Farnesol prevents the germination of yeast cells into mycelia, a fact that may be useful in eliminating C. albicans pathogenicity. Given the clinical potential of farnesol, its impact on C. albicans and host cells merited further investigation. We thus studied the effect of farnesol on C. albicans growth and filamentation and on gingival epithelial cells and fibroblasts and the synergistic effect of both gingival cells and farnesol on C. albicans filamentation. Repeated additions of farnesol reduced the growth of C. albicans. Farnesol was also effective at reducing C. albicans germ tube formation. While farnesol inhibited germ tube formation under the conditions tested, it was most effective at inhibiting C. albicans filamentation when added to the culture medium at the same time as the serum. Farnesol also had an effect on gingival cells. In a serum-free medium, farnesol reduced fibroblast adhesion and proliferation, promoted epithelial cell differentiation and reduced proliferation up to 48 h post-treatment. These effects were not seen in the presence of serum. When C. albicans, farnesol and gingival cells were present in the same culture, significantly greater inhibition of the yeast-to-hyphal transition was observed than germ tube inhibition in cultures containing only C. albicans and farnesol, suggesting a synergistic effect between the gingival cells and farnesol in inhibiting the transition. Overall, the data suggest that farnesol is effective against C. albicans and may have an effect on host cells at certain concentrations.  相似文献

Different types of starch were phosphorylated to different degrees of substitution using monosodium and disodium hydrogen orthophosphate at 160 °C under vacuum. Generally, phosphation enhanced the physicochemical properties of the modified starches compared to their native counterparts. Solubility and swelling power greatly increase when phosphorylation was carried out to a low degree of substitution, while the solubility and swelling power decreased gradually by increasing the degree of substitution. However, the values of the monoesters were still higher than those of the corresponding native polysaccharides. Viscosities of different starch types except corn amylose showed the highest values at the lowest degree of substitution, when the degree of phosphation increased the viscosity values decreased. Native potato starch formed a clear paste (96% transmittance) due to the presence of phosphate groups while the paste clarity of potato starch decreased gradually by increasing the degree of phosphation. Generally, phosphorylation increased the light transmittance of the other starches investigated at the lowest degree of substitution but the clarity decreased by increasing the degree of substitution.  相似文献

Intermediate host snails of schistosomiasis were surveyed in this study to determine their abundance and distribution in the lake and land aquatic habitats of Lake Victoria basin of Kenya. Several sites were sampled at eight locations, both in the lake and on the land. The habitat and/or vegetation type (i.e. open water, hippo grass, hyacinth, ambatch trees, other vegetation, stream, swamp, pond, dam) of the sampled aquatic sites within the locations were also differentiated, water physicochemical parameters were determined, and the abundance of different species or taxa of phytoplankton and zooplankton were enumerated and correlated with the abundance of schistosomiasis snails in the sites. The results indicated significantly more Biomphalaria sudanica snails than Bulinus africanus snails in different physical habitats on land (Student's t‐test, P < 0.05), as well as in different locations on land (Student's t‐test, P = 0.026). Regression analyses revealed that several physicochemical parameters, including dissolved oxygen (R2 = ?0.659; n = 8; P = 0.014), pH (R2 = 0.728; n = 8; P = 0.007) and turbulence (R2 = ?0.616; n = 8; P = 0.02), were predictive of Biomphalaria spp. abundance, while pH (R= 0.610; n = 8; P = 0.02) and turbulence (R= ?0.578; n = 8; P = 0.028) were predictive of Bulinus spp. abundance in different locations in the lake. Cyanobacteria (R= 0.638; n = 8; P = 0.02) and chlorophyceae (R2 = ?0.50; n = 8; P = 0.05) were shown to be predictive of both Biomphalaria spp. and Bulinus spp. abundance in different locations in the lake. Zooplankton abundance varied significantly between different locations in the lake (One‐way anova , P < 0.001). Bosmina spp. were found to be predictive of both Biomphalaria spp. (R= ?0.627; n = 8; P = 0.01) and Bulinus spp. (R= ?0.50; n = 8; P = 0.05) in different locations in the lake. The results from this study will help inform policy regarding control measures for schistosomias and intermediate snail hosts in Lake Victoria waters, as well as in adjacent terrestrial aquatic habitats and even beyond.  相似文献

Recycling waste building materials from construction and demolition (C&D) sites is increasingly investigated for economical and environmental reasons. Roller compacted concrete (RCC) is a special dry concrete mix; laid down and compacted like a soil, it is especially used for the construction of massive structures like dams or large horizontal surfaces like road foundation. In this paper, natural concrete slabs were cured in water, sea water, chloride solutions or sulphate solutions and then crushed to obtain virgin and contaminated (polluted) recycled aggregates. The aim of this research is the total replacement (100% coarse and fine) of natural aggregates (NA) by recycled concrete aggregates (RA) in the composition of a roller compacted concrete. The natural and recycled aggregates are characterised and compared. The mechanical properties and durability performances of concrete with contaminated RA are analysed. The experimental results showed that the polluted RA are much richer in chlorides than in sulphates and are leached if they are soaked in water. Significant differences were observed between the properties of original and new concrete and the results demonstrated the need of taking these contaminations into account.  相似文献

A field study of the food eaten by solitary desert locusts was carried out in a winter breeding area in Mauritania. The food eaten, determined by the plant epidermis found in fecal pellets, was compared to the plant's availability in the habitat.Schouwia purpurea, well represented in the diets, was dominant at the study site. Adults had a preference forTribulus terrester. Growth and feeding on these two plants were compared. The high water content ofS. purpurea leaves limited the dry matter eaten and slowed down growth. Glucosinolates were separated and quantified by gas chromatography. There are 132mol/g dry matter in green leaves. In multiple choice tests, with paper disks, glucosinolate extracts were phagostimulant at a low concentration (21mol/g dry matter) and repulsive at a higher one (214mol/ g dry matter). Biting behavior onS. purpurea was recorded and analyzed on video. The importance ofSchouwia purpurea in desert locust habitats and its defenses is discussed.  相似文献

Reliable tool wear monitoring technique is one of the important aspects for achieving an integrated and self-adjusting manufacturing system. In this study, an analytical model is proposed to estimate the cutting forces, the tool geometry, and the chip geometry in relation to the flank wear, when milling with a ball-end mill. Modeling is based on thermomechanical modelling of oblique cutting. The worn tool geometry is decomposed into a series of axial elementary cutting edges. At any active tooth element, the flank wear geometry is calculated and the chip formation is obtained from an oblique cutting process characterised by local undeformed chip section and local cutting angles. Coated carbide ball-end tool, and a titanium workpiece material have been considered in this paper. The results found by using developed models have shown good agreement with experimental results.  相似文献

A novel low computational complexity robust adaptive blind multiuser detector, based on the minimum output energy (MOE) detector with multiple constraints and a quadratic inequality (QI) constraint is developed in this paper. Quadratic constraint has been a widespread approach to improve robustness against mismatch errors, uncertainties in estimating the data covariance matrix, and random perturbations in detector parameters. A diagonal loading technique is compulsory to achieve the quadratic constraint where the diagonal loading level is adjusted to satisfy the constrained value. Integrating the quadratic constraint into recursive algorithms seems to be a moot point since there is no closed‐form solution for the diagonal loading term. In this paper, the MOE detector of DS/CDMA system is implemented using a fast recursive steepest descent adaptive algorithm anchored in the generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) structure with multiple constraints and a QI constraint on the adaptive portion of the GSC structure. The Lagrange multiplier method is exploited to solve the QI constraint. An optimal variable loading technique, which is capable of providing robustness against uncertainties and mismatch errors with low computational complexity is adopted. Simulations for several mismatch and random perturbations scenarios are conducted in a rich multipath environment with near–far effect to explore the robustness of the proposed detector. Date (Pheonix dactylifera L.) seeds are a valuable and abundant by‐product with various potential food applications. Free polyphenols (FPPs) and bound polyphenols (BPPs) of date seeds from Deglet Nour variety grown in Australia were investigated using high‐performance liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry. The FPP fraction contained the following main phenolic compounds per gram of date seed powder; procyanidin B1 (499.8 ± 7.8 μg), procyanidin B2 (288.6 ± 6.1 μg), catechin (167.6 ± 2.1 μg), epicatechin (39.44 ± 0.39 μg), and protocatechuic acid (1.77 ± 0.22 μg). Additionally, one of the 2 A‐type dimers was confirmed as procyanidin A2 (24.05 ± 0.12 μg/g). A‐type dimers have not been reported before in date seeds. The BPP fraction contained epicatechin (52.59 ± 0.76 μg/g) and procyanidin B2 (294.2 ± 3.7 μg/g), while several peaks exhibiting ESI? m/z of 153 indicated dihydroxybenzoic acid isomers including protocatechuic acid (2.138 ± 0.025 μg/g). These findings contributed to our knowledge of date seed phytochemicals and understanding of their contribution to the reported bioactivities.  相似文献

A novel objective yarn bulk measurement method has been developed through image analysis technique. Two orthogonal images are taken from the same part of a yarn and then transformed into gray scale. Each gray scale image is further processed separately by extracting the yarn image from background with the help of intensity histogram using adaptive threshold. This gives rise to a binary image which is used as input for the second part of the algorithm measuring yarn volume. The processing on the input image starts with omitting the long rare loops, considered as noise, by morphological operations. This is followed by measuring the width of the two orthogonal images pixel by pixel along the yarn. Finally, the total volume of the yarn is ascertained by integrating the volume of all the individual imaginary ovals with their two diameters replaced by the two widths of orthogonal images at the corresponding pixel.  相似文献
