A new convexity measure for polygons   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract-Convexity estimators are commonly used in the analysis of shape. In this paper, we define and evaluate a new convexity measure for planar regions bounded by polygons. The new convexity measure can be understood as a "boundary-based" measure and in accordance with this it is more sensitive to measured boundary defects than the so called "area-based" convexity measures. When compared with the convexity measure defined as the ratio between the Euclidean perimeter of the convex hull of the measured shape and the Euclidean perimeter of the measured shape then the new convexity measure also shows some advantages-particularly for shapes with holes. The new convexity measure has the following desirable properties: 1) the estimated convexity is always a number from (0, 1], 2) the estimated convexity is 1 if and only if the measured shape is convex, 3) there are shapes whose estimated convexity is arbitrarily close to 0, 4) the new convexity measure is invariant under similarity transformations, and 5) there is a simple and fast procedure for computing the new convexity measure.  相似文献

Classification Using Φ-Machines and Constructive Function Approximation   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
This article presents a new classification algorithm, called CLEF, which induces a -machine by constructing its own features based on the training data. The features can be viewed as defining subsets of the instance space, and they allow CLEF to create useful non-linear functions over the input variables. The algorithm is guaranteed to find a classifier that separates the training instances, if such a separation is possible. We compare CLEF empirically to several other classification algorithms, including a well-known decision tree inducer, an artificial neural network inducer, and a support vector machine inducer. Our results show that the CLEF-induced -machines and support vector machines have similar accuracy on the suite tested, and that both are significantly more accurate than the other classifiers produced. We argue that the classifiers produced by CLEF are easy to interpret, and hence may be preferred over support vector machines in certain circumstances.  相似文献

This research addresses a major shortcoming in todays requirements analysis techniques—the lack of a rigorous and comprehensive process to explicitly capture the relationship structure of the problem domain. Whereas other analysis techniques lightly address the relationship discovery process, relationship analysis (RA) is a systematic, domain-independent analysis technique focusing exclusively on a domains relationship structure. This paper describes RAs taxonomy of relationship types and corresponding brainstorming questions for eliciting the relationship structure from a domain expert. A preliminary case study analysis of online bookstores using RA as well as a formal experiment have both confirmed RAs effectiveness in helping the analyst produce significantly higher quality requirements. RA should become an invaluable tool for analysts, irrespective of the software engineering approach taken during systems analysis.  相似文献

Understanding reduction of carbon tetrachloride at nickel surfaces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Nickel has been found to be an effective cathode material and catalyst for reductive destruction of chlorinated solvents in contaminated water. This study investigated reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride (CT) at a nickel rotating disk electrode using chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Chronoamperometry experiments were performed to determine rates of CT reduction as a function of the electrode potential, pH, CT concentration, and temperature. The reaction products of CT dechlorination were 95 +/- 4% methane and 4.1 +/- 2.5% chloroform. Only trace levels of methylene chloride and chloromethane were produced, indicating that sequential hydrogenolysis was not the predominant pathway for methane production. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that the rate-limiting step for methane production was the transfer of the first electron to a physically adsorbed CT molecule. The temperature independence of the electron transfer coefficient and the decreasing activation energy with decreasing electrode potential indicated that the rate-limiting step involved an outer-sphere electron transfer. At neutral pH values, oxides inactivated much of the electrode surface for both CT reduction and hydrogen evolution. At lower pH values, oxide dissolution served to increase the electroactive surface area of the disk electrode. Anson analysis and kinetic modeling showed that CT adsorption to electroactive sites was a nonlinear function of the CT concentration and was in equilibrium with the bulk solution. CT dechlorination rates on nickel electrodes were 16 times slower than those on iron electrodes under similar conditions. However, CT reactions at nickel surfaces produced predominantly methane as the first detectable product, while reduction at iron surfaces produced chloroform. These results suggest that, although nickel is not a catalyst for the rate-limiting step for CT dechlorination, it may serve a catalytic role in subsequent reaction steps.  相似文献

An ideal microchip for single-cell experiments should be able to allow us to culture cells, to select any desired single cell from a group, to retain the cell for convenient cellular signal detection, and to deliver any buffer or reagent directly to the cell at any time during continual detection and observation. Most importantly, any negative impact on the live cell should be minimized. To accomplish all these functions, we developed a three-dimensional liquid flow control concept and employed special liquid flow fields to manipulate and retain a single yeast cell freely in the chip. A zero-speed point was controlled to retain the cell for three-dimensional cell balancing and cell scanning. A dispersive flow delivered reagents at a high speed to very near the cell and provided them to the cell at a low speed. No force stronger than its gravitational force was exerted on the cell, which could be balanced on different positions on an arc-sloping wall, thus minimizing any negative impact on the cell due to strong liquid flows. Specifically, we demonstrate on-chip single-cell culture, cell wall removal, and reagent delivery. Subsequently, single-cell fluorescence detection was performed, and noise filtering and background correction were applied for data processing.  相似文献

Since the publication of the Optical Path Transmittance (OPTRAN) algorithm [Appl. Opt. 34, 8396 (1995)], much of the code and implementation has been refined and improved. The predictor set has been expanded, an objective method to select optimal predictors has been established, and the two-interpolation method has been discarded for a single-interpolation method. The OPTRAN coefficients have been generated for a wide range of satellites and instruments. The most significant new development is the Jacobian-K-matrix version of OPTRAN, which is currently used for operational direct radiance assimilation in both the Global Data Analysis System and the ETA Data Analysis System at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, National Weather Service, National Centers for Environmental Prediction Environmental Modeling Center. This paper documents these improvements and serves as a record of the current status of the operational OPTRAN code.  相似文献

Scattered total internal reflection of visible light is used to measure linear nanometric distance to as small as 10 nm. Specifically, we measure the height of magnetic transducer heads above a rotating glass disk. A breakthrough in the approach to calibration, based on combining the second derivative of the transmittance of the scattered light and parameter fitting, substantially improves the quality of the measurement relative to previous demonstrations of this method. The results agree to 1 nm with an industry-standard three-color interferometer to and including the lowest values measured. The technique in principle remains robust to as low as the zero height. Furthermore the calibration point can be as low as 10 nm, which is especially attractive in practice.  相似文献

In the upper layer of the global ocean, 2082 in situ chlorophyll biomass values (Chl) are retrieved by concurrent satellite-derived inherent optical properties (IOP). It is found that (1) the phytoplankton absorption coefficient IOP alone does not provide satisfactory (Chl) retrieval; (2) the chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption coefficient IOP must also be used to obtain satisfactory retrieval through (Chl) alpha a ph + pa CDOM where p is a constant and a ph and aCDOM are, respectively, the phytoplankton and CDOM absorption coefficients; (3) the IOP-based (Chl) retrieval performance is comparable to standard satellite reflectance ratio retrievals (that have CDOM absorption intrinsically embedded within them); (4) inclusion of the total backscattering coefficient IOP does not contribute significantly to (Chl) retrieval; and (5) the new IOP-based algorithm may provide the possibility for future research to establish the actual role of extracellular CDOM from all sources in the intracellular production of chlorophyll biomass.  相似文献

Laser-induced fluorescence target generation in dye-doped polymer films has recently been introduced as a promising alternative to more traditional photogrammetric targeting techniques for surface profiling of highly transparent or reflective membrane structures. We investigate the photophysics of these dye-doped polymers to help determine their long-term durability and suitability for laser-induced fluorescence photogrammetric targeting. These investigations included experimental analysis of the fluorescence emission pattern, spectral content, temporal lifetime, linearity, and half-life. Results are presented that reveal an emission pattern wider than normal Lambertian diffuse surface scatter, a fluorescence time constant of 6.6 ns, a pump saturation level of approximately 20 microJ/mm2, and a useful lifetime of more than 300,000 measurements. Furthermore, two demonstrations of photogrammetric measurements by laser-induced fluorescence targeting are presented, showing agreement between photogrammetric and physically measured dimensions within the measurement scatter of 100 microm.  相似文献

Gated detection of the output of a fiber-optic-coupled radiation dosimeter effectively eliminated the direct contribution of Cerenkov radiation to the signal. The radiation source was an external beam radiotherapy machine that provided pulses of 6-MeV x rays. Gated detection was used to discriminate the signal collected during the radiation pulses, including Cerenkov interference, from the signal collected between the radiation pulses due only to phosphorescence from the Cu(1+)-doped glass detector. Gated detection of the long-lived phosphorescence of the Cu(1+)-doped glass provided real-time dose measurements that were linear with the absorbed dose and that were accurate for all field sizes studied.  相似文献
