evacuate; thus, an ionic current is converted to an electronic signal. Recent experiments show that the location of the advancing ion front increases as the square‐root of time, a scaling typically associated with diffusive transport, which is surprising given the large driving voltages utilized. Ionic and electronic transport is modeled via the drift‐diffusion equations. A similarity transformation reduces the governing partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations that are solved numerically. The similarity transformation elucidates the origin of the square‐root‐of‐time front scaling. The similarity solution is then compared to the numerical solution of the full drift‐diffusion equations, finding excellent agreement. When compared with experimental data, our model captures the front location; however, qualitative differences between the ion profiles are observed. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 1447–1454, 2015  相似文献

Deep wellbores/boreholes are generally drilled into rocks for oil and gas exploration, monitoring of tectonic stresses purposes. Wellbore and tunnel in depth are generally in true triaxial stress state, even if the ground is under axisymmetric loading condition. Stability of such wellbores is very critical and collapse of wellbore must be avoided. Mogi-Coulomb failure criterion is a better representation of rock strength under true triaxial condition. In this paper, an analytical solution is proposed using Mogi-Coulomb failure criterion. The solution is obtained for rock mass exhibiting elastic-perfectly plastic or elastic-brittle-plastic behaviour considering in-plane isotropic stresses. The proposed solution is then compared with exact analytical solution for incompressible material and experimental results of thick-wall cylinder. It is shown that the results obtained by the proposed analytical solution are in good agreement with the experimental results and exact analytical solution. A reduction of about 13%–20% in plastic zone from the proposed closed-form solution is observed, as compared to the results from the finite element method (FEM) based Mohr-Coulomb criterion. Next, the influences of various parameters such as Poisson's ratio, internal pressure (mud weight), dilation angle, and out-of-plane stress are studied in terms of stress and deformation responses of wellbore. The results of the parametric study reveal that variation in the out-of-plane stress has an inverse relation with the radius of plastic zone. Poisson's ratio does not have an appreciable influence on the tangential stress, radial stress and radial deformation. Dilation angle has a direct relation with the deformation. Internal pressure is found to have an inverse relation with the radial deformation and the radius of plastic zone.  相似文献

Nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization of a tailor-made acrylate carrying a 1,2,3-triazole group with an undecanoyl spacer affords a well-defined (Mn = 7860 g mol−1 and D = 1.39) neutral polyacrylate precursor. A series of 1,2,3-triazolium-based poly(ionic liquid)s (TPILs) is then obtained by straightforward quaternization of the 1,2,3-triazole groups with methyl iodide and subsequent anion metathesis reactions. Among the prepared materials, TPIL with bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide anion exhibits low glass transition temperature (Tg = −40 °C), high thermal stability (Td10 = 325 °C) and anhydrous ionic conductivity of 4 × 10−6 S cm−1 at 30 °C, as measured by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and broadband dielectric spectroscopy, respectively.  相似文献

An optimum nanostructure and pore size of catalyst supports is very important in achieving high catalytic performances. In this instance, we evaluated the effects of various carbon nanostructures on the catalytic performances of carbon‐supported platinum (Pt/C) electrocatalysts experimentally and numerically. The Pt/C catalysts were prepared using a hybrid method involving the preparation of dense, hollow, and porous nanostructured carbon particle via aerosol spray pyrolysis followed by microwave‐assisted Pt deposition. Electrochemical characterization of the catalysts showed that the porous Pt/C catalyst gave the best performance; its electrochemical surface area was much higher, more than twice than those of hollow or dense Pt/C. The effects of pore size on electrocatalysis were also studied. The results showed the importance of a balance between mesopores and macropores for effective catalysis with a high charge transfer rate. In process and manufacturing industries, alarm systems play a critical role in ensuring safe and efficient operations. The objective of a standard industrial alarm system is to detect undesirable deviations in process variables as soon as they occur. Fault detection and diagnosis systems often need to be alerted by an industrial alarm system; however, poorly designed alarms often lead to alarm flooding and other undesirable events. In this article, we consider the problem of industrial alarm design for processes represented by stochastic nonlinear time‐series models. The alarm design for such complex processes faces three important challenges: (1) industrial processes exhibit highly nonlinear behavior; (2) state variables are not precisely known (modeling error); and (3) process signals are not necessarily Gaussian, stationary or uncorrelated. In this article, a procedure for designing a delay timer alarm configuration is proposed for the process states. The proposed design is based on minimization of the rate of false and missed alarm rates—two common performance measures for alarm systems. To ensure the alarm design is robust to any non‐stationary process behavior, an expected‐case and a worst‐case alarm designs are proposed. The reaction engineering approach (REA) is examined here to investigate its suitability as the local evaporation rate to be used in multiphase drying. For this purpose, REA is first implemented to model the convective drying of materials with various thicknesses. The relative activation energy, as the fingerprint of REA, generated from one size of a material is used to model the convective drying of the same material with different thicknesses. Because the results indicate that REA parameters can model the drying of materials with various thicknesses, REA can be scaled down to describe the local evaporation rate (at the microscale as affected by local composition and temperature). The relative activation energy is used to describe the global drying rate in modeling the local evaporation rate. REA is combined with a system of equations of conservation of heat and mass transfer in order to yield the spatial reaction engineering approach (S-REA) as a nonequilibrium multiphase drying model. By using S-REA, the spatial profiles of moisture content, concentration of water vapor, temperature, and local evaporation rate can be generated, which can assist in comprehending the transport phenomena.  相似文献
