Predicting recidivism with the Psychopathy Checklist: Are factor score composites really necessary?

In two previous studies on general and violent recidivism (Walters & Heilbrun, 2010; Walters, Knight, Grann, & Dahle, 2008), the summed composite antisocial facet of the Psychopathy Checklist displayed incremental validity relative to the other 3 facets (interpersonal, affective, lifestyle), whereas the other 3 facets generally failed to demonstrate incremental validity relative to the antisocial facet. Because summed composite scores do not account for ordinal item distributions, the 6 Walters et al. (2008) samples were reanalyzed with factor score composites derived from a 4-factor confirmatory factor analysis. The results, however, showed little change from what had been obtained earlier with summed composite scores. Two additional samples not previously included in any incremental validity analyses of the Psychopathy Checklist evidenced a 3-factor structure, with the lifestyle and antisocial facets merged into a single factor. This single factor displayed incremental validity relative to the interpersonal and affective facets, but the reverse was not true regardless of whether summed composite scores or factor score composites were used. A comparison of zero-order correlations from all 8 samples revealed that the antisocial summed composite score predicted significantly better than the summed composite scores for the other 3 facets and that a superordinate factor failed to improve on the performance of either the antisocial summed composite score or the antisocial factor score composite. Immunologic Effects of Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy in Dogs with Spontaneous Tumors and the Impact of Intratumoral OX40/TLR Agonist Immunotherapy

Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is known to induce important immunologic changes within the tumor microenvironment (TME). However, little is known regarding the early immune responses within the TME in the first few weeks following SBRT. Therefore, we used the canine spontaneous tumor model to investigate TME responses to SBRT, and how local injection of immune modulatory antibodies to OX40 and TLR 3/9 agonists might modify those responses. Pet dogs with spontaneous cancers (melanoma, carcinoma, sarcoma, n = 6 per group) were randomized to treatment with either SBRT or SBRT combined with local immunotherapy. Serial tumor biopsies and serum samples were analyzed for immunologic responses. SBRT alone resulted at two weeks after treatment in increased tumor densities of CD3+ T cells, FoxP3+ Tregs, and CD204+ macrophages, and increased expression of genes associated with immunosuppression. The addition of OX40/TLR3/9 immunotherapy to SBRT resulted in local depletion of Tregs and tumor macrophages and reduced Treg-associated gene expression (FoxP3), suppressed macrophage-associated gene expression (IL-8), and suppressed exhausted T cell-associated gene expression (CTLA4). Increased concentrations of IL-7, IL-15, and IL-18 were observed in serum of animals treated with SBRT and immunotherapy, compared to animals treated with SBRT. A paradoxical decrease in the density of effector CD3+ T cells was observed in tumor tissues that received combined SBRT and immunotherapy as compared to animals treated with SBRT only. In summary, these results obtained in a spontaneous large animal cancer model indicate that addition of OX40/TLR immunotherapy to SBRT modifies important immunological effects both locally and systemically.     

Absence of sterol biosynthesis in oyster tissue culture

An oyster heart tissue culture was used to investigate the ability of the American oyster (Crassostrea virginica) to synthesize sterols from [¹⁴C]acetate. Lipids were extracted from cultured oyster heart cells and no label was found in the purified fatty acid fraction, 90% of which was located in the saturated and monounsaturated fractions. Although these results cannot rule out the possibility of sterol synthesis in other oyster tissues, this and previous evidence are in support of the hypothesis that the American oyster is unable to synthesize sterols.     

Sterol composition of the phytolaccaceae and closely related families

Total sterols were analyzed from 28 species of Phytolaccaceae and from 29 species of closely related families—Basellaceae, Portulaccaceae, Molluginaceae, and Stegnospermataceae. Eighteen of twenty-eight species of Phytolaccaceae contained dominant Δ⁷-sterols while six species had dominant Δ⁵-sterols. Three species had dominant Δ⁰-sterols. Sterol composition strongly reflected taxonomic position. Nineteen of twenty-nine species from Basellaceae, Portulaccaceae, Molluginaceae, and Stegnospermataceae contained dominant Δ⁷-sterols while ten species contained dominant Δ⁵-sterols. Until recently Δ⁷-sterols were considered rare in higher plants. It appears that a large number of species in the order Caryophyllales contain primarily Δ⁷-sterols.     

Selectively fluorinated analogs reveal differential olfactory reception and inactivation of green leaf volatiles in insects

The role of the alkyl terminus of green leaf volatile (GLV) molecules in olfactory reception and inactivation was examined in three diverse insect species: the beet armyworm,Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera); the Colorado potato beetle,Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera); and the desert locust,Schistocerca gregaria (Orthoptera), using selectively fluorinated analogs of GLVs and electroantennograms (EAGs). When only the magnitude of the depolarization of the EAG is considered (a measure of reception), the order of effectiveness was 1-hexanol (6:OH)=(Z)-3-6:OH > 5,5,6,6,6-pentafluoro-(Z)-3-6:OH =5,5-difluoro-(Z)-3-6:OH 5,5,6,6,6-pentafluoro-6: OH. Percent recovery of the EAG (a measure of inactivation) was greater for the pentafluoro-(Z)-3-6: OH analog than for the difluoro-(Z)-3-6: OH analog. Our results show that the alkyl end of GLV molecules plays an important role not only in reception, but also inactivation processes in insect olfaction. Kinetic study of the depolymerization of Bruceton coal

The depolymerization of coals using phenol and p-toluenesulphonic acid, was studied.In this reaction the acid ‘catalyst’ is destroyed, its rate of destruction being different for different coals. A kinetic study of the depolymerization of Bruceton coal under conditions of gradually declining acid concentration has been carried out. Parameters which were monitored include the weight increase of the products, the solubility of the products in benzene-ethanol, the extractability of the products into pyridine, the amount of colloidal material present in the pyridine-extractables, and the molecular weight distribution of the pyridine-soluble products. Under the conditions used, the reaction produces primarily polymeric products from coal. The molecular weight distribution of the pyridine-soluble material seems to undergo no major changes with reaction time.     

Water quality of Scottish rivers: spatial and temporal trends

The Harmonised Monitoring Scheme (HMS) was initiated in 1974 and represents the best-organised source of temporal and spatial data describing water quality for the major mainland rivers of Scotland, England and Wales. This paper presents the first detailed analysis of HMS data for Scotland, and identifies temporal changes in water quality from 1974 to 1995. From a concomitant analysis of catchment land cover characteristics, water quality indices have been linked with potential 'drivers' of change, influencing both point and diffuse sources. Nitrate concentrations between rivers are highly correlated with the amount of arable land, and relationships exist between grassland cover, orthphosphate-P and suspended solids concentrations. Similarly, urban catchments are highly correlated with ammonium-N, orthophosphate-P and suspended solids. Spatial and temporal trends in water quality for the rivers of Scotland are discussed.     

Developments in the continuous galvanizing of steel

The performance history of galvanized steels, particularly in the automotive industry, has heightened demand for both hot-dip galvanized and electrogalvanized products. Such marketability has led to the commissioning of several new galvanizing lines in recent years. Still, for this timehonored coating process to remain competitive, researchers are investigating methods to improve surface appearance, coating uniformity, corrosion resistance and cost effectiveness.     

3D Active Edge Silicon Detector Tests With 120 GeV Muons

3D detectors with electrodes penetrating through the silicon wafer and covering the edges were tested in the SPS beam line X5 at CERN in autumn 2003. Detector parameters including efficiency, signal-to-noise ratio, and edge sensitivity were measured using a silicon telescope as a reference system. The measured sensitive width and the known silicon width were equal within less than 10 mum.
