Trends in long-term chemistry data are presented for 37 acidified upland streams and lochs, located in four areas (A, B, C and D) across Scotland, to provide a comparison between recovery rates of moorland catchments and forest catchments at different stages of the management cycle. For all sites, non-marine sulfate (nm-SO(4)) showed a significant decline in annual median concentrations, the greatest decline being in streams draining felled catchments, which showed a 50% greater decline than catchments with moorland or young, aggrading forests. A similar pattern was found for chloride (Cl) concentrations in Area C, which reflected the reduced interception of sea-salt aerosols following clearfelling. However, high elevation moorland sites in Area D also revealed significant declines in Cl while trends in aggrading forest sites in this area were insignificant. Alkalinity (ALK) and pH increased more at sites where felling had taken place than at moorland or young forest sites while aggrading forest catchments appeared to be most resistant to changes in pH and ALK. Associated with these acid-base changes was a corresponding decline in labile aluminium (Al-L) concentrations. The pattern of nitrate (NO(3)) change was especially affected by the timing of felling in forested catchments. Large negative trends in NO(3) at stream sites were associated with felling during the early part of the study period. This downward trend was further enhanced as NO(3) concentrations fell below pre-felling levels as the second rotation crop became established. Few forest sites showed significant increases in NO(3) due to felling in the latter part of the study period. Most moorland loch sites showed a small but significant increase in NO(3,) probably in response to similar increases in N deposition and/or climatic impacts. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) increased significantly at both forest and moorland sites, however, the extent of these increasing trends appeared to be positively correlated with absolute DOC concentrations. Despite the complex response of streams and lochs during the various stages of the forest cycle, especially for NO(3), both forest and moorland catchments showed generally similar and rapid responses to reductions in S deposition. Nevertheless, forested sites are still more acid and have higher concentrations of toxic forms of Al than moorland sites. Although the proposed emission reductions in Europe are likely to result in a continuing decline in S and N loadings to catchments, the continuing policy of planting second rotation forests in these acidified catchments may, in the long-term, delay or halt chemical and biological recovery. However, in the short-term, any increase in the uptake of N deposition by aggrading forests should help to counteract the acidifying effects of a small increase in the interception of S and N compounds.  相似文献

The germ line and soma together maintain genetic lineages from generation to generation: the germ line passes genetic information between generations; the soma is the vehicle for germ line transmission, and is shaped by natural selection. The germ line and somatic lineages arise simultaneously in early embryos, but how their development is related depends on how primordial germ cells (PGC) are specified. PGCs are specified by one of two means. Epigenesis describes the induction of PGCs from pluripotent cells by signals from surrounding somatic tissues. In contrast, PGCs in many species are specified cell-autonomously by maternally derived molecules, known as germ plasm, and this is called preformation. Germ plasm inhibits signaling to PGCs; thus, they are specified cell-autonomously. Germ plasm evolved independently in many animal lineages, suggesting convergent evolution, and therefore it would be expected to convey a selective advantage. But, what this is remains unknown. We propose that the selective advantage that drives the emergence of germ plasm in vertebrates is the disengagement of germ line specification from somatic influences. This liberates the evolution of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) that govern somatic development, and thereby enhances species evolvability, a well-recognized selective advantage. We cite recent evidence showing that frog embryos, which contain germ plasm, have modified GRNs that are not conserved in axolotls, which represent more basal amphibians and employ epigenesis. We also present the correlation of preformation with enhanced species radiations, and we discuss the mutually exclusive trajectories influenced by germ plasm or pluripotency, which shaped chordate evolution.  相似文献

Triglycerides were isolated from the liver, plasma, kidney, adrenals, testes (one animal), heart, pancreas, rumen wall, muscle, intestines, and perineal, intestinal and subscapular adipose tissues from four adult sheep. The fatty acid composition of each was determined by gas chromatography. The distribution of fatty acids among positions 1, 2 and 3 of the glycerol moeity of the triglycerides was determined by a stereospecific analysis procedure. In the adipose tissue triglycerides, saturated components predominated in position 1 and unsaturated C18 fatty acids were found largely in position 2; position 3 was occupied mainly by C18 saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The highest concentration of trans- fatty acids was in position 3. The triglycerides obtained from the other tissues had similar structures to this except that in some, in particular plasma and liver triglycerides, there was a comparatively high concentration of palmitic acid in position 2.  相似文献

Test‐suite reduction techniques attempt to reduce the costs of saving and reusing test cases during software maintenance by eliminating redundant test cases from test suites. A potential drawback of these techniques is that reducing the size of a test suite might reduce its ability to reveal faults in the software. Previous studies have suggested that test‐suite reduction techniques can reduce test‐suite size without significantly reducing the fault‐detection capabilities of test suites. These studies, however, involved particular programs and types of test suites, and to begin to generalize their results, further work is needed. This paper reports on the design and execution of additional studies, examining the costs and benefits of test‐suite reduction, and the factors that influence these costs and benefits. In contrast to previous studies, results of these studies reveal that the fault‐detection capabilities of test suites can be severely compromised by test‐suite reduction. This communication reports on a versatile and substrate-agnostic method to tune the surface chemistry of conducting polymers with the aim of bridging the chemical mismatch between bioelectronic devices and biological systems. As a proof of concept, the surface of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is grafted with a short-chain oligoethylene glycol monolayer to favor the formation of cell-derived supported lipid bilayers (SLBs). This method is tuned to optimize the affinity between the supported lipid bilayer and the conducting polymer, leading to significant improvements in bilayer quality and therefore electronic readouts. To validate the impact of surface functionalization on the system's ability to transduce biological phenomena into quantifiable electronic signals, the activity of a virus commonly used as a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2 (mouse hepatitis virus) is monitored with and without surface treatment. The functionalized devices exhibit significant improvements in electronic output, stemming from the improved SLB quality, therefore strengthening the case for the use of such an approach in membrane-on-a-chip systems.  相似文献

We have conducted classical molecular dynamics simulations of three compositions of yttrium-containing phosphate glasses, to study the atomic structure around yttrium, and understand how yttrium incorporation will affect the glass dissolution rate. The Y-O bond length is about 2.2 Å and the coordination number is 6.3. To avoid effects due to different network connectivities, our compositions were chosen to keep the Qn distribution and network connectivity roughly constant, which was confirmed through direct calculation. For these compositions, the structure of the phosphate network is comprised of finite-length chains of PO4 tetrahedra bound to the network modifiers. We showed that yttrium bonds to 4.2-4.3 of these chains, compared to 3.8 for calcium, and 3.1-3.2 for sodium. This implies that yttrium will bond more parts of the glass to the same place, and therefore, that yttrium incorporation will strengthen phosphate glass against dissolution, making it potentially suitable for radiotherapy applications where a durable glass is required.  相似文献
