医学上的很多疾病都是我们无意识地进入脱水状态所致,因为身体最终会把缺水这一局面,通过某种奇特而确凿的方式显示出来。例如我们已谈过的胃灼热、胃痛等。以下疼痛也与缺水有关。

关节脱水的后果如果关节脱水,软骨细胞就会处于强烈的摩擦状态,从而使它们迅速死亡,而死亡的细胞需要得到替换。软骨使用过度,并且处在修复状态,它就可能受到损伤,这一区域的感应器就会发出强烈的信号,表达它们急需修理的愿望。

This reply is to the comment by C. G. Ribbing [Appl. Opt. 33, 8055 (1994)] on our paper on IR optical constants of polycrystalline boron nitride.     

Fiber-linked telescope array: description and laboratory tests of a two-channel prototype

We present a complete two-telescope version of a fiber-linked coherent array that is meant to be used for mounting on the dish of a radio telescope. This was built with 20-cm amateur telescopes and includes three different servo subsystems for guiding, nulling of the air path difference, and fiber length control. Laboratory tests of the fully integrated system in front of a star simulator are described.     

Simple laser velocimeter that uses photoconductive semiconductors to measure optical frequency differences

The dc photocurrents generated by steady-state moving space-charge fields inside photoconductive semiconductors containing deep level donors and traps can be used to determine the relative frequency differences between the two interfering optical fields that establish the space-charge fields. A simple laser velocimeter that uses a semi-insulating GaAs:Cr sample to detect the Doppler frequency shift between two laser beams is demonstrated.     

Fiducial markers for increasing the versatility of optical correlation in the measurement of faults on integrated-circuit wafers

A microscope-coherent optical processor is used for the measurement of the registration errors on integrated-circuit wafers. The measurements are obtained from the optical correlation of wafers with reference wafer patterns by use of matched spatial filters. Previously, the intricate pattern of the active circuit area of wafers has been used in the correlation process, and a new matched spatial filter had to be created for each different integrated circuit. Here, the results of using comparatively plain fiducial markers on a wafer for the registration-error measurement are presented, and these show that the measurements can be made independent of the design of the integrated circuit while maintaining the advantages and accuracy of the optical correlation technique.     

Effects of hypergravity on the cell shape and on the organization of cytoskeleton and extracelluar matrix molecules of in vitro human dermal fibroblasts

In vitro human dermal fibroblasts were submitted to normal gravity (1 g) or to chronic hypergravity ranging from 2 to 20 g for 8 days. Changes only appeared above 15 g. The majority of 20 g-subjected cells showed fine filipods in the shape of a star whereas most control cells had rounded shapes and spread by forming lamellipodia. Indirect immunofluorescence staining of vinculin, alpha-actinin and actin stress fibers showed changes of the arrangement anchoring points of stress fibers under hypergravity. Tubulin staining showed that the centrosomal material generally located above the nucleus in control cells had migrated to the nucleus side in 20 g-exposed cells. After 8 d of culture under 20 g hypergravity the thickness of fibronectin network seemed to be increased and bundles of fibrils appeared linking ordered arrays of fibers. The fibrils of collagen I formed better delimited and thicker bundles of fibers. We may assume that 20 g hypergravity can induce changes in fibroblast cell shape, migration way, and anchorage leading to a reorganization of extracellular matrix without concomitant change of cell proliferation.     

Comfort of personal protective equipment

The degree of comfort of personal protective equipment (PPE) was investigated in an automobile encapsulating plant. Up to 96.2% of employees used one or a combination of PPE. Only 8% of the workers felt their respirators were comfortable, 30% tolerated their respirators, and 62% rated them as uncomfortable. The percentage of employees who rated their PPE (other than a respirator) as comfortable ranged from 32 to 52%. For comfort factor, coveralls/aprons rated 52%, safety glasses 51%, rubber gloves 42%, and hearing protectors 36%. PPE was tolerable (just acceptable) for about 30% of the employees. To increase the effectiveness and safety of PPE, the human-factor aspects of PPE design should be emphasized more and quality improvement should cover the wearability of PPE.     

Coherent addition of adjacent lasers by forked eigenstate operation

Forked laser eigenstates are shown to provide a powerful tool both to phase lock spatially separated laser oscillators and to add their powers coherently into a TEM(00) output beam. Coherent addition of the powers extracted from two fiber-coupled diode-pumped Nd:YAG channels is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. Pure TEM(00) oscillation is obtained with a 20% optical-to-optical conversion efficiency. The coherence of the two-propagation-axis laser is proved, and single-frequency operation is demonstrated. The scalability of the scheme is discussed.
