Indoor Air Quality: Exploring Policy Options to Reduce Human Exposures

Deciding between the different policy approaches available for reducing human exposures to indoor pollutants is an exceptionally complex task. These options can range from waiting until more definitive information is available to enacting regulatory standards, with many variations in between. This paper presents some of the factors policy-makers must consider in establishing indoor air quality policies, and the role researchers should play in ensuring that indoor air policies are based on the best available scientific information.     

The effects of observational feedback on treatment integrity in school-based behavioral consultation.

Evaluated the effects of performance feedback on levels of treatment integrity in school-based behavioral consultation. Three teachers employed in a residential treatment community were responsible for treatment implementation. Treatment integrity was defined as the percentage of 2-min intervals during which contingent teacher reinforcement for student on-task behavior was directly observed. Teacher and child behavior were monitored across baseline, traditional consultation, and consultation with performance feedback conditions in a multiple baseline design. Following a Problem Identification Interview and Problem Analysis Interview (J. R. Bergan, 1977), mean levels of treatment integrity for the 3 teachers ranged from 9% to 37%. The addition of a performance feedback package increased treatment integrity for all 3 teachers to levels ranging from 60% to 83%. The findings contribute to a growing literature supporting the need for direct assessment of treatment integrity in school-based consultation research and practice. Microfabricated Lamb wave device based on PZT sol-gel thin film formechanical transport of solid particles and liquids

The fabrication using silicon micromachining and characterization of an acoustic Lamb wave actuator is presented. The intended use of the device is for mass transport and sensor applications. The device consists of dual interdigitated transducers patterned on a thin-film composite membrane of silicon nitride, platinum, and a sol-gel-derived piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) thin film. The acoustic properties of the device are presented along with preliminary applications to mechanical transport and liquid delivery systems. Improved acoustic signals and improved mass transport are achieved with PZT over present Lamb wave devices utilizing ZnO or AlN as the piezoelectric transducer     

Mapping a quantitative trait locus involved in melanotic encapsulation of foreign bodies in the malaria vector, Anopheles gambiae

A Plasmodium-refractory strain of Anopheles gambiae melanotically encapsulates many species of Plasmodium, whereas wild-type mosquitoes are usually susceptible. This encapsulation trait can also be observed by studying the response of refractory and susceptible strains to intrathoracically injected CM-Sephadex beads. We report the results of broad-scale quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping of the encapsulation trait using the bead model system. Interval mapping using the method of maximum likelihood identified one major QTL, Pen1. The 13.7-cM interval containing Pen1 was defined by marker AGH157 at 8E and AGH46 at 7A on 2R. Pen1 was associated with a maximum LOD score of 9.0 and accounted for 44% of the phenotypic variance in the distribution of phenotypes in the backcross. To test if this QTL is important for encapsulation of Plasmodium berghei, F2 progeny were infected with P. berghei and evaluated for degree of parasite encapsulation. For each of the two markers that define the interval containing Pen1, a significant difference of encapsulation was seen in progeny with at least one refractory allele in contrast with homozygous susceptible progeny. These results suggest that Pen1 is important for melanotic encapsulation of Plasmodium as well as beads.     

Histology of rat small bowel transplants: cyclosporine A ameliorates features of rejection including apoptosis and ganglion cell reduction

The spectrum of photoaging in human skin shows a recognizable progression from subtle to profound, reflecting the various anatomic and structural changes that appear with aging skin. Qualification and quantification of these changes on both the macroscopic and microscopic levels enable the physician to select and evaluate appropriate therapeutic approaches to the problem of chronic solar damage. Comparative studies remain to be done that will further refine our abilities to match the right solutions to the recognized problems.     

A shared genetic mechanism for melanotic encapsulation of CM-Sephadex beads and a malaria parasite, Plasmodium cynomolgi B, in the mosquito, Anopheles gambiae

Dialysis dose and malnutrition have a great impact on the clinical out come of chronic hemodialysis patients. The interrelationships between them, however, remain undefined. Thus, we performed a study to determine the effects of increasing the dialysis dose on serum albumin concentrations and mortality in hemodialysis patients. We examined urea kinetic modeling, biochemical nutritional indices, comorbid conditions, patient survival time, and annual mortality rate. Dialysis dose, measured by Kt/V, significantly increased from 1.3 +/- 0.3 in 1987 to 1.5 +/- 0.4 in 1990 and to 1.7 +/- 0.4 in 1993. Serum albumin level also increased from 3.8 +/- 0.4 g/dL in 1987 to 4.0 +/- 0.4 in 1990 and to 1.7 +/- 0.4 in 1993. In 1993, 76% of patients had Kt/V > or = 1.50 compared with 45% in 1990 and 28% in 1987, whereas 82% of patients had a serum albumin level > or 4.0 g/dL in 1993 compared with 58% in 1990 and 29% in 1987. Protein catabolic rate and hematocrit also increased from 1987 to 1993, but not serum cholesterol or triglyceride. The annual mortality rate declined from 16.1% in 1987 to 13.2% in 1990 and to 8.0% in 1993. The decrease in mortality appeared to be unrelated to differences in patient selection or comorbid conditions. Serum albumin levels, hematocrit, Kt/V, and protein catabolic rate were significantly related to patient survival after age, sex, and diabetic status had been adjusted. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between Kt/Vs and serum albumin concentration (r = 0.216, P < 0.001). Thus it appears that increasing the dose of dialysis improves serum albumin levels and perhaps survival rate in hemodialysis patients as well.     

Relation between sexual abuse in childhood and adult depression: case-control study

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between sexual abuse in childhood and adult depression in women. DESIGN: Two stage, case detection and case identification design, using the 30-item general health questionnaire and the Beck depression inventory for screening and the affective items relating to current functioning on the schizophrenia and affective disorders schedule to identify depressed cases. Details of sexual abuse in childhood were elicited retrospectively by semistructured interview, and social problems by the social problems questionnaire. SETTING: Three general practices, in middle class suburban, deprived inner city, and rural areas. SUBJECTS: 1189 women were screened and 237 subsequently interviewed; 132 were depressed. RESULTS: 49 (37%) of the depressed interviews and 24 (23%) of the non-depressed interviews reported experience of sexual abuse when they were aged under 16 years. A positive association existed between the more severe abuse and depression--all those who had experienced penetration were depressed as adults. A relation was also found between sexual abuse in childhood and sexual problems, housing problems, and problems with their children at school. CONCLUSION: A positive association between child sexual abuse and depression was confirmed, but this was confined to more severe abuse (penetration or attempted penetration).     

In search of tuberculosis virulence genes

The identity of the virulence genes that enable tuberculosis organisms to survive in macrophages and to induce the features of tuberculosis remains largely unknown. Numerous putative virulence genes have been identified, but so far there is only conclusive evidence for the role of two genes, KatG and rpoV, in virulence.     

Preparation of polyimide-epoxy composites

The formation of a three dimensional network of crosslinked epoxy leads all unmodified epoxies to have inherent brittleness and relatively low degradation temperatures. Polyimides, on the other hand, are widely used for applications that require high degrees of flexibility and thermal resistance. Here, we have focused on the preparation of epoxy systems cured with polyamic acids instead of traditional amino-group-containing hardening agents. The cure behavior and potential reaction mechanisms of EPON 828 resin and polyamic acid mixtures were evaluated by DSC and TGA. Thermal analysis showed a complex reaction sequence taking place in the mixture and also determined the extent of reaction of the polyamic acid with itself and the competitive reaction of the polyamic acid with the epoxy. The compositions of the mixtures were varied to see the dependence of the cure behavior on component concentrations. Solutions of the two components did not phase separate and also phase separation was not apparent either optically or microscopically in the cured samples. This phase behavior was attributed to a unique in situ reaction. A novel solvent system for the polyamic acid precursor was also used.
