Improved microbiological procedure for determining bacitracin in premixes and mixed feeds

An improved microbiological procedure is presented for determining bacitracin in premixes and mixed feeds. Premixes are extracted with acidic 50% aqueous methanol, and mixed feeds are extracted with 50% dimethylformamide after washing with acetone to remove fats and pigments. Extracts are diluted with pH 6.0 phosphate buffer and assayed by using a 2-point assay system with Micrococcus flavus as the test organism. The simpler extraction coupled with the 2-point assay system measured bacitracin levels as low as 10 g/ton. Accuracy and repeatability of the 2-point system were at least equivalent to those for official AOAC methods.     

Composite sampling

In sampling certain types of materials, such as bags of fertilizer, or subsampling large quantities of water, as might be done in investigating the density of plankton in certain environmental situations, it is customary to composite the samples. That is, several samples are drawn, mixed into a composite sample, and a sample taken from the composite is then used to determine relevant characteristics of the population. In this paper the results of Brown and Fisher [1972] are extended to more complex situations (e.g., more than one variance component present).     

Operant autonomic conditioning and rod-and-frame test performance

Forty subjects were administered the portable rod-and-frame test (RFT) before and after operant autonomic conditioning training or control experiences. Ten subjects were assigned to each of four groups: a heart rate conditioning group; a false heart rate feedback group; a galvanic skin-response conditioning group; and a control group. Half of the subjects in the three experimental groups were informed of the response-reinforcement contingencies, and half were not informed. Informed subjects in the conditioning groups exhibited significantly lower portable RFT scores after conditioning. The results suggest that awareness of and control over autonomic functioning may be an important determinant of RFT performance.     

The effect of sowing date and growth stage on the essential oil composition of three types of parsley (Petroselinum crispum)

Essential oils obtained by simultaneous distillation–extraction (SDE) from leaves, petioles and roots of three types of parsley (turnip‐rooted, plain leaf and curly leaf type), sown on three different dates, were analysed by GC‐MS (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) analysis. Parsley plants were found to produce mainly β‐phellandrene, 1,3,8‐p‐menthatriene, α‐,p‐dimethylstyrene, myristicin, β‐myrcene and apiole. In some cases α‐ and β‐pinene were also found, whereas β‐elemene was detected, especially in the curly leaf type. The growth stage, plant tissue and date of sowing, as well as the climate conditions, all had a significant effect on the essential oil composition by altering the ratio of the above substances. AIDS-associated renal tuberculosis

In order to study the prevalence and the clinical features of renal tuberculosis associated with AIDS, we studied the renal tissue of the necropsies made in 46 AIDS patients under light microscopy. We found renal tuberculous granuloma in 11 (23%) patients (in 3 without previous diagnosis of renal or extrarenal tuberculosis) and only 4 of them presented moderate hematuria or pyuria sterile. As subclinical renal tuberculosis was frequent in this group of AIDS patients, the urine culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis may be useful for diagnosing tuberculosis in AIDS patients.     

A comparison of bond strengths of complete crowns using two types of cements and three cleaning agents

In the past, biomechanical investigations on the dorsal pelvic ring have generally been performed on a small number of cadaveric pelves in various non-standardized procedures. Significant differences in stability between different internal fixation methods of unstable pelvic ring fractures were not found. The experimental design presented here was based as closely as possible on the physiological loading of the pelvis in one-leg stance. This method made it possible to carry out standardized, reproducible tests on different osteosytheses of the sacroiliac joint. Furthermore, the suitability of artificial bones for such investigations can be assessed on the basis of a larger number of similar experiments on artificial and human pelves and the number of human pelves required for such studies could be reduced.     

Coronary artery fistula after cardiac transplantation

A cardiac transplant recipient with multiple coronary artery fistulae draining into the right ventricle is described. These fistulae presumably resulted from repeated endomyocardial biopsies. The diagnosis of coronary artery fistulae was made at the annual coronary arteriography. The magnitude of the shunt remained small over eight years of follow-up.
