Data are presented on the externally received personal dose equivalent for radiation workers who used the Korea Radioisotope Association's personal monitoring and dose record keeping service since 1984, and provide initial statistics on Korean workers who have been exposed to ionising radiation in different occupations. The total number of workers registered during the period of 1984 to 1999 was 64,518. The number increased steadily and the accumulated dose also increased. The proportion of radiation workers by occupation was 38.4% for nuclear power plants, 20.3% for industrial organisations and 12.4% for non-destructive industry. The annual collective dose of radiation workers was 31.72 man.Sv in 1999. The mean annual dose by sex was 1.49 mSv for males and 0.56 mSv for females and the mean annual dose for a worker was 1.41 mSv with the highest mean dose being received by non-destructive industry (3.53 mSv). Very few workers (0.8%) received more than 20 mSv (2 rem) and only one more than 50 mSv, the legal limit for an annual dose increase. There has been a steady decline in the mean dose since 1984, showing a significant decrease in dose with time (p<0.001). In the past two decades, it has become increasingly clear that genetic factors contribute to the aetiology of many common diseases including cancers, coronary disease, allergy and psychiatric disorders. While one goal of genetic epidemiological studies is to locate susceptibility genes for these complex diseases, it is important that strong evidence of familial aggregation be established at an early stage of research. In this paper, we discuss several study designs useful to address some issues such as (1) detecting familial aggregation, (2) testing for gene-environment interaction, (3) identifying homogeneous subgroups and (4) measuring magnitude and patterns of familial correlations. These designs include the conventional case-control design and the family case-control design. For each of these two study designs, we discuss analytical strategies as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Sedimentary records of sewage pollution using faecal markers in contrasting peri-urban shallow lakes

Sewage contamination in shallow lake sediments is of concern because the pathogens, organic matter and nutrients contribute to the deterioration of the water-bodies' health and ecology. Sediment cores from three shallow lakes (Coneries, Church and Clifton Ponds) within Attenborough nature reserve located downstream of sewage treatment works were analysed for TOC, C/N, δ13C, δ15N, bacterial coliforms and faecal sterols. 210Pb and 137Cs activities were used to date the sediments. Elemental analysis suggests that the source of organic matter was algal and down profile changes in δ13C indicate a possible decrease in productivity with time which could be due to improvements in sewage treatment. δ15N for Coneries Pond are slightly higher than those observed in Church or Clifton and are consistent with a sewage-derived nitrate source which has been diluted by non-sewage sources of N. The similarity in δ15N values (+ 12‰ to + 10‰) indicates that the three ponds were not entirely hydrologically isolated. Analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) reveals that Coneries Pond had sterol concentrations in the range 20 to 30 μg/g (dry wt.), whereas, those from Clifton and Church Ponds were lower. The highest concentrations of the human-sourced sewage marker 5β-coprostanol were observed in the top 40 cm of Coneries Pond with values up to 2.2 μg/g. In contrast, Church and Clifton Pond sediments contain only trace amounts throughout. Down-profile comparison of 5β-coprostanol/cholesterol, 5β-coprostanol/(5β-coprostanol + 5α-cholestanol) and 5β-epicoprostanol/coprostanol as well as 5α-cholestanol/cholesterol suggests that Coneries Pond has received appreciable amounts of faecal contamination. Examination of 5β-stigmastanol (marker for herbivorous/ruminant animals) down core concentrations suggests a recent decrease in manure slurry input to Coneries Pond. The greater concentration of β-sitosterol in sediments from Church and Clifton Ponds as compared to Coneries is attributed in part to their greater diversity and extent of aquatic plants and avian faeces. 相似文献

The objective was to assess food consumption among children attending non-profit nurseries in the Federal District, Brazil.A representative sample was obtained and stratified by income. Food intake among 678 children, between 4 and 82 months old, was analyzed in nine nurseries using the 24-h dietary recall and direct food weighing methods. In children under 13 months old mean intake was above AI between 93.6 to 100% for carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins B1, B2, B12, B6, and zinc. In children from 7-12 months 56.5% presented iron consumption below EAR. Calcium intake was above AI for 35.4% of children over 1 year old. For vitamins with EAR values, the prevalence of inadequate consumption was 53.2% for vitamin E, and 90% for folate for children over 12 months old. Iron and zinc intake was above UL for 6.4% and 32.5% of children under 1 year old, and 1.5% and 5.3% for the remaining children, respectively. Lipid percentage distribution range among children between 13 and 47 months old was within the acceptable range for only 16.2%. Nonetheless, children between 36 and 82 months of both genders presented mean intake below energy requirements. Inadequate consumption observed for some nutrients points to the need for improvements in the standard of meals and nutritional assistance offered to children enrolled in charitably run nurseries in the Federal District. 相似文献

Chitin is an abundant biopolymer composed of units of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine linked by β-1,4 glycosidic bonds. Chitin is the main component of the shells of mollusks, the cell wall of fungi and yeast and of the exoskeleton of crustaceans and insects. The degradation of chitin is catalyzed by chitinases that occur in a wide range of organisms. Among them, the chitinases from microorganisms are extremely important for the degradation and recycling of the carbon and nitrogen trapped in the large amount of insoluble chitin in nature. Streptomyces sp. TH-11 was isolated from the sediment of the Tou-Chien River, Taiwan. The chitinolytic enzyme activities were detected using a rapid in-gel detection method from the cell-free preparation of the culture medium of TH-11. The chitinolytic enzyme activity during prolonged liquid culturing was also analyzed by direct measurement of the chitin consumption. Although the sunlight-mediated inactivation of viruses has been recognized as an important process that controls surface water quality, the mechanisms of virus inactivation by sunlight are not yet clearly understood. We investigated the synergistic role of temperature and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM), an exogenous sensitizer, for sunlight-mediated inactivation of porcine rotavirus and MS2 bacteriophage. Upon irradiation by a full spectrum of simulated sunlight in the absence of SRNOM and in the temperature range of 14-42 °C, high inactivation rate constants, k(obs), of MS2 (k(obs) ≤ 3.8 h(-1) or 1-log(10) over 0.6 h) and rotavirus (k(obs) ≤ 11.8 h(-1) or ~1-log(10) over 0.2 h) were measured. A weak temperature (14-42 °C) dependence of k(obs) values was observed for both viruses irradiated by the full sunlight spectrum. Under the same irradiation condition, the presence of SRNOM reduced the inactivation of both viruses due to attenuation of lower wavelengths of the simulated sunlight. For rotavirus and MS2 solutions irradiated by only UVA and visible light in the absence of SRNOM, inactivation kinetics were slow (k(obs) < 0.3 h(-1) or <1-log(10) unit reduction over 7 h) and temperature-independent for the range considered. Conversely, under UVA and visible light irradiation and in the presence of SRNOM, temperature-dependent inactivation of MS2 was observed. For rotavirus, the SRNOM-mediated exogenous inactivation was only important at temperatures >33 °C, with low rotavirus k(obs) values (k(obs) ≈ 0.2 h(-1); 1-log(10) unit reduction over 12 h) for the temperature range of 14-33 °C. These k(obs) values increased to 0.5 h(-1) at 43 °C and 1.5 h(-1) (1-log(10) reduction over 1.6 h) at 50 °C. While SRNOM-mediated exogenous inactivation of MS2 was triggered by singlet oxygen, the presence of hydrogen peroxide was important for rotavirus inactivation in the 40-50 °C range. 相似文献

The natural steroids estradiol-17beta (E2) and estrone (E1) and the synthetic steroid ethynylestradiol-17alpha (EE2) have frequently been measured in waters receiving domestic effluents. All of these steroids bind to the estrogen receptor(s) and have been shown to elicit a range of estrogenic responses in fish at environmentally relevant concentrations. At present, however, no relative potency estimates have been derived for either the individual steroidal estrogens or their mixtures in vivo. In this study the estrogenic activity of E2, E1, and EE2, and the combination effects of a mixture of E2 and EE2 (equi-potent fixed-ratio mixture), were assessed using vitellogenin induction in a 14-day in vivo juvenile rainbow trout screening assay. Median effective concentrations, relative to E2, for induction of vitellogenin were determined from the concentration-response curves and the relative estrogenic potencies of each of the test chemicals calculated. Median effective concentrations were between 19 and 26 ng L(-1) for E2, 60 ng L(-1) for E1, and between 0.95 and 1.8 ng L(-1) for EE2, implying that EE2 was approximately 11 to 27 times more potent than E2, while E2 was 2.3 to 3.2 times more potent than E1. The median effective concentration, relative to E2, for the binary mixture of E2 and EE2 was 15 ng L(-1) (comprising 14.4 ng L(-1) E2 and 0.6 ng L(-1) EE2). Using the model of concentration addition it was shown that this activity of the binary mixture could be predicted from the activity of the individual chemicals. The ability of each individual steroid to contribute to the overall effect of a mixture, even at individual no-effect concentrations, combined with the high estrogenic potency of the steroids, particularly the synthetic steroid EE2, emphasizes the need to consider the total estrogenic load of these chemicals in our waterways. 相似文献
