Judgments of social justice: Compromises between equality and efficiency.

Political economists agree that a trade-off exists between equality and efficiency. Using a hypothetical society paradigm, the mean income (representing efficiency) and income variability (representing equality) of distributions of wealth and the correlation between wealth and effort within a society were manipulated. Ss made all pairwise comparisons of distributions within societies of differing meritocracy. A "maximin" principle best described trade-off resolution strategies when effort and outcome were weakly linked: People maximized the minimum standard of living within a society. A compromise principle best described preferences when income was tightly linked to effort: People rejected distributions in which some citizens fell below the "poverty line" but maximized efficiency above this constraint. Ideological polarization was pronounced under moderate meritocracy; here liberals could focus on the role of chance and conservatives on the role of effort and ability. Interoceptive Sensitivity and Self-Reports of Emotional Experience.

People differ in the extent to which they emphasize feelings of activation or deactivation in their verbal reports of experienced emotion, termed arousal focus (AF). Two multimethod studies indicate that AF is linked to heightened interoceptive sensitivity (as measured by performance on a heartbeat detection task). People who were more sensitive to their heartbeats emphasized feelings of activation and deactivation when reporting their experiences of emotion over time more than did those who were less sensitive. This relationship was not accounted for by several other variables, including simple language effects. Aspects of social and emotional competence in adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Social and emotional competence were evaluated using self-report and behavioral measures in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and controls. Adults with ADHD viewed themselves as less socially competent but more sensitive toward violations of social norms than controls. Films depicting emotional interactions were used to assess linguistic properties of free recall and perceived emotional intensity. Although adults with ADHD used more words to describe the scenes, they used fewer emotion-related words, despite rating the emotions depicted as more intense than did controls. In contrast, no group differences for words depicting social or cognitive processes were observed. Overall, adults with ADHD appear more aware of their problems in social versus emotional skills. A novel mutation of presenilin 1 in familial Alzheimer's disease in Israel detected by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis

Germline mutations in the presenilin 1 (PS1) gene apparently account for the majority of early-onset, familial Alzheimer's disease (AD). Using a mutation-screening strategy (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis; DGGE), we analyzed a large family with early onset AD and seizures. The patients in this family showed a novel missense mutation in exon 5 of the PS1 gene (A to T change in codon 120, altering glutamine to aspartic acid). This novel mutation is located within the second hydrophilic domain of the molecule, a region not particularly involved in previously described germline mutations, and is of unknown biological significance. These results also demonstrate that DGGE can be used effectively to screen for mutations within this gene.     

Predicting postdischarge opiate abstinence from admission measures of motivation and confidence.

Admission scores from a model comprising 3 motivation factors concerning the cessation of heroin use and a confidence scale concerning postdischarge abstinence were tested for their ability to predict postdischarge outcomes in patients beginning inpatient opiate detoxification. Statistically significant prediction of abstinence from heroin 30 days after discharge and the number of heroin-free days in the 3 months following admission was based on the confidence scale and a factor concerned with externally imposed constraints on continued heroin use. The single-scale confidence measure made the largest contribution to each prediction, indicating that such scales may be potentially useful outcome predictors for postdischarge abstinence. Improved sooting tendency measurements for aromatic hydrocarbons and their implications for naphthalene formation pathways

Sooting tendencies have been determined for aromatic hydrocarbons using a new definition: the maximum soot volume fraction fv,max measured in a coflow methane/air nonpremixed flame whose fuel is doped with 400 ppm of the test hydrocarbon. These fv,max were converted into apparatus-independent yield sooting indices (YSIs) by the equation YSI=C×fv,max+D, where C and D are apparatus-specific parameters chosen so that YSI-benzene = 30 and YSI-1,2-dihydronaphthalene = 100. The dopants were added to the fuel mixture with a syringe pump and fv,max was measured with laser-induced incandescence. YSI was determined for 6 cycloaliphatics and for 62 aromatics, which included 28 alkylbenzenes, 10 alkenylbenzenes, 10 alkynylbenzenes, 25 multiply substituted benzenes, 6 two-ring aromatics, and 6 substituted benzenes with heteroatoms in the side chains. The YSIs correlate well with literature values of threshold sooting index (TSI), which is a more traditional sooting tendency based on the height of pure-fuelled flames at the smoke point. This agreement indicates that fv,max and smoke height are equivalent measures of sooting tendency and that YSI is largely apparatus-independent. However, the YSIs have a total uncertainty of ±3%, which is substantially better than the TSIs, and the number of aromatic YSIs reported here is more than double the number of aromatic TSIs in the literature. The YSIs depend strongly on molecular structure; thus they provide information about the chemical kinetic reaction mechanisms responsible for fuel decomposition and hydrocarbon growth from a broad cross section of one-ring aromatics. Important naphthalene formation pathways appear to include acetylene addition to ethynylphenyl, propargyl addition to benzyl, and methyl addition to indenyl. This last pathway is particularly significant because it converts indene quantitatively to naphthalene and because the side chains in many alkenylbenzenes and alkynylbenzenes cyclize to form five-membered rings.
