Several implant systems may be used to fuse the skull to the upper cervical spine (occipitocervical fusion). Current biomechanical evaluation is restricted by the limitations of human cadaveric specimens. This paper describes the design and validation of a synthetic testing model of the occipital bone. Data from thickness measurement and pull-out strength testing of a series of human cadaveric skulls was used in the design of a high-density rigid polyurethane foam model. The synthetic occipital model demonstrated repeatable and consistent morphological and biomechanical properties. Irgarol 1051 is a recent herbicidal compound, inhibitor of photosynthesis, used in antifouling paints. This toxic is persistent in aquatic environments, with low abiotic and biotic degradation, highly phytotoxic, and has already been detected in estuaries and coastal areas, with suspected negative impacts on non-target organisms (aquatic plants and algae). We measured the toxicity of Irgarol 1051 to macrophytes and phytoplankton from Lake Geneva (between Switzerland and France) by determining chlorophyll fluorescence yield, and phytoplankton primary production. Long-term toxicity for phytoplankton was estimated in a microcosm study, and growth inhibition tests were performed with isolated algal strains. The concentration of Irgarol 1051 was analysed in the water, and the most polluted site showed a higher level (up to 135 ng/L) than the lowest observed effect concentration for phytoplankton (8-80 ng/L), while the macrophytes appeared to be more tolerant to Irgarol 1051 in short-term tests. This study describes for the first time the spatial and temporal distribution of a growth factor and its receptors in uteri and conceptuses of a marsupial species during the peri-gastrulation period. Uteri (gravid and non-gravid) and blastocysts from 40 female stripe-faced dunnarts (Sminthopsis macroura) were collected over the peri-gastrula period (days 6.0-8.5) and stained immunohistochemically for transforming growth factor beta2 (TGFbeta2) and its receptors, TbetaRI and TbetaRII, to determine possible roles for TGFbeta2 in marsupial embryonic development. The events that occurred during the period examined included the appearance and proliferation of hypoblast and mesoderm, primitive streak and node formation, and early neurulation. Differences in TGFbeta2 quantities between gravid and non-gravid uteri reflect differences in uterine morphology, indicating a role for TGFbeta2 in endometrial remodelling. In blastocysts, large quantities of all three proteins in the trophectoderm during the node stage coincide with both blastocyst expansion before implantation and the appearance of multinucleated cells, indicating that TGFbeta2 plays a role in conceptus elongation and trophectoderm differentiation. In contrast, lack of TbetaRII in blastocysts during hypoblast formation and proliferation negates any role for TGFbeta2 in these processes, as both receptors are required for a response to TGFbeta2. High concentrations of TGFbeta2 but low concentrations of TbetaRII in blastocysts during early primitive streak formation indicate that paracrinal embryo-maternal signalling may be occurring, as blastocysts cannot respond to TGFbeta2 at this stage, but uteri could. The purpose of this study was to develop a new method for analytically generating three-dimensional isocomfort workspace for the upper extremities using the robot kinematics. Subjective perceived discomfort scores in varying postures for manipulating four types of controls were used. Fifteen healthy male subjects participated in the experiment. The subjects were asked to hold the given postures manipulating controls for 60 s in the seated position, and to rate their perceived discomfort during the following rest of 60 s using the magnitude estimation. Postures of the upper extremities set by shoulder and elbow motions, types of controls, and left right hand were selected as experimental variables, in which the L32 orthogonal array was adopted. The results showed that shoulder flexion and adduction-abduction, elbow flexion, and types of controls significantly affected perceived discomfort for postures operating controls, but hand used for operating controls did not. Depending upon the types of controls, four regression models predicting perceived discomfort were presented. Using the models, a sweeping algorithm to generate three-dimensional isocomfort workspace was developed, in which the robot kinematics was employed to describe the translational relationships between the upper arm and the lower arm/hand. Contrary to common belief, back pain amongst young people is a frequent phenomenon. Epidemiological studies have found high prevalence rates of back pain amongst schoolchildren. The investigation reported here aims to validate children's self-reporting and the observation of sitting postures to establish the intensity, duration and frequency of exposure in the classroom. The sitting postures of 18 children were recorded using three methods, the portable ergonomic observation method (PEO), video analysis and self-report. The three methods were compared. PEO was significantly correlated with video analysis of the sitting postures after development of the method. Self-report was not significantly correlated with video analysis of the sitting postures. Therefore PEO was selected as the main observation tool in further analysis of children's sitting posture in schools in South-East England as part of a large research programme investigating back pain amongst schoolchildren. 相似文献

The effectiveness of a headway measuring and recording device was evaluated in terms of its ability to increase drivers' car-following distance. Forty-three drivers first drove for approximately 3 weeks without headway feedback and then for approximately 3 more weeks with immediate time headway (THW) feedback. Whenever the THW decreased to 1.2 s or less a red warning light came on, and whenever the THW decreased further to 0.8 s or less a buzzer was also sounded. The results showed that prior to receiving THW information,drivers drove at shorter headways than after they received that information. The effect of the feedback was to reduce the time spent in short headways (< or = 0.8 s) by approximately 25% (from 20% to 15% of the time) and to increase the time spent in safer longer headways (>1.2 s) by approximately 20% (from 57% to 65% of the time). The effect was similar for younger and older drivers, for male and female drivers, for urban and highway speeds, and for daytime and nighttime driving. An immediate application of these findings is to install headway feedback displays to drivers so that they may maintain safer headway distances than they do currently. 相似文献
