Net-based collaborative learning discourses often suffer from deficiencies such as lack of coherence and coordination. It is suggested that the provision of two functionalities, referencing and typing, which learners may optionally use to ground their contributions during a chat-based discourse, can improve collaborative learning. In particular, we examined if goal focus, type of task and group size affect learning outcomes and the use of these functionalities. A chat-based system, called a learning protocol, implements these functionalities and serves as a net-based collaborative learning environment. Results suggest that a learning protocol is more beneficial for knowledge-acquisition tasks than for problem-solving tasks, and that the use of supporting functionalities increases when goal focus is on the group rather than on the individual. Also, there is a tendency that learning outcomes improve as group size increases. We propose that learning protocols provide potentially valuable design features that can promote net-based collaborative learning. 相似文献

The method of Moving Least Squares (MLS) is a popular framework for reconstructing continuous functions from scattered data due to its rich mathematical properties and well-understood theoretical foundations. This paper applies MLS to volume rendering, providing a unified mathematical framework for ray casting of scalar data stored over regular as well as irregular grids. We use the MLS reconstruction to render smooth isosurfaces and to compute accurate derivatives for high-quality shading effects. We also present a novel, adaptive preintegration scheme to improve the efficiency of the ray casting algorithm by reducing the overall number of function evaluations, and an efficient implementation of our framework exploiting modern graphics hardware. The resulting system enables high-quality volume integration and shaded isosurface rendering for regular and irregular volume data. 相似文献

Optimal spike-timing-dependent plasticity for precise action potential firing in supervised learning
In timing-based neural codes, neurons have to emit action potentials at precise moments in time. We use a supervised learning paradigm to derive a synaptic update rule that optimizes by gradient ascent the likelihood of postsynaptic firing at one or several desired firing times. We find that the optimal strategy of up- and downregulating synaptic efficacies depends on the relative timing between presynaptic spike arrival and desired postsynaptic firing. If the presynaptic spike arrives before the desired postsynaptic spike timing, our optimal learning rule predicts that the synapse should become potentiated. The dependence of the potentiation on spike timing directly reflects the time course of an excitatory postsynaptic potential. However, our approach gives no unique reason for synaptic depression under reversed spike timing. In fact, the presence and amplitude of depression of synaptic efficacies for reversed spike timing depend on how constraints are implemented in the optimization problem. Two different constraints, control of postsynaptic rates and control of temporal locality, are studied. The relation of our results to spike-timing-dependent plasticity and reinforcement learning is discussed. 相似文献

Health consumers have become increasingly interested in genetic information. This increasing consumer interest in genetic information is coupled with a growing trend in consumer uses of the Internet for health‐related purposes. Also, the number of websites providing health‐related information has grown dramatically. In the realm of genetics, the National Libraries of Medicine launched the Genetic Home Reference (GHR) web site with the goal of serving as an information resource on genetics for consumers. In this project, we examine the role of quality perceptions on attitude and behavioral intentions toward GHR. The study reveals that quality plays a key role in determining attitude and behavioral intentions toward GHR. Investigating shear flows is important in technical applications as well as in fundamental research. Velocity measurements with high spatial resolution are necessary. Laser Doppler anemometry allows nonintrusive precise measurements, but the spatial resolution is limited by the size of the measurement volume to approximately 50 microm. A new laser Doppler profile sensor is proposed, enabling determination of the velocity profile inside the measurement volume. Two fringe systems with contrary fringe spacing gradients are generated to determine the position as well as the velocity of passing tracer particles. Physically discriminating between the two measuring channels is done by a frequency-division-multiplexing technique with acousto-optic modulators. A frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser and a fiber-optic measuring head were employed, resulting in a portable and flexible sensor. In the center of the measurement volume of approximately 1-mm length, a spatial resolution of approximately 5 microm was obtained. Spatially resolved measurements of the Blasius velocity profile are presented. Small velocities as low as 3 cm/s are measured. The sensor is applied in a wind tunnel to determine the wall shear stress of a boundary layer flow. All measurement results show good agreement with the theoretical prediction. 相似文献

Using online in vivo chemiluminescence (CL), we studied for the first time continuously the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) after global cerebral ischemia and the relationship of ROS production to CBF. In anesthetized rats equipped with a closed cranial window, the CL enhancer, lucigenin (1 mM), was superfused onto the brain topically. CL was measured through the cranial window with a cooled photomultiplier, and CBF was measured simultaneously with laser-Doppler flowmetry. Reperfusion after 10 min (n = 8) of global cerebral ischemia led to a CL peak to 188 +/- 77% (baseline = 100%) within 10 +/- 4 min. After 2 h of reperfusion, CL had returned to 102 +/- 28%. Reperfusion after 20 min (n = 8) of ischemia increased CL to 225 +/- 48% within 12 +/- 3 min. After 2 h, CL was still increased (150 +/- 44%, p < 0.05 compared with 10 min of ischemia). CL after 10 min of ischemia was neither affected by brain topical free CuZn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) (100 U/ml, n = 3) nor by i.v. administration of free CuZn-SOD (104 U/kg, followed by 104 U/kg/h, n = 3). The CBF hyperfusion peak on reperfusion preceded the CL peak in all experiments by several minutes. In additional in vitro experiments we investigated the source of CL: Intracellular loading of lucigenin was demonstrated in cultured CNS cells, and a very similar pattern of CL as in the in vivo preparation after ischemia developed in rat brain slices after 15 min of hypoxia, which was unaffected by free CuZn-SOD (100 U/ml) but strongly attenuated by liposome-entrapped CuZn-SOD. We conclude that lucigenin-enhanced CL is a promising tool to study ROS production continuously from the in vivo brain of experimental animals and brain slices, and that the CL signal most likely derives from the intracellular production of superoxide. The production of ROS is preceded by reperfusion, is burst-like, and is dependent on the duration of the ischemic interval. 相似文献

That some therapists engage in sexual misconduct with patients has been unequivocally established. In recent years, however, some patients' allegations of sexual misconduct have been determined to be false. This paper describes four cases in which hospitalized psychiatric patients made false allegations. Such allegations may result from patients' seeking to gain monetarily or in other ways or from a desire for retaliation or revenge against a clinician who they believe has scorned, abandoned, or otherwise mistreated them. In other cases, especially among patients with a history of severe trauma, a patient's psychopathology may be inadvertently stimulated by diagnostic, treatment, or milieu activities. The authors recommend specific institutional responses to allegations of sexual misconduct, such as forming a clinical investigative team, conducting a physical examination, and reporting the charge to outside agencies or investigators when appropriate. Because false claims can have disastrous effects on all involved, clinicians should understand the presentations of such claims and the motivations behind them, and institutions should carefully develop a set of procedures for responding to them. 相似文献

Histology is the study of the structure of biological tissue using microscopy techniques. As digital imaging technology advances, high resolution microscopy of large tissue volumes is becoming feasible; however, new interactive tools are needed to explore and analyze the enormous datasets. In this paper we present a visualization framework that specifically targets interactive examination of arbitrarily large image stacks. Our framework is built upon two core techniques: display-aware processing and GPU-accelerated texture compression. With display-aware processing, only the currently visible image tiles are fetched and aligned on-the-fly, reducing memory bandwidth and minimizing the need for time-consuming global pre-processing. Our novel texture compression scheme for GPUs is tailored for quick browsing of image stacks. We evaluate the usability of our viewer for two histology applications: digital pathology and visualization of neural structure at nanoscale-resolution in serial electron micrographs. 相似文献
