Water-using processes are typically modeled as either fixed flowrate operations or fixed contaminant load operations. A new method for targeting the minimum freshwater and pinch in a single-contaminant water network is proposed, which can be applied to both kinds of operations. The method consists of plotting separate source and demand composites with flowrate as the horizontal axis and contaminant load unusually as the vertical axis. It is elegant, non-iterative, and can handle hybrid problems where both kinds of operations coexist.To design minimum freshwater networks for fixed flowrate problems, an algorithm is presented based on a newly developed principle of nearest neighbors. The principle simply states that the source streams to be chosen to satisfy a particular water demand must be the nearest available neighbors in terms of contaminant concentration.To design minimum freshwater networks for fixed contaminant load problems, the nearest neighbors algorithm is applied to process units that lie across the pinch. Units that lie entirely on one side of the pinch are satisfied by the cleanest source available on that side of the pinch. In other words, below-pinch units are satisfied by freshwater and above-pinch units are satisfied by the cleanest available stream above the pinch. Designs based on this methodology, apart from meeting the minimum freshwater target, also minimize the water flowing through the process units resulting in reduced network capital cost.  相似文献

In this paper a complex scheduling problem in flexible manufacturing system (FMS) has been addressed with a novel approach called knowledge based genetic algorithm (KBGA). The literature review indicates that meta-heuristics may be used for combinatorial decision-making problem in FMS and simple genetic algorithm (SGA) is one of the meta-heuristics that has attracted many researchers. This novel approach combines KB (which uses the power of tacit and implicit expert knowledge) and inherent quality of SGA for searching the optima simultaneously. In this novel approach, the knowledge has been used on four different stages of SGA: initialization, selection, crossover, and mutation. Two objective functions known as throughput and mean flow time, have been taken to measure the performance of the FMS. The usefulness of the algorithm has been measured on the basis of number of generations used for achieving better results than SGA. To show the efficacy of the proposed algorithm, a numerical example of scheduling data set has been tested. The KBGA was also tested on 10 different moderate size of data set to show its robustness for large sized problems involving flexibility (that offers multiple options) in FMS.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Iron and iodine deficiencies affect more than 30% of the world's population. Typical Indian diets contain adequate amounts of iron, but the bioavailability is poor. This serious limiting factor is caused by low intake of meat products rich in heme iron and intake of phytates in staple foods in the Indian diet, which inhibits iron absorption. OBJECTIVE: To test the stability of double-fortified salt (DFS) during storage and to assess its efficacy in improving the iron and iodine status of the communities. METHODS: The stability of both iodized salt and DFS during storage for a 2-year period was determined. The bioefficacy of DFS was assessed in communities covering three states of the country for a period of 1 year. This was a multicenter, single-blind trial covering seven clusters. The experimental group used DFS and the control group used iodized salt. The salts were used in all meals prepared for family members, but determination of hemoglobin by the cyanmethemoglobin method was performed in only two or three members per family, and not in children under 10 years of age (n = 393 and 436 in the experimental and control groups, respectively). The family size was usually four or five, with a male: female ratio of 1:1, consisting of two parents with two or three children. Hemoglobin was measured at baseline, 6 months (midpoint), and 12 months (endpoint). Urinary iodine was measured in only one cluster at baseline and endpoint. All the participants were dewormed at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. RESULTS: The iron and iodine in the DFS were stable during storage for 2 years. Over a period of 1 year, there was an increase of 1.98 g/dL of hemoglobin in the experimental group and 0.77 g/dL of hemoglobin in the control group; the latter increase may have been due to deworming. The median urinary iodine changed from 200 microg/dL at baseline to 205 microg/dL at the end of the study in the experimental group and from 225 microg/dL to 220 microg/dL in the control group. There was a statistically significant (p < .05) improvement in the median urinary iodine status of subjects who were iodine deficient (urinary iodine < 100 microg/L) in both the experimental and the control groups, a result showing that DFS was as efficient as iodized salt in increasing urinary iodine from a deficient to sufficient status. There was a statistically significant increase (p < .05) in hemoglobin in all seven clusters in the experimental group compared with the control. CONCLUSIONS: The iron and iodine in the DFS are stable in storage for 2 years. The DFS has proved beneficial in the delivery of bioavailable iron and iodine.  相似文献

A dimeric serine protease Neriifolin S of molecular mass 94 kDa with milk clotting activity has been purified from the latex of Euphorbia neriifolia by anion exchange and size-exclusion chromatography. It hydrolyses peptidyl substrates l-Ala-pNA with highest affinity (Km of 0.195 mM) and physiological efficiency (Kcat/Km of 144.5 mM s). Enzyme belongs to the class of neutral proteases with pI value of 6.8, optimal proteolytic activity displayed at pH 9.5 and temperature 45 °C. Its proteolytic activity is strongly stimulated in the presence of Ca+2 ions and exclusively inhibited by serine protease inhibitors. Enzyme is fairly stable toward chemical denaturants, pH and temperature. The apparent Tm, was found to be 65 °C. Thermal inactivation follow first order kinetics with activation energy (Ea), activation enthalpy (ΔH∗), free energy change (ΔG∗) and entropy (ΔS∗) of 27.54 kJ mol−1, 24.89 kJ mol−1, −82.34 kJ mol−1 and 337.20 J mol−1 K−1.  相似文献

This article presents a technical review on the effects of thermal loads evolved at the wheel–rail–brake contact interfaces. These dynamic contact interfaces develop heat transfer conditions of widely varied thermal level. Their modeling to identify the sources for a variety of defect formation, observable on wheel tread or rail surface, is very important. The railway system, in general, has to bear axle load, friction load, and thermal load arising from their contact conditions in addition to traction and dynamic loads. The defects arising from the interaction of thermal load and other loadings may be identified as hot spots, shelling, spalling, rolling contact fatigue (RCF), and corrugation. The mechanisms for the formation of such defects are pivoted over the existing thermal environment of dynamic interacting surfaces. This review summarizes the works of early investigations and recent advances in modeling the heat transfer conditions required to estimate the temperature distribution at the contact zone. The heat partitioning method for both drag and stop braking conditions, in the presence of rail chill effect, is emphasized. Thermal gradient, introduced by localized temperature rise in the contact zone, in the presence of variable friction coefficient, promotes the RCF process. These alter the residual stresses in the contact region to cause a structural shakedown, aggravate plastic flow and activates ratchetting phenomenon in rails. The evolution of thermomechanical surface and subsurface fatigue cracks are also discussed for the completeness of this article. The effect of all such defect formation, emerging from thermal loading condition, and their countermeasures for defect mitigation are presented in this review. This abridged technical documentation envisions attracting more research in the area to improve wheel–rail set design and performance standards to extend enhanced safety and comfort to rail transport operation. It is opined that the thermomechanical loading, their effects on promoting defect formation and propagation should be studied in combination instead of the current practice of treating them separately.  相似文献

In present study,we report the preparation of coconut shell activated carbon as adsorbent and its appli-cation for Bi(Ⅲ) removal from aqueous solutions.The developed adsorbent was characterized with scanning elec-tron microscope(SEM),Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR),C,H,N,S analyzer,and BET surface area analyzer.The parameters examined include agitation time,initial concentration of Bi(Ⅲ),adsorbent dose and temperature.The maximum adsorption of Bi(Ⅲ)(98.72%) was observed at 250 mg·L-1 of Bi(Ⅲ) and adsorbent dose of 0.7 g when agitation was at 160 r·min-1 for 240 min at(299±2) K.The thermodynamic parameters such as Gibb’s free energy(△Gθ),enthalpy(△Hθ) and entropy(△Sθ) were evaluated.For the isotherm models applied to adsorption study,the Langmuir isotherm model fits better than the Freundlich isotherm.The maximum adsorption capacity from the Langmuir isotherm was 54.35 mg?g?1 of Bi(Ⅲ).The kinetic study of the adsorption shows that the pseudo second order model is more appropriate than the pseudo first order model.The result shows that,coconut shell ac-tivated carbon is an effective adsorbent to remove Bi(Ⅲ) from aqueous solutions with good adsorption capacity.  相似文献

Summary We have grafted butyl rubber from PVC under a variety of conditions. The physical-mechanical properties of these graft copolymers have been examined both before and after extraction with hexane of the ungrafted butyl rubber. We have found a significant increase in the tensile strength of these materials upon S2Cl2 treatment (curing) in THF solution. This increase was observed even with unextracted copolymers. Electron micrograph studies suggest that curing causes an aggregation of the butyl rubber segments into crosslinked domains.  相似文献

Carrier gas based thermodynamic cycles are common in water desalination applications. These cycles often require condensation of water vapor out of the carrier gas stream. As the carrier gas is most likely a noncondensable gas present in very high concentrations (60–95%), a large additional resistance to heat transfer is present. It is proposed to reduce the aforementioned thermal resistance by condensing the vapor–gas mixture in a column of cold liquid rather than on a cold surface using a bubble column heat exchanger. A theoretical predictive model for estimating the heat‐transfer rates and new experimental data to validate this model are described. The model is purely physics based without the need for any adjustable parameters, and it is shown to predict heat rates within 0 to ?20% of the experimental values. The experiments demonstrate that heat‐transfer rates in the proposed device are up to an order magnitude higher than those achieved in existing state‐of‐the‐art dehumidifiers. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 1780–1790, 2013  相似文献
