Variation of the creep limit and structure of a welded joint in PT-3V titanium alloy under the effect of cyclic loading. Report 2

Comparative analysis of the characteristics of amplitude-dependent internal friction (IF) was carried out to explain reasons leading to an increase of the creep limit of the butt welded joint in PT-3V titanium alloy (PT-2V filler material) after cyclic loading. IF was measured by the method of the direct torsional pendulum on cylindrical specimens representing the gage part of the specimens subjected to preliminary cyclic loading. The data were processed using the Granato-Lucke theory. The results show that the reduction of IF after cyclic loading took place as a result of an increase of the number and redistribution of pinning points of the dislocations. Consequently, the density of mobile dislocations decreases by 8% and the length of dislocation segments by 18%. These processes of stabilization of the structure were completed within 5·10 ⁴ cycles of preliminary loading. Stabilization of the dislocation structure of the material of the welded joint increases its creep limit.Translated from Problemy Prochnosti, No. 4, pp. 35–40, April, 1996.     

Investigations of delamination criticality and the transferability of growth criteria

This article describes a study of delamination growth along 0 °/0 °, 0 °/ 5 °, ± 5 °, and 0 °/90 ° interfaces sandwiched between unidirectional carbon fibre/epoxy composite material. Relationships between damage criticality, growth rate and acoustic emission activity for delamination growth have been studied and the transferability of results from laboratory coupons to composite structural elements has been examined. Two types of coupon tests, conventional delamination beams and rigidly loaded single edge notched strips, have been compared for different mode ratios. Comparative tests have been made on buckling-induced delamination in plates. A graphite crack gauge has been used to measure delamination length and growth rate, ranging from 0.05–2000 m/s. Damage growth was also followed using visual, ultrasonic C-scan, X-ray radiography, macro-video and acoustic emission measurements. Empirical evaluations of interlaminar toughness for delamination beams are made using the Irwin-Kies relation. Unstable growth is analysed using elasto-dynamic moving finite elements. Bucklinginduced delamination is analysed using plate/shell FE methods with growth/remeshing algorithms.     

Increasing the interference immunity of broadband systems for measuring and transmitting information by utilizing nonlinear signal processing methods

A method is considered for increasing the immunity from interference of broadband systems for measuring and transmitting information. It is based on utilizing nonlinear methods to process spread-spectrum signals. The possibility is investigated of using a quasioptimal receiving device which can be implemented in practice. It is shown that the proposed method makes it possible to solve the rejection problem at the physical level. Translated from Izmeritel'naya Tekhnika, No. 11, pp. 13–15, November, 1996.     

A behavioral approach to linear exact modeling

The behavioral approach to system theory provides a parameter-free framework for the study of the general problem of linear exact modeling and recursive modeling. The authors present the solution of the (continuous-time) polynomial-exponential time series modeling problem. Both recursive and nonrecursive solutions are provided and classified according to properties like complexity and controllability. It is shown, in particular, that recursive modeling corresponds to updating by means of a cascade inter-connection of systems. As a special case, the solution of several other problems, such as rational interpolation, realization, and modeling of arbitrary discrete-time time series, is obtained     

New ceramer high optical abrasion resistant transparent coating materials based on functionalized melamine and a tris(m-aminophenyl)phosphine oxide compound

Summary The synthesis of new high optical abrasion resistance coating materials has been undertaken by functionalizing melamine and tris(m-aminophenyl)phosphine oxide with a triethoxysilane containing reagent. These highly functionalized compounds have been used for coating a bis-phenol-A polycarbonate substrate by the sol-gel method. Preliminary data shows the abrasion resistance of the polymer substrate is considerably improved when it is coated by these optically clear materials.     

Afterburner [network-independent card for protocols]

Many current implementations of protocols such as the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) are inefficient because data are often accessed more frequently than necessary. Three techniques that reduce the need for memory bandwidth are proposed. The techniques are copy-on-write, page remapping, and single-copy. Afterburner, a network-independent card that provides the services that are necessary for a single-copy protocol stack, is described. The card has 1 MByte of local buffers and provides a simple interface to a variety of network link adapters, including HIPPI and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM). Afterburner can support transfers to and from the link adapter card at rates up to 1 Gbit/s. An implementation of TCP/IP that uses the features provided by Afterburner to reduce the movement of data to a single copy is discussed. Measurements of the end-to-end performance of Afterburner and the single-copy implementation of TCP/IP are presented     

Dietary α-Tocopheryl Acetate Enhances Beef Quality in Holstein and Beef Breed Steers

The effect of long-term feeding (252 days) of three supplemental levels of α-tocopheryl acetate (actual 0, 360 and 1290 IU/head/day) on meat quality was evaluated in Holstein and beef breed steers. Tissue vitamin E concentrations were increased by each increment of supplementation. The color display life of fresh beef under simulated retail conditions was extended 2 to 5 days by vitamin E and lipid oxidation was markedly reduced. Microbial population was not affected by level of supplementation. No deterioration in sensory quality occurred for steaks from supplemented steers that were displayed until the time steaks from unsupplemented steers discolored.     

Cloning and characterization of the Inc A/C plasmid RA1 replicon

The Inc A/C plasmids, like Inc P and Inc Q plasmids, have a broad host range. However, their maintenance functions remain to be studied. An autoreplicative region of 2.79 kb named RepA/C, able to replicate both in the family Enterobacteriaceae and in Pseudomonas spp., was isolated and sequenced. The stability, copy number, and incompatibility expression of this replicon were determined. RepA/C and a nonautoreplicative fragment of 16 kb of this replicon were used as probes and showed specific hybridizations with the Inc P3-A/C plasmids from Pseudomonas spp. and members of the Enterobacteriaceae. These probes could be used as tools for identification of the plasmids of this epidemiologically important Inc group.
