Theoretical and experimental investigations of molecular migration and diffusion kinetics of organic esters into tetrafluoroethylene/propylene copolymer membranes

A theoretical analysis of the experimental results on the migration and diffusion kinetics of methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, n-propyl acetate, n-butyl acetate and iso-amylacetate into tetrafluoroethylene/propylene copolymer membranes has been made. Diffusion and permeability coefficients have been calculated from Fick's equation. The concentration profiles of the liquids have been calculated from a solution of Fick's equation as well as using an empirical relation for the esters into the varying penetration depths of the membranes at different time intervals. The diffusion coefficients show a systematic decrease with increasing size of esters and the results are discussed in terms of the membrane-solvent interactions.     

A motivational interviewing and common factors approach to change in working with alcohol use and abuse in college students.

The authors describe an approach for intervening with college students who present for self-referred or mandated treatment for alcohol or other drug issues. The authors offer a conceptual framework for working with such clients that is influenced by the evidence-based motivational interviewing literature and the evidence-based common factors approach to psychotherapy in general. Implications for practice are elaborated on and exemplified through a case study that includes motivational interviewing's guiding principles. Comparison of interpolation and extrapolation methods with a method using multiresolution wavelet transform in dosimetric experiments

International and national organizations have recommended limits for the protection of mobile phone users and standards are going to be established to certify the compliance of mobile phone with these limits. To ensure this conformity, numerical and experimental dosimetric analyses are essential to evaluate the electric field in the user’s head. The use of interpolation and extrapolation is then necessary to evaluate the electric fields components which cannot be measured. In this paper, an interpolation/extrapolation method using wavelets is presented. This method is applied to one, two, and three-dimensional sampled data from dosimetric experiments and compared with other interpolation/extrapolation techniques.     

Evaluation of integrated harvesting systems in pine stands of the southern United States

We investigated the addition of a small chipper to mechanized, tree-length harvesting systems to produce biomass chips from tops, limbs, and underbrush in planted southern pine stands. The systems were examined in three replicated studies involving clearcuts and thinnings in 2006 and 2007 in the US state of Georgia. Biomass from understory stems ranged from 8.3 to 59.0 green tonnes per hectare in the three studies. Chipping the limbs and tops of merchantable stems did not reduce the production of roundwood, but only produced 7–11 t ha^?1 of biomass. Harvesting understory biomass in addition to chipping limbs and tops worked well with clearcut harvests, but reduced roundwood production by 50% in thinnings. Small chippers added to roundwood operations appear to have limited potential in current market conditions, but should become a viable option as stronger markets for biomass chips develop.     

Organizational consulting in the local newsroom.

The local TV newsroom is a relatively high-profile community organization that has received little formal attention to date in the organizational literature. A number of challenging trends and issues have emerged for this type of organization, and the challenges appear to have a national breadth. Local TV news organizations are experiencing the seemingly conflicting demands of a mission historically rooted in community service and civic responsibility now moving toward a mission increasingly driven by corporate profit motives. The rapidly evolving and demanding world of local TV news is briefly reviewed here, with a focus on the potential value of organizational consultants and organizational development in managing increasing change demands in these settings. Stoichiometry of Slag Hydration with Calcium Hydroxide

The stoichiometry of the reaction between ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) having an empirical formula of C_7.88S_7.39M₃A and calcium hydroxide (CH) was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine the slag consumption as well as the Ca/Si ratio in calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H) products. A tentative stoichiometric ratio of 2.6 mol of CH consumed per mole of slag reacted was determined using two methods. By combining consumption data determined separately for slag and CH a molar stoichiometry of 2.79 was found. Similarly, by directly determining the Ca/Si ratio in the C-S-H gel product, a range for the molar stoichiometry between 1.65 and 3.42 was found. Finally, a comparison of the stoichiometry of the slag/CH reaction was made with slag/portland cement hydration. The basic features of both appear similar. In the C-S-H gel around slag grains, a calcium-to-silica ratio of 1.3 to 1.4 was found for both slag/CH and slag/cement systems.     

TPV cell IV curve testing with varying black body emission temperatures, intensities, and cell temperatures

A TPV GaSb cell was tested as part of the first effort to establish a standard method of characterizing such cells. Cell current/voltage (IV) curves were measured at different cell temperatures using black body radiation at various emission temperatures and intensities. The results of the effects on performance are briefly analyzed and include temperature coefficients, voltage/intensity coefficient, and response to spectral shift.     

Chance encounters: Unintentional therapist disclosure.

Explores how chance encounters influence the interpersonal relationship for both patient and therapist. Both patient and therapist experiences of the therapist's subjectivity may become accessible and available for analysis. Such encounters may reveal aspects of the interpersonal matrix that were previously defended against. In the chance meeting, the patient has the opportunity to experience the therapist as a separate person or as an extension of the self, as an object available for idealization or devaluation, or as a subject in his or her own right. Likewise, the therapist has the opportunity to experience him- or herself in ways that may be either concordant or discordant with the interpersonal relationship in the consulting room, bringing into focus new aspects of the interpersonal matrix.
