Anaerobic methane oxidation and aerobic methane production in an east African great lake (Lake Kivu) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

We investigated CH4 oxidation in the water column of Lake Kivu, a deep meromictic tropical lake with CH4-rich anoxic deep waters. Depth profiles of dissolved gases (CH4 and N2O) and a diversity of potential electron acceptors for anaerobic CH4 oxidation (NO3?, SO42?, Fe and Mn oxides) were determined during six field campaigns between June 2011 and August 2014. Denitrification measurements based on stable isotope labelling experiments were performed twice. In addition, we quantified aerobic and anaerobic CH4 oxidation, NO3? and SO42? consumption rates, with and without the presence of an inhibitor of SO42?-reducing bacteria activity. Aerobic CH4 production was also measured in parallel incubations with the addition of an inhibitor of aerobic CH4 oxidation. The maximum aerobic and anaerobic CH4 oxidation rates were estimated to be 27?±?2 and 16?±?8?μmol/L/d, respectively. We observed a difference in the relative importance of aerobic and anaerobic CH4 oxidation during the rainy and the dry season, with a greater role for aerobic oxidation during the dry season. Lower anaerobic CH4 oxidation rates were measured in presence of molybdate in half of the measurements, suggesting the occurrence of linkage between SO42? reduction and anaerobic CH4 oxidation. NO3? consumption and dissolved Mn production rates were never high enough to sustain the measured anaerobic CH4 oxidation, reinforcing the idea of a coupling between SO42? reduction and CH4 oxidation in the anoxic waters of Lake Kivu. Two phenolic compounds, p-coumaric acid and feruloyl-arabinose, were localised by immunocytochemistry in the cell walls of the apical internode of two lines of maize (Co125 and W401) of different digestibility. The compounds were detected at two stages of cell maturity in the lignified tissues (sclerenchyma, fibres and xylem) and in the medullary parenchyma, which, in the samples studied, was not lignified. p-Coumaric acid is a phenolic acid associated with lignins, which confer resistance on plant cell walls to microbial degradation in the rumen. Feruloyl-arabinose is a compound associated with xylans, the principal hemicelluloses in Gramineae, which are potentially degradable. Labelling of p-coumaric acid decreased in both maize lines with cell age and as the cell walls became lignified. The mass of lignin deposited in the cell walls masked p-coumaric acid, thereby making it less accessible to the antibodies. There was an inverse relationship in the labelling of p-coumaric acid and feruloyl-arabinose. Feruloyl-arabinose was more heavily labelled as the plant cell walls matured in all the lignified tissues of both maize lines and in the parenchyma of the less digestible line. Cavitation erosion during the incubation period was investigated via pitting tests conducted on three different materials: an Aluminum alloy, a Nickel Aluminum Bronze alloy and a Duplex Stainless Steel. Pitting tests were conducted in a cavitation tunnel in the velocity range 45–90 m/s at a constant cavitation number. The test section was made of a straight nozzle 16 mm in diameter discharged into the radial 2.5 mm space between two flat walls. Cavitation appears in the form of a toroidal cavity attached to the nozzle exit and damage on the samples facing the nozzle is concentrated in a circular ring centered in the cavity closure region. The exposure time was adjusted to avoid pit overlapping. The material surface was examined using a conventional contact profilometer which allowed us to identify the pits, count them, and measure their main characteristics such as depth, surface area, and volume. From these the pitting rate, the coverage rate, and the depth of deformation rate were defined. Pits were classified according to their diameter. For all materials and operating conditions, pitting rate appears to follow an exponential law in relation to the pit diameter. This law depends upon two parameters only, which were identified as the coverage time τ (i.e. the time required for the surface to be covered by erosion pits) and a characteristic pit diameter δ, which corresponds to the pits whose contribution to the coverage process is the highest. Scaling laws for pitting were derived accounting for both material properties and flow velocity, and a procedure to make pitting test results non-dimensional is proposed. The influence of the material on pitting test results was analyzed. It is shown that the damage is not correlated in simple terms with the elastic limit determined from conventional tensile tests and it is conjectured that other parameters such as the strain rate might play a significant role and should be included in the analysis. The effect of flow velocity on both parameters τ and δ was analyzed and a classical power law was found for the influence of the flow velocity on pitting rate for all three materials. Dynamic Features of the Rumen Metabolism of Linoleic Acid,Linolenic Acid and Linseed Oil Measured in Vitro 总被引:1,自引:3,他引:1
The lipid quality of ruminant products is largely determined by the extent of rumen microbial biohydrogenation (BH) of polyunsaturated
fatty acids (FAs) and the substances formed thereby. In vitro batch incubations with mixed rumen bacteria were tracked over
24 h to characterize the profiles and kinetics of the BH products from three lipid sources: pure linoleic acid (c9,c12–18:2), pure linolenic acid (c9,c12,c15–18:3) and linseed oil (mainly c9,c12,c15–18:3 in triacylglycerols). After 24 h of incubation biohydrogenation was more complete for c9,c12–18:2, which gave mainly stearic acid (18:0), than for c9,c12,c15–18:3, which yielded mainly trans-18:1 FAs. This suggests inhibition of the final BH step (18:1 to 18:0). Incubations of c9,c12–18:2 resulted in high levels of carbon 10- and 12-desaturated 18:1, t10,c12- and c9,t11-CLAs. Incubations of c9,c12,c15–18:3 resulted in high levels of t11–18:1, carbon 13- and 15-desaturated 18:1 as well as t11,c15–18:2 and 11,13-CLAs. A comparative study of linolenic acid and linseed oil kinetics revealed that the BH process was not
significantly slowed by the esterification of polyunsaturated FAs, but may have been limited by the isomerization step in
which the cis12 double bond goes to the trans11 position. The disappearance rates of c9,c12–18:2 and c9,c12,c15–18:3 ranged from 23.6 to 44.6%/h. The wide variety of BH intermediates found here underlines the large number of possible

Bipolar plate represents a key component of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEFC) with several essential functions, among them the electric connection of elementary cells. Usually made of graphite, this component is studied worldwide in order to develop a commercially viable alternative: different ways have been being investigated, and to date, despite corrosion issues, stainless steel (SS) appears as a good candidate material, but its Electrical Contact Resistance (ECR) can reach unacceptable values when exposed to PEFC environment. This paper offers a comprehensive study of the parameters acting on ECR when using uncoated SS in PEFC: roughness, which influences the surface contact area with carbon baking, bulk composition of the alloy, which influences only partly the nature of passive films, and the composition and structure of passive films, strongly modified by surface treatments and ageing conditions. 相似文献

The effect of adding white scattering layers to the bottom side of luminescent solar concentrator waveguides is evaluated. It is determined that adding a rear scatterer separated from the waveguide by an air gap results in a large increase of energy output from the waveguides, and this enhancement persists over long (>30 cm) distances, although the magnitude of the enhancement decreases with distance. An attached scatterer resulted in the greatest improvement of light output for short (∼6 cm) distances, but actually reduced edge emissions over longer distances. We provide estimates for the relative contribution of dye-emitted light and scattered light to the total waveguide emission, as well as distinguishing between the contributions of direct and indirect scattering of light to the total output as a function of dye content of the waveguides. 相似文献

This paper deals with a well-known problem in the general area of search theory: optimize the search resources sharing so as to maximize the probability of detection of a (moving) target. However, the problem we consider here considerably differs from the classical one. First, there is a bilevel search planning and we have to consider jointly discrete and continuous optimization problems. To this perspective original methods are proposed within a common framework. Furthermore, this framework is sufficiently general and versatile so as to be easily and successfully extended to the difficult problem of the multizone multisensor search planning for a Markovian target. 相似文献

The performance of radio waves in open environments has been studied for years. In contrast, the behavior of Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) inside metal enclosed areas is not yet understood. This research project focuses on the 3-D mapping
of RFID signal strength inside a 12 m refrigerated marine container instrumented with three different types of radio frequency
(RF) emitters: 915 MHz reader; 2.45 GHz reader and 433 MHz RF transmitter. The main goal is to find a frequency/configuration
that would allow real time reading of the temperature in a shipment of perishable products using RFID. Only one frequency
and one antenna were used at a time. The RF transmitter antenna was mounted at two different places inside the container;
at the top of the front wall (facing back) and on the ceiling in the middle of the container (facing down). The signal strength
was acquired by a spectrum analyzer and its antenna was mounted on a small electric cart inside the container. The cart was
programmed to move along the length of the container and stop repeatedly, allowing three automated measures per position.
All data were analyzed in terms of power level and attenuation. The maps showed that the RFID antenna positioned at the front
of the container delivered slightly better results than the one in the middle of the ceiling. The results showed a significantly
higher performance at the 433 MHz level.
